Dimensions of traumatized social consciousness Data for the theory of wounded collective identity

Publication Name: Szociologiai Szemle

Publication Date: 2022-01-01

Volume: 32

Issue: 2

Page Range: 57-77

Description:

In our study, we present the results of testing the regional interpretation model of wounded collective identity for East-Central Europe developed by András Máté-Tóth. First, we summarize the essence of the theory and identify the elements along which the theory can be tested, focusing mainly on the emotional aspects. In the second step, we analyze our model on the basis of empirical data retrieved by TÁRKI in 2020. Our results show that the elements of the wounded collective identity are significantly correlated with each other, thus validating the theoretical hypothesis.

Comparison between European protestant and catholic economic development through modern painting

Publication Name: Deturope

Publication Date: 2018-01-01

Volume: 10

Issue: 1

Page Range: 82-96

Description:

Since Max Weber, economists suggest that religious activity affects the European economic development, and this hypothesis was proven between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. Accordingly Protestant economic thinking accelerated the evolving system of capitalism, giving adequate attitudes to the accumulation of wealth. This research supposes that the mentioned capitalist approaches have their own impressions on visual arts, particularly on modern painting. It examines almost nine hundred religious paintings from the fifteenth to nineteenth centuries, investigating signs of business activities on the artworks. This form of qualitative examination apply the methodology of content analysis. As a result of the study the former hypothesis of Weber could be verified from multidisciplinary approach.

Wounded Collective Identity in Europe: Trauma, Religiosity, Modernization and Visions of the Future Based on Empirical Studies of Thirty-Eight European Countries

Publication Name: Religion and Society in Central and Eastern Europe

Publication Date: 2025-12-30

Volume: 18

Issue: 1

Page Range: 3-23

Description:

Máté-Tóth (2015, 2022) uses the concept of woundedness and the theory of wounded collective identity to describe the collective self-understanding of the Central and Eastern European region. An international study by the Századvég Foundation in 2022, based on 38,000 respondents (1,000 per country), provided an opportunity to test the theory on a European sample. This study sought to answer the question of the prevalence of a wounded collective identity in Hungary and other European countries, and whether the theory has any region-specific relevance. The results show that regional in-betweenness can be considered to be a determining factor for wounded collective identity.
