Mapping IT and Management Challenges in Small and Micro-Businesses: A Path to Digital Maturity in Manufacturing †

Publication Name: Engineering Proceedings

Publication Date: 2024-01-01

Volume: 79

Issue: 1

Page Range: Unknown

Description:

Small and micro-businesses often struggle with poor data accuracy due to a lack of dedicated labor force for non-core business functions. The required efforts and costs associated with improving data accuracy, such as setting up and operating an adequate inventory management system, are unpredictable for these businesses. Despite the data-intensive nature of operating specialized software like MES and WMS, the decision to invest in excessive data manipulation can be challenging for micro-entities, even with the potential benefits. This study aims to empirically determine the challenges, risks, and other non-financial decision factors micro-enterprises face when establishing effective data management and utilization practices. A data model was developed based on interviews with 17 small business manufacturers and service companies to support the essential data entry requirements of micro-businesses. The findings support the concept of a SAAS (Software as a Service) product tailored to the needs of these businesses. Furthermore, this research highlights the under-researched areas of logistics processes and data management in small businesses.

Analysis of the application of different production and material flow mechanisms on construction sites

Publication Name: Proceedings 2014 International Conference on Computational Science and Computational Intelligence Csci 2014

Publication Date: 2014-01-01

Volume: 1

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 241-246

Description:

This paper presents an analysis of the application of material flow control mechanisms at construction sites. Such control mechanisms are widely used in assembly plants to ensure the correct quantity of materials at the correct destination, to maximize the WIP and for various other essential purposes. However the advantages of material flow control mechanisms can be questionable among certain circumstances. I determined the key parameters which influence the success of a certain control mechanism - like kanban - at a construction site. I have built up a general case in which a given control mechanism is applicable. The tool of this analysis was a logistic simulation software. © 2014 IEEE.

Optimization of strategic level performance measurement and decision making using artificial neural network

Publication Name: 2012 IEEE International Technology Management Conference Itmc 2012

Publication Date: 2012-11-01

Volume: Unknown

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 93-97

Description:

In our paper we propose a new method for the strategic level performance measurement and decision making by presenting two case studies performed in 2011. We proposed a computational intelligence method to establish connection between basic operational level data and important strategic level indicators. In the first case study this indicator is related to performance measurement. In the second case study the indicator is the contribution margin of the given company. After the introduction we present the process of programming and learning with actual company data. Finally an evaluation of the results is presented based on the program runs. © 2012 IEEE.

Trade-offs in production supply systems

Publication Name: International Conference on Industrial Logistics Icil 2012 Conference Proceedings

Publication Date: 2012-01-01

Volume: Unknown

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 356-361

Description:

The cost price of a final product depends on - among others - the cost of value added processes such as production supply. When planning the supply strategy and defining the parameters of the processes we face a lot of trade-off situations (e.g.: decision between kanban or other supply strategy, kanban quantity, production line loading cycle time, maximal number of picking items on picking lists, etc.). The aim of this paper is to list these decision situations and give adequate solutions on them. By means of mathematical modeling we define the optimal system parameter configuration of a production supply system where the total cost is minimal.
