CSR and SMEs’ competitive advantages—Results from a Hungarian city of Győr based on managing directors’ personal perception

Publication Name: Journal of Infrastructure Policy and Development

Publication Date: 2024-01-01

Volume: 8

Issue: 12

Page Range: Unknown

Description:

Today it is obvious that corporate social responsibility (CSR) is more than just a volunteer activity, it is also related to the operation of the firms and to competitive advantages. Many factors influence CSR and CSR-competitiveness relations; firm size could be the most crucial one. Originally CSR is related to large companies, although smaller firms can be active in CSR mainly in different ways with different background. Based on this idea the paper aims to explore the correlation between small and medium-sized enterprises’ (SMEs) corporate social responsibility (CSR) and competitive advantages. An interview research was conducted among thirty SMEs in a Hungarian city of Győr in 2021/22 to reveal how owner-managers interpret CSR, competitiveness and their relations. As SMEs cannot provide exact data on this topic the personal perception method was used to explore the CSR-competitiveness relation. A moderate relation was observed between CSR and competitiveness and the research revealed that different methodologies have to be applied for SMEs than large companies which results from the fact that SMEs’ CSR is less formal and lacks exact data.

The spatial extent of the operations of small and medium-sized companies in Győr based on the personal evaluation of the executives

Publication Name: Teruleti Statisztika

Publication Date: 2024-01-01

Volume: 64

Issue: 5

Page Range: 661-686

Description:

Economic processes from territorial perspective can be analyzed using various approaches such as identifying the territorial levels at which firms operate. This involves understanding where firms source their inputs from, the location of their markets and the extent of their relations with stakeholders. The paper aims to measure the spatial extent of firms based on a personal perception of small- and medium-sized enterprises’ (SMEs) owner-managers. Based on structured interviews in 2021–2022 with thirty SMEs in Győr, Hungary the paper looks for the answer to what is the spatial extent of the operations of the surveyed firms in the dimensions of inputs, outputs, relationships and corporate impacts? Exception of one of the surveyed companies, all of them are present at least at the regional level and some of them have already entered international markets as well. Firms are mostly considered local in the case of the workforce, while stocks are mainly purchased from international markets. The results of the research characterize the spatial extent of the firms, which can serve as useful information about the territorial role of SMEs for both practitioners and scholars.

OWA operators in the insurance industry

Publication Name: Journal of Infrastructure Policy and Development

Publication Date: 2024-01-01

Volume: 8

Issue: 13

Page Range: Unknown

Description:

In this paper, we examine a possible application of ordered weighted average (OWA for short) aggregation operators in the insurance industry. Aggregation operators are essential tools in decision-making when a single value is needed instead of a couple of features. Information aggregation necessarily leads to information loss, at least to a specific extent. Whether we concentrate on extreme values or middle terms, there can be cases when the most important piece of the puzzle is missing. Although the simple or weighted mean considers all the values there is a drawback: the values get the same weight regardless of their magnitude. One possible solution to this issue is the application of the so-called Ordered Weighted Averaging (OWA) operators. This is a broad class of aggregation methods, including the previously mentioned average as a special case. Moreover, using a proper parameter (the so-called orness) one can express the risk awareness of the decision-maker. Using real-life statistical data, we provide a simple model of the decision-making process of insurance companies. The model offers a decision-supporting tool for companies.

Investigating the “Resource Curse” in China: Is it Sufficient to use the Usual Methods?

Publication Name: Acta Polytechnica Hungarica

Publication Date: 2023-01-01

Volume: 20

Issue: 10

Page Range: 233-252

Description:

Our article on the study of the “Resource Curse” in Chinese provinces, was written with two objectives. First, by reviewing the international and Chinese literature and analyzing the economic development of the relevant Chinese provinces, we sought to explore whether the resource curse phenomenon exists or can be demonstrated. And second, we want to draw the reader's attention to the fact that Chinese and Asian economies in general have central planning models, the main purpose of which is to define and focus on national economic development priorities. The sub-divisions of the central development plans include development targets for each region, which naturally take into account the economic performance of each province and the factors that determine it. It follows from the latter line of thinking that the economic development of the four Chinese provinces concerned (Gansu, Guizhou, Qinghai and Shanxi) cannot be interpreted in a 'piecemeal' way, based solely on the existence or otherwise of the resource curse phenomenon. In writing this article, we also wish to draw attention to this holistic, comprehensive Chinese (Asian) way of thinking.

AMERICAN VERSUS DOMESTIC DIGITAL COMPANIES IN THE CHINESE MARKET

Publication Name: Decision Making Applications in Management and Engineering

Publication Date: 2022-10-01

Volume: 5

Issue: 2

Page Range: 120-139

Description:

The digital economy has become an increasingly important part of the world economy. It is vastly concentrated in two economies, namely, the United States and China. The main aim of our study is to investigate Chinese digital companies and government policy enabling the rapid development of the country’s digital economy and the largest American digital companies’ performance in the Chinese market. Our findings show that the largest American digital companies, which are globally active players, usually have a very limited market share in different segments of the Chinese digital economy or have been forced to leave the Chinese market after a short period of operation. In the future, Chinese government policy will continue to ensure the priority role of domestic digital companies in the upgrading and structural transformation of the Chinese economy driven by services, high-tech sectors, and consumption while limiting the role of American digital companies.

Active citizenship and civic competencies in the Hungarian City of győr

Publication Name: Citizenship Teaching and Learning

Publication Date: 2020-03-01

Volume: 15

Issue: 1

Page Range: 5-23

Description:

This article is based on the premise that participatory democracy needs active citizens, and active citizens need civic competencies. The goal of this study is to illustrate previous research into active citizenship and civic competencies and to add the own concept of the authors to the literature. The article also provides empirical results from a survey into active citizenship carried out among citizens in Győr, Hungary, 2017. A total of 254 citizens filled out the online and offline questionnaire. The survey sample methods included random and snowball sampling. The sample does not represent the population of Győr, 64.3 per cent were women and about half of the sample were graduate citizens, so the results can be interpreted only to the respondents. Results offer an insight into what citizens think of the concept of active citizenship and which civic competencies they regard as important active participation in society. The article also demonstrates guidance for practitioners and researchers and it adds to the literature on active citizenship. It is possible to believe that knowing what kind of civic competencies people need could be useful to know how to be more active in the society.

Through the blurry looking glass-SDGs in the GRI reports

Publication Name: Resources

Publication Date: 2019-06-01

Volume: 8

Issue: 2

Page Range: Unknown

Description:

"Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development" was agreed upon in 2015 by the global community and proposes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for the period between 2015 and 2030. Since the greater integration of goals was an explicit claim, there are numerous overlaps among them. One of the novelties of the SDGs is that, in order to achieve the set goals, the Agenda 2030 addresses not only the states but the businesses as well. In our study, the relationships between the SDGs were analyzed on the base of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) indicators linked to the goals. The analysis was carried out by cluster analysis. Our results indicate that there is a strong relationship to be found among nine of the 17 SDGs. That relationship is mainly technical, which is caused by the number of aligned (genuine) GRI indicators. Though there are relationships between the SDGs as well, their strength is much weaker. According to our classification of SDGs, we suggest that the gap of business attention among SDGs is smaller than it is showed by KPMG.
