Bending stiffness measurement of wounded piano strings

Publication Name: Proceedings of ISMA 2016 International Conference on Noise and Vibration Engineering and Usd2016 International Conference on Uncertainty in Structural Dynamics

Publication Date: 2016-01-01

Volume: Unknown

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 2233-2240

Description:

Bass notes of pianos exhibit high degree of inharmonicity that means that frequencies of overtones depart from integer multiples of the fundamental frequency. Small amount of inharmonicity is tolerable for musicians and listeners, but higher ones cause unpleasant metallic tone. Reducing inharmonicity the first step is to investigate all influencing factors. This paper deals with effects of bending stiffness and nonuniform winding of wounded strings. As there is no reliable information in literature on bending stiffness data, a measuring procedure has been elaborated that is based on analysis of frequencies of overtones and the mathematical model of a vibrating string. Gained bending stiffness data opens the door to further quantitative investigations to reduce inharmonicity and improve sound generation methods of digital pianos.

Towards to haptic keyboard: Modeling the piano action

Publication Name: Mechatronics 2013 Recent Technological and Scientific Advances

Publication Date: 2014-01-01

Volume: Unknown

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 49-55

Description:

Keyboards of digital pianos have moderate dynamic performance compared to that of grand pianos. Real needs emerged to emulate haptic features of a piano action by a simple device. This paper deals with analytical and experimental investigation of check and repetition phase of touch. Finding out the relationship among initial velocity of hammer, duration and magnitude of impact impulse, key position, fly of time gives sound foundation for development of a haptic keyboard that offers the same sensation for pianist as the acoustic one. Parameters of governing expressions were determined by measurements. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Magnetic issues of a haptic keyboard

Publication Name: Przeglad Elektrotechniczny

Publication Date: 2013-03-27

Volume: 89

Issue: 2 B

Page Range: 61-63

Description:

Haptic keyboards bring the same touch sensation for pianists such acoustic grand pianos. One of the main parts of a haptic device is the actuator, that exerts fairly high and fast changing force. This paper presents the design issues of a voice coil motor type actuator assembly. Magnetic field simulations are carried out to investigate the interaction between actuator units.

Optimal design of a magneto-rheological clutch

Publication Name: Mechatronics Recent Technological and Scientific Advances

Publication Date: 2011-01-01

Volume: Unknown

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 89-93

Description:

Appliances using magneto-rheological fluid (MRF) can find application in shock absorbers, brakes and clutches. Until now the spread of MRF clutches was limited by the moderate torque they can transmit. This paper summarizes the factors influencing the torque transmitted. During the design process of a prototype MRF clutch its most important geometric data have been determined by means of simulation of the magnetic circuit.

Optical torque sensor development

Publication Name: Recent Advances in Mechatronics 2008 2009

Publication Date: 2009-01-01

Volume: Unknown

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 91-96

Description:

The purpose of this study is to develop a contactless torque sensor in the mNm range. The applied optical method is based on the birefringe effect of photoelastic materials. The novelty of the modified reflective photoelastic method is the application of a photoelastic tube as a coupling and measuring element between shafts. Change in intensity of polarized light is proportional to the torque to be measured. Basics of operational principle and practical considerations are also discussed.

Determination of DC micro-motor characteristics by electrical measurements

Publication Name: Recent Advances in Mechatronics

Publication Date: 2007-12-01

Volume: Unknown

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 278-282

Description:

It is generally difficult to carry out and measure breaking moments precisely in the mNm range. Instead of traditional methods using brake and additional mechanical elements to determine torque vs. angular velocity characteristics of micro-motors this paper suggest a new procedure based on purely electrical measurements. Theoretical background of the measuring procedure is discussed detailed. The suggested method is shown in the case of a RF300E DC micro-motor. © 2007 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
