Description:
Tour guiding plays a pivotal role in shaping visitor experiences, yet it remains underexplored within tourism scholarship. Recent discourse has begun to address key professional challenges, including remuneration, legal ambiguities, digital adaptation, market competition, and evolving competency expectations. Notably, price disparities in freelance tour guiding services across the European Union – especially in countries such as Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Poland – have intensified professional tensions and raised concerns about economic equity within the sector. This study investigates pricing variations in freelance tour guiding across major European destinations, with a specific focus on Budapest's position within the continental market. Drawing on data from the Top 100 City Destinations Index (Euromonitor International, 2024), the top 38 European cities were selected. Prices were collected via automated web scraping from GetYourGuide, a leading global platform for booking guided experiences, capturing publicly available freelance guide rates as indicators of real-time market conditions. The analysis reveals significant inter-city pricing disparities, positioning Budapest as a competitively priced yet frequently undervalued destination in the European freelance tour guiding landscape. These findings highlight the need for more robust policy frameworks and pricing transparency to support fair labor conditions and sustainable professional practices in tourism.
