Description of an arboreal oribatid mite species of the genus Ovobates (Acari, Oribatida, Oribatulidae), based on adult and nymphs from Vietnam

Publication Name: Zootaxa

Publication Date: 2026-01-14

Volume: 5748

Issue: 3

Page Range: 112-124

Description:

The genus Ovobates (Oribatida, Oribatulidae) comprises two species distributed in the Oriental region. A new species— Ovobates ochrocarpicus sp. nov.—is described, based on adult and nymphal instars, collected from branches of the ochrocarp tree in southern Vietnam. The adult of the new species is characterized by the presence of the five pairs of notogastral porose areas and the epimeral formula 3-1-3-3. The nymphs of the new species are characterized by presence of clavate bothridial seta; setiform interlamellar seta; short, setiform, thin gastronotic setae c1, c2, da, la; medium-sized to long, setiform, gastronotic setae dm c3, lm, p2, and p3; medium-sized, bacilliform gastronotic setae dp, h1, and h3; long, subflagellate, gastronotic setae lp, h2, and p1; epimeral formula 3-1-2-2 in tritonymph; and seven setae on the leg tarsus IV in protonymph. The generic diagnosis and a morphological comparison of adults and juvenile instars of the known species of Ovobates are presented.

A new sexually dimorphic species of Pirnodus (Acari, Oribatida, Oripodidae) associated with trees in southern Vietnam

Publication Name: Persian Journal of Acarology

Publication Date: 2026-01-01

Volume: 15

Issue: 1

Page Range: Unknown

Description:

Pirnodus (Oribatida, Oripodidae) currently comprises seven species, collectively distributed in the tropical and southern Palaearctic areas. A new arboreal species – P. arboreus sp. nov. – is described, based on adults collected from branches of different trees in the Cat Tien National Park, southern Vietnam. The new species is characterized by distinct sexual dimorphism, e.g., interlamellar seta long, setiform in females versus medium-sized, phylliform in males, posterior part of notogaster not depressed in females versus depressed in males, notogastral seta h1 well developed, setiform in females versus vestigial in males, notogastral seta lm located medial to la in females versus anteromedial in males, genital and anal apertures distanced from each other in females versus genital aperture shifted to anal aperture and connected to it in males, and dorsal side of tarsi I and II without tooth in females versus with tooth in males. Summary of distribution and habitats of the known species of Pirnodus are provided.

Three new Hutufeideria Hirschmann & Hiramatsu, 1977 from Southeast Asia, with the description of Hutufeideriidae fam. nov. (Acari, Mesostigmata)

Publication Name: Zookeys

Publication Date: 2026-01-01

Volume: Unknown

Issue: 1280

Page Range: 63-81

Description:

Three new species of the genus Hutufeideria are described from the Oriental region. The first species, H. perakensis sp. nov., was collected in Malaysia and differs from its congeners in the presence of a strongly sclerotized furrow on the dorsal shield and very long setae on the central area of the dorsal shield. The second species, H. sarawakensis sp. nov., was found in Sarawak (Malaysia) and differs from other species of the genus in the shape of the setae on the caudal part of the dorsal shield and the shape of the female genital shield. The third species, H. sumatraensis sp. nov., was collected from Sumatra (Indonesia) and has a tile-like sculptural pattern on the ventral shield; the dorsal shield is covered with large and irregular pits, and bears serrate setae on the caudal margins of the dorsal shield; these represent a unique character combination within the genus. Hutufeideriidae fam. nov. is diagnosed, with Hutufeideria as the type genus. A list of known species is provided.
