Urban scaling of football followership on Twitter

Social sciences have an important challenge today to take advantage of new research opportunities provided by large amounts of data generated by online social networks. Because of its marketing value, sports clubs are also motivated in creating and maintaining a stable audience in social media. In this paper, we analyze followers of prominent footballs clubs on Twitter by obtaining their home locations. We then measure how city size is connected to the number of followers using the theory of urban scaling. The results show that the scaling exponents of club followers depend on the income of a country. These findings could be used to understand the structure and potential growth areas of global football audiences.

Better Memory Performance for Images in MaxWhere 3D VR Space than in Website

This paper shows that people remember better to an image if it is inserted directly into a 3D virtual space than if it is inserted into a webpage. In our study 22 participants took part, they had to read articles displayed in the MaxWhere virtual collaboration software. The individuals had to answer some basic questions about the articles and then in the memory test they were asked whether they have seen an advertisement. Half of the participants saw the advertisements in the sidebar of the articles, for the other group it has been inserted directly into the virtual space. A better memory performance was recorded when the image was placed in the virtual space.

This paper investigates the unique potential of VR environments to serve as a comprehensive tool for communication and memory management. The paper uncovers intricate - and in some sense holistic - links between certain kinds of VR spaces and existing frameworks for the design and analysis of conceptual mappings, and shows how VR spaces can do more than just provide appealing visual experiences, by capturing the psychology of how new memories are formed. The paper provides multiple examples from the MaxWhere VR platform to support its main arguments, and concludes with a discussion on what these arguments, if accepted as correct, will mean for AI-enhanced CogInfoCom systems in the future.

Desktop VR and the Use of Supplementary Visual Information

A 3D desktop virtual reality could provide an overview of program windows; thus users can see supplementary information. The aim of this study was to compare the use of this extra information in desktop VR and in a classic 2D browser. To test this, a between-subject design was realized with 53 participants (VR group: 26; browser group: 27). The MaxWhere VR environment was used as desktop VR and the Google Chrome as browser. The participants had to complete a task, while they could see their performance visually. At the final questionnaire, they had to estimate their performance and indicate their basis for this estimation. There was a significant difference in the estimation accuracy between the two groups, for those who indicated the supplementary visual information as their main source of estimation. Those who completed the task in desktop VR could estimate their performance more accurately, so they remembered better the supplementary visual information.

Elasto-limited plastic analysis of structures for probabilistic conditions

With applying plastic analysis and design methods, significant saving in material can be obtained. However, as a result of this benefit excessive plastic deformations and large residual displacements might develop, which in turn might lead to unserviceability and collapse of the structure. In this study, for deterministic problem the residual deformation of structures is limited by considering a constraint on the complementary strain energy of the residual forces. For probabilistic problem the constraint for the complementary strain energy of the residual forces is given randomly and critical stresses updated during the iteration. Limit curves are presented for the plastic limit load factors. The results show that these constraints have significant effects on the load factors. The formulations of the deterministic and probabilistic problems lead to mathematical programming which are solved by the use of nonlinear algorithm.

Papers dealing with optimization problems in public transportation usually follow the same methodology. The problem is modeled in a classical mathematical way, and then either solved directly using mathematical programming methods, or by the application of combinatorial heuristics. Even if this process yields an optimal solution, it might prove complicated to apply the achieved results directly in practice. In a transportation system, solutions for individual problems are only part of a more complex process, and they are often used only to aid experts in making decisions. However, the structure of the problem and the steps taken to achieve the solution are often lost in the solution process, while they might prove extremely useful to a human planner. This paper introduces a linearly priced timed automata model for the bus schedule assignment problem. With its help, the steps taken to achieve any feasible solution of the problem can be easily reconstructed, providing another tool for human experts to use in their decision planning process.

Comparison of self-reported and observed road safety performance indicators

The first concept of road safety performance indicators was published by European Transport Safety Council, Brussels in 2001. Hungary has long and reliable time series of safety belt wearing and child safety seat usage rates in passenger cars. These rates are based on real roadside observations and representative sample, meeting the requirements of international road accident databases. The methodology of the data collection has been further developed during the recent years, but we paid attention to the possibility of comparison with the earlier data and consistent analysis of time series. Although the roadside observations could not have been organized in each year, the trends can be seen relatively well. Our initial hypothesis was that the self-reported data always show a bit "better" picture about the driving behaviour than the observed ones, since the people are not sure that their data will be handled in an anonym way. Based on these results we can say that the ESRA results are relatively good estimations of the real safety belt wearing rates.

Dietary fibers, prebiotics, and exopolysaccharides produced by lactic acid bacteria: Potential health benefits with special regard to cholesterol-lowering effects

The gastrointestinal (GIT) microbiota, which plays a crucial role in human health, is influenced by a number of factors including diet. Consumption of specific dietary ingredients, such as dietary fibers and prebiotics, is an avenue by which the microbiota can be positively modulated. These substances may also reduce serum cholesterol levels through various mechanisms. Interest has increased in methods of reducing blood cholesterol level, because dyslipidemia is recognized as a contributory risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases. Several drugs have been developed for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia; however, undesirable side effects were observed, which have caused concerns about their long-term therapeutic use. Alternatively, many nonpharmacological approaches were tested to reduce elevated serum cholesterol levels. Dietary fibers and prebiotics have particularly beneficial effects on the GIT microbiome, and can also reduce serum cholesterol level through various mechanisms. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are potentially capable of synthesizing different polysaccharides, e.g. exopolysaccharides (EPS), which may play a role as prebiotics. LAB-based EPS have the potential to affect the gastrointestinal microbiome and reduce cholesterol. However, as dietary fibers comprise a complex group of substances with remarkably diverse structures, properties, and impacts, EPS also differ greatly and show a multitude of beneficial health effects. This review discusses the current knowledge related to the effects of dietary fibers and prebiotics on the human GIT microbiome, the prebiotic properties of EPS produced by LAB, and the health-promoting benefits of these polymers with special emphasis being given to cholesterol lowering.

Safety Assessment of Different Stability Design Rules for Beam-columns

In EC3-EN 1993-1-1, there are three different methods to check the global stability resistance of steel columns, beams, and beam-columns. The design formulas are based on buckling curves, which are available for purely compressed or purely bended members with uniform cross-sections. Beam-columns are subjected to compressive force and the bending moment can be designed using the so-called interaction formula where the interaction factors may be alternatively determined. Over the past few years, many research groups have worked on correcting and improving the accuracy of the available design methods for steel members. The aim of this paper is to compare the accuracy of the different revised methods for steel beam-columns. In order to investigate the accuracy of the above-mentioned design methods, numerous geometrically and materially nonlinear analyses with imperfections (also known as GMNIA) were executed by previous research projects. The results of the semi-probabilistic safety assessments may help the designer choose the most reasonable method for their design works.
