Description:
The Szigetköz region in north-west Hungary is ecologically sensitive and lies in the Danube River system. Over the past 40 years, ground water and surface water levels have varied significantly due to human activity. This study uses HYDRUS-1D code to simulate shallow ground water dynamics in 1–2 m deep soil profiles. Local meteorological data, soil types (loam, sandy loam, clay loam), vegetation (pasture, corn), and ground water levels inform the model. Results show how dry, average, and wet years affect soil moisture and recharge. The study highlights the impact of vegetation type and ground water depth on infiltration. Findings support future work on climate change, land use, and sustainable water management.
