This paper presents the concept of multi-purpose virtual laboratories, a new way to design and utilize 3D virtual learning environments in higher education. The paper introduces the current state of the adoption of new virtual learning environments and proposes a new design methodology in order to improve the quality, user experience and didactic potential of virtual laboratories. To demonstrate the introduced concepts, a practical example is also presented.
