Opportunities of VR for Teaching History

Publication Name: Acta Polytechnica Hungarica

Publication Date: 2024-01-01

Volume: 21

Issue: 3

Page Range: 143-162

Description:

The present study examines the opportunities of VR in the context of humanities and arts and – within their frameworks – in that, of history. Its novelty clearly lies in the fact that in this fields’ cyberspace is not used either by public or by higher education. The inclusion of info-communication tools for history teaching, does not really follow the current trajectory of development. Educators usually work according to methods that have become the most common and familiar. This research clearly revealed that students, who regularly use the VR space, in a History course of teacher training, consider it experiential, user-friendly, simple, problem-oriented and thus, easier to visualize historical facts. The regular and widespread use of VR software could greatly and easily help to progress the historical curriculum space.

Old railways, new borders. The impact of treaty of Trianon on Western Transdanubia network (1918–1924)

Publication Name: Journal of Transport History

Publication Date: 2023-12-01

Volume: 44

Issue: 3

Page Range: 457-482

Description:

The Great War and Trianon opened a new chapter in the history, not only of the Kingdom of Hungary, but also of Western Hungary. Besides dividing up the counties of Sopron, Moson and Vas, the newly re-drawn borders also split up most of the railway lines running within them as well. From the territory sliced from the three counties, the previously non-existent province of Austria, Burgenland, was established in 1922. In many cases, the new demarcation lines followed boundaries of old districts or settlements, but it was rare to find natural boundaries among them. As a result, between the two World Wars, the use of the affected railway tracks began to change similar to several contemporary Central European cases, with the exception of GYSEV (Győr–Sopron–Ebenfurth Railway Company), which could remain in its original form. This research paper aims to examine how the shift of borders in this region affected railway transport. It is based on the local historical literature on the railway, regional history and primary resources.

The Railway as a Sustainable Heritage: Monument Railways in the Service of Sustainability through the Example of the Győr‒Veszprém Railway Line

Publication Name: Chemical Engineering Transactions

Publication Date: 2023-01-01

Volume: 107

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 37-42

Description:

Nowadays, sustainability is a term that has been analysed many times in public life, among the technical and social sciences alike, examined from several sides, but at least often voiced. In the study, in relation to the sustainability of a healthy human life, it is examined how railways and their historic preservation contribute to this. As the basis of the research, it was chosen the only standard-gauge railway line in Hungary that is under monument protection railway line No. 11 between Győr and Veszprém. The research is based on the methodology of historical-architectural research: starting from the history of the railway, it explores its architectural and historical values, discusses the creation and importance of protection, and then tries to draw conclusions about the role of the railway line in sustainability by analysing social phenomena, and finally makes proposals for the role of sustainability regarding its increase. The novelty of the study is that it connects the ways of thinking of specialised fields that previously existed side by side. The purpose of monument protection is the preservation of values, which, according to the 20-th-century way of thinking, primarily serves cultural purposes. The monument protection of some parts of the analysed railway line clearly contributed to the preservation of the infrastructure. As an environmentally friendly and sustainable means of transport, the railway plays a prominent role in the healthy preservation of natural areas. This is proven by the history of the examined railway line.

Comrades in theory, outsiders in practice: Cuban and Polish workers in the Kádár era in Hungary

Publication Name: Labor History

Publication Date: 2025-01-01

Volume: Unknown

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: Unknown

Description:

This study examines the political, ethnic, and social dimensions of transnational guest worker migration to Hungary during the late Kádár era, with a focus on Cuban and Polish workers. The research explores whether an institutionalized form of exploitation ‒ resembling colonial oppression ‒ emerged under state socialism despite official ideological commitments to racial equality. It also considers whether the socialist rhetoric of international solidarity was compatible with the realities of ethnic hierarchy and exclusion. Drawing on international and domestic literature, archival documents, statistical data, press sources, and focus group interviews, the study employs a primarily qualitative methodology to analyze the lived experiences of guest workers. The findings suggest that a form of socialist-style colonial exploitation was reproduced, especially in the case of Cuban workers, and that a complex mix of latent ethnic bias and overt national stereotypes shaped efforts to integrate guest workers. Finally, the research identifies key patterns that influence the acceptance or rejection of culturally distinct labor migrants and examines the broader ideological and social contradictions that these dynamics reveal.
