Enhanced Floating Plastic Waste Detecting on Offsets of River Tisza, Hungary

The topic was to spot and potentially measure the amount of floating waste on the river Tisza and its offsets. It was a two-year long study in which a complete system was designed and built and performed measurements 50-70 % of waste dumped into rivers are plastics. Ranging from micro-plastics (< 0.1 μm) to macro-plastics (>5 cm). The nature of the plastic pollution depends greatly on the source of the pollution. In the river Tisza and its offsets, the pollution is mainly coming from landfills located near the upstream. In the first phase, an experimental motion-detection camera system was developed to try out multiple configurations during the research. The open-source motion software has been implemented, running on Raspberry Pi 3 as data collectors. The system uploaded data into a data server running in the cloud (Azure). The camera system was operating for more than a year and collected over 440,000 pictures. At the end of this phase, the conclusion was that individual plastic objects are not recognisable, only bigger groups of them. On top of this, we have seen that the optical noise is very high, rendering many of the pictures unfit for analysis, but the results still served as a very good starting point for the collection of AI training data. During the second phase, software was experimented. YOLOv3 and Faster R-CNN have been applied, eventually settling for Faster R-CNN with a ResNet-50-FPN base network.

Disruptive Proposal to Fill One Gap in Waste Collection in Hungary Regarding Plastic Recycling

Plastic waste is one of the biggest problems facing our planet. From mountains to oceans, it pollutes our environment, can affect human health, and destroy ecosystems. While global plastic production was 1.5 Mt in 1950, by 2021, it will have risen to 390 Mt. Plastic products have an average lifespan of 10 y but can take up to 500 y to degrade. Not all people can be persuaded to do an activity immediately, even if the activity is genuinely beneficial or useful to society. An example is the case of plastic waste that the public can collect in the plastic waste recovery process. This is a critical point in the process, which needs to be taken in several directions to facilitate. The aim of this research is to develop a disruptive proposal for an innovative solution for the mandatory packaging return in Hungary with domestically developed recycle vending machines. This study outlines several possible solutions, such as multifunctional recycle vending machines, their placement at strategic locations, the use of innovative technologies, and the implementation of environmentally friendly operations at the design stage. The proposals set out the user requirements for the whole system and the steps needed to implement it in society.

This paper builds on an earlier work that aims to generate code for connected digital systems (IoT, Internet of Things). Orcc-IoT was the adaptation of the Orcc dataflow design environment and code generator to the IoT problem area. IoT systems are characterized by heterogeneity of both the software and hardware environments therefore code generators targeting them must be able to handle embedded, client and server enviroments too. The first version of Orcc-IoT provided simplistic code generators. The extensions presented in this paper add embedded and server-side modules and more specialized wireless communication options to test Orcc-IoT's modular architecture.

Cost-efficient localisation system for agricultural use cases

Connected agricultural applications often depend on exact localisation solutions. Often the term “precision agriculture” implies a technology that identifies the location of the livestock, crop, field of agricultural machinery with more or less of precision. While precision requirements vary, the localisation often has to be quite precise like sub-meter or even decimeter precision. Dual-band GPS solutions are able to satisfy these high-precision requirements but these equipments are quite costly and their purchase is often regulated. This paper presents two agricultural use cases and the combination of low-cost GPS and short-range localisation systems that are able to satisfy high-precision requirements for fraction of the costs of dual-band GPS.

Camera sensors have been deployed in the agriculture for various use cases. Most of the applications tried to infer the health and development of the plants based on image data in different wavelength domains. In this paper, we present our research of rodent population estimation with infrared camera sensors. The usual camera sensor applications in the agricultural domain are quite simple from the sensor architecture point of view as the environment rarely changes. Image capture/transmission at preconfigured moments is usually enough. Rodents move quickly so the sensor must be able to capture images with low capture time interval. As the data link to the server backend is relatively slow, this fast capture rate may require image processing capability in the sensor. The paper analyzes the effects of such an image processing capability, in particular the power consumption trade-offs. Inadequate power management support of the selected embedded Linux platforms is identified as a problem and proposals are made for improvement.

The number of large sensor systems are rapidly growing nowadays in many fields. Well-designed Big Data solutions are able to manage the enormous data flow and create real business benefits. One dynamically growing application area is precision farming. It requires robust and energy-efficient sensors, because the devices are placed outdoors, often in harsh conditions, and there is no power outlet in the middle of a corn field. Power efficiency is one of the major themes of the Internet of Things (IoT). According to the IoT vision, embedded sensors send their data to processing units (either located near to the sensor or on some intermediate gateway device or in the cloud) using heterogeneous transport networks. Some sensors employ short-range network like Bluetooth and some gateway device like a tablet. Other sensors directly connect to wide-area networks like cellular networks. This paper will analyse different communication patterns accomplished over GSM network from the viewpoint of the energy consumption of the sensor device with the assumption that the sensor is stationary. The measurements were done using two different GSM modems designed for embedded systems to ensure that the results represent a wider picture and not some implementation property of a particular GSM modem. Recommendations are given about the strategies applications should follow in order to minimize the energy consumption of their GSM subsystems.

Sustainability of Large AI Models: Balancing Environmental and Social Impact with Technology and Regulations

Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, particularly large language models, have shown remarkable advancements, revolutionising various fields across industries. However, the sustainability of building large AI models with billions of parameters has become a subject of concern due to their significant environmental and social impact. The training of such models consumes enormous amounts of water and energy and emits substantial carbon emissions, contributing to climate change as data centres heavily rely on fossil fuels. This article summarises the current situation and explores the benefits and challenges of large AI models, emphasising the environmental impact and proposing strategies towards sustainability. Special attention is given to the social challenges, including accessibility, job displacement, biases, and data privacy concerns. Finally, the article advocates for the formulation of green and good AI practices standards for the future. To achieve sustainability, regulations are suggested to ensure transparency and accountability while promoting innovation-friendly frameworks. The authors see that while there is more progress in technology and infrastructure to address environmental impacts, social impacts are more neglected, and they are arguing for more detailed regulation as a solution.
