Optimizing Foamed Bitumen Bound Asphalt Mixture Design Using Neural Network

Publication Name: Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering

Publication Date: 2024-09-20

Volume: 68

Issue: 4

Page Range: 1040-1051

Description:

Effective design of bituminous mixes for road pavements requires a robust understanding of their mechanical properties to ensure durability and safety. Conventional experimental methods for assessing these properties are time-consuming and costly. To address this challenge, advanced machine learning techniques have gained prominence in predicting bituminous mix behaviour. In this study, we focus on predicting Marshall Stability (MS) and Flow (MF) of foamed bitumen bound asphalt pavements using essential input parameters: Temperature, Foam Content, Expansion Ratio, and Half-Life. Leveraging a neural network model, accurate prediction equations and surface analyses were developed for optimizing pavement design. Furthermore, integration equations are also introduced to enhance the accuracy of the methodology. Sensitivity and Parametric Analyses provide insights into parameter impacts, and R-squared measures model goodness of fit. The research work presented not only streamlines pavement design but also advances the understanding of intricate input-output relationships in bituminous mixtures.

The Impact of the Difficult Economic Situation on the Operation of Slovak Companies in the Shadow of War

Publication Name: Journal of Ecohumanism

Publication Date: 2024-09-20

Volume: 3

Issue: 7

Page Range: 2213-2230

Description:

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the organizational and human resource (HR) responses to the challenging economic conditions caused by the war and the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the limited evidence available on how organizations adapt to such crises, this research aims to develop a conceptual model and empirically investigate the influence of two specific factors: organizational size and direct economic ties with the Russian and Ukrainian markets. This study employs a mixed-method approach, combining both theoretical and empirical research. A conceptual model was first developed to outline potential organizational reactions to crisis conditions. The empirical part of the study involved data collection from 128 organizations, including companies and institutions, in Slovakia. The analysis was conducted to test two hypotheses regarding how organizational size and economic connections with the Russian and Ukrainian markets affect organizational and HR responses in times of war.The findings of the study indicate that neither organizational size nor direct economic linkages with the Russian and Ukrainian markets significantly influenced the responses of the organizations studied to the economic difficulties caused by the war. This suggests that other factors may play a more critical role in shaping organizational and HR strategies in response to crises. For theory, this study contributes to the existing literature by challenging the assumption that organizational size and direct economic ties to conflict-affected markets are primary determinants of organizational responses to crisis. For practice, the findings suggest that managers and HR professionals need to consider a broader range of factors beyond size and market exposure when developing strategies to cope with economic disruptions caused by global crises. This research is original in its focus on the specific impacts of war and pandemic-induced economic conditions on organizations in Slovakia. The study provides valuable insights into how organizations navigate crises, expanding the understanding of crisis management and organizational adaptability. It adds value by highlighting the need for more comprehensive models that consider a wider array of factors influencing organizational behavior in times of global economic disruption.

Understanding the Employment Expectations of Young Professionals: A Study by Education Level

Publication Name: Journal of Ecohumanism

Publication Date: 2024-09-20

Volume: 3

Issue: 7

Page Range: 564-577

Description:

Young employees have to make many trade-offs in their job search and are often confronted with a need for more skills and abilities. In our survey, we investigated the expectations of young employees towards employers about their level of education and the factors that influence/inhibit their job placement. The results confirmed that remuneration, motivation, an inspiring work environment, and career opportunities offered by employers play a significant role in job choice. The young employees' responses showed that they feel underprepared for the challenges of the labor market and see the solution to this problem in increasing the number of practical training hours. The study highlights the differences in the expectations of students at different levels of education and could be a starting point for further research.

The Natural Pattern-based Fuzzy Investment System

Publication Name: Journal of Ecohumanism

Publication Date: 2024-09-20

Volume: 3

Issue: 7

Page Range: 2003-2018

Description:

The underlying research problem concerns simplifying nature’s infinite sustaina-bility pattern into a usable system to prove self-care in the financial field. Many disciplines have discovered self-sustaining systems, implying one should also exist in the portfolio-or asset management field. This paper models and applies a self-sustaining invest-ment system based on nature’s sustainability pattern to present a usable and easi-ly adaptable financial self-care model that can contribute to societal and individ-ual well-being.This interdisciplinary research incorporates fractal patterns from na-ture and integrates these into an innovative investment decision system via a working and utilizable model. The article approaches the problem in three ways. First, it applies an unprecedented, proprietary fuzzy heuristic approach to parse the Mandelbrot set hiding nature’s growth code. Second, it subjects the resulting model system to static, dynamic, and iterative methods. Finally, it tests the above in practice in a focus group research project based on individual decisions in a portfolio collision. The paper brings manageable order to investment deci-sion processes using a specific econophysics approach to provide a complex whole of frames, alternatives, and dynamic wealth management functions. The paper attempts to demonstrate the self-sustaining power of the natural order in investment portfolio returns, behavioral finance, and wealth management deci-sions. The theory of an efficient, well-functioning, self-sustaining investment decision system based on heuristic criteria is developable and has been proven. The study made the organizational dominance measurable and – through fuzzy logic – simplified the complexity of the Mandelbrot set. The research also shows the scalability of the fuzzy symmetry framework, implying that it is transferable to other disciplines.

Robot-assisted radi cal prostatectomy

Publication Name: Magyar Onkologia

Publication Date: 2024-09-19

Volume: 68

Issue: 3

Page Range: 255-261

Description:

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonly seen malignancies. Radical prostatectomy-open, laparoscopic or robot-assisted – is considered the first-line treatment for intermediate and high-risk prostate cancer, along with radiotherapy, if the expected survival is greater than 10 years. Radical prostatectomy is also considered in case of low-risk patients alongside active follow-up. Today, robot-assisted radical prostatectomy is the most common surgical treatment for localised prostate cancer. It is associated with shorter hospitalisation times and lower transfusion requirements compared to open surgery. Satisfactory long-term biochemical recurrence-free survival and tumour-specific survival can be achieved with robot-assisted radical prostatectomy in the treatment of low-, intermediate-and highrisk prostate cancer. It has the advantage of rapid postoperative continence recovery and high potency recovery rates. The cost of the minimal invasive approach is higher compared to open radical prostatectomy, and the benefits of faster postoperative recovery should be further investigated to quantify cost-effectiveness. The robot-assisted approach has enabled a number of new surgical techniques and further rapid advances in this field are expected.

The protection of nuclear installations in time of armed conflict-Old rules, new challenges

Publication Name: Hungarian Journal of Legal Studies

Publication Date: 2024-09-18

Volume: 64

Issue: 4

Page Range: 508-519

Description:

In 2022, for the first time in some while, the public around the world was confronted with an armed conflict between states, which directly involved a nuclear facility, specifically a nuclear power plant in operation. Unfortunately, the situation following Russia's armed attack on Ukraine on 24 February 2022 and the acts of war around the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant once again draw attention to the need to protect nuclear facilities during armed conflicts. Therefore, this paper reviews the relevant rules of public international law and scrutinizes the norms that have been established through international legislation and soft law mechanisms to protect and guarantee the nuclear safety and security of nuclear installations.

The war in Ukraine in light of international law

Publication Name: Hungarian Journal of Legal Studies

Publication Date: 2024-09-18

Volume: 64

Issue: 4

Page Range: 568-579

Description:

The aggression and the 'special military operation' against Ukraine by the Russian Federation have, since their outset, implied not only the violation of fundamental customary and treaty norms of international law, but, at the same time also undermine the foundations of the contemporary international legal order. The 'special military operation' violates several universal international conventions in the elaboration of which the predecessor state of contemporary Russia, the Soviet Union had a definitive role; furthermore, it expressly breaches Russian undertakings concerning respect for the independence and sovereignty of Ukraine. Since in this case the aggressor state is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, thus, instead of the Council, the emergency special session of the UN General Assembly proceeds on the basis of the Uniting for Peace resolution and makes recommendations for collective measures to the Member States. The present study discusses the most important international norms breached with the aggression and during the war, the resolutions of the emergency special sessions of the UN General Assembly, the post-war situation, as well as the issue of remedy and reparation due to Ukraine.

Corporate Social Responsibility in the EU Regulation: With Special Focus on the SMEs

Publication Name: Civil Szemle

Publication Date: 2024-09-18

Volume: 21

Issue: 4

Page Range: 111-131

Description:

The paper aims to introduce the milestones in the EU regulation on corporate social responsibility (CSR) in general with a special focus on small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). EU regulation is introduced based on EU documents and international and Hungarian literature. The debate about CSR began in the 1990s in Europe and after the turn of the millennium several papers, guidelines, and directives attempt to provide a common approach about it. However, CSR relates mainly to big companies still today, smaller firms can also implement CSR. Despite that research on SMEs’ CSR started after 2000, EU documents already highlighted from the beginning of the 2000s the importance of smaller companies as well, and in 2002 the European Commission drew up a strategy for SMEs. The paper illustrates not only the papers and SMEs’ role but also provides ideas about the sense of the EU regulation on CSR and collects the reasons why could it be beneficial to have a debate and approach about CSR at the EU level. The paper also presents some information about how the SMEs’ CSR features comply with interview research among SMEs in Győr, Hungary in 2021–2022. It is possible to believe that learning the European approach may contribute to thinking in a more integrated way about how to behave socially responsibly and how to manage social impact.
