An S-graph based approach for multi-mode resource-constrained project scheduling with time-varying resource capacities

The Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) is a general problem class of scheduling problems. It even contains the well-known job shop scheduling problem as a special case. In these problems, jobs demand different amounts from multiple resources at once. The goal is to minimize completion time while satisfying resource capacity constraints throughout the schedule. The RCPSP has several variations and generalizations, one of which is the multi-mode problem. Multiple operation modes are given for jobs, differing in resource usages and execution times. Another generalization is where resources have time-varying capacities instead of a constant limit. The S-graph framework was developed for batch process scheduling and used successfully in various applications. The advantages of this approach motivate research to extend its capabilities to more general problem classes and apply it in various specialized case studies. The authors have previously presented an extension of the S-graph framework for RCPSP and its multi-mode generalization. In this work, a further extension is proposed for handling time-varying capacities. The method relies on a model transformation technique and recent algorithmic developments of the framework.

Parallel solution of an electrostatic field problem-case study

The paper presents a parallel approach for the efficient solution of a simple 1D Laplace-Poisson equation problem by parallel finite element method. This problem is a case study. The non-overlapping domain decomposition method has been used to cut the problem into sub-regions or also called sub-domains, and it reduces the large mass matrix into smaller parts. The independent subdomains, and the assembling of these equation systems can be handled by the independent processors of a supercomputer, i.e. in a parallel way. The results of parallel finite element method have been compared to the results of serial finite element method as well as the analytical results.

After presenting the significance of the K0 factor the paper discusses some aspects of the formulae for the coefficient of earth pressure at rest, mainly the well-known Jaky's equation. An improvement for the critical Jaky's assumption is introduced and a modified K0 ...φ relationship is deduced. All the formulae originating from Jaky's idea and some other continuum mechanical or speculative equations are tested against 153 measured data. The original Jaky's equation, and the ones from Vierbiczky and Matsuoka-Sakakibara were found to be the best. -from Author

This study compares three fuzzy based model approaches for solving a realistic extension of the Time Dependent Traveling Salesman Problem. First, the triple Fuzzy (3FTD TSP) model, where the uncertain costs between the nodes depend on time are expressed by fuzzy sets. Second, the intuitionistic fuzzy (IFTD TSP) approach, where including hesitation was suitable for quantifying the jam regions and the bimodal rush hour periods during the day. Third, the interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets model, that calculates the interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy weighted arithmetic average (IIFWAA) of the edges’ confirmability degrees and non-confirmability degrees, was contributing in minimizing the information loss in cost (delay) calculation between nodes.

Europeanization of the Hungarian legal order: From convergence to cancellation?

Since the political transition of Hungary in the late 1980s, the law of the European Union has been the primary external influence on the modernization of domestic legislation. This chapter aims to illustrate that Hungary, as a passive and receptive actor, implemented all components of eu law which were prerequisites for eu membership. This has resulted in an intense convergence in rules and values of the domestic and eu legal order until its accession to the eu in 2004. After accession, however, Hungary started to move from a constructive to confrontational Member State, which has led to a substantial divergence between the laws of Hungary and eu law. This chapter analyzes these processes and attempts to identify the possible consequences of this alteration in the Hungarian stance to the adoption of rules, values, and regulatory models originating from eu law. It will be demonstrated with case studies ranging from recent Hungarian economic legislation to the constitutional reform, illustrating how this new role of Hungary negatively affects the adaptability of Hungarian legal order and leads to canceling the convergence to the European law.

Interpolation in homogenous fuzzy signature rule bases

Fuzzy signature sets (FSigSets) are extensions of the original fuzzy set concept, and also of the Vector Valued Fuzzy Set notion. In a FSigSet rule base the (input) universe of discourse X is mapped into a set of hierarchically grouped fuzzy sets, and each element of X has a 'membership degree' consisting of a rooted tree with membership degrees at each leaf and aggregations at the intermediate vertices. The structure of the tree is identical for each element in the case of homogenous FSigSets, and so are the aggregations, depending only on the position of the vertex. Interpolation in fuzzy rule bases allows the calculation of a conclusion in the output universe Y belonging to an observation even if there are gaps in the rule base and the observation does not intersect with any of the antecedent sets. The key question here is how to determine the degree of similarity, or inversely, the distance, of any observation from the surrounding antecedents of the rules in the base, so that the distance incorporates the information involved with the close connection of the features in the sub-groups, and the aggregations expressing the form of this connection. A solution is proposed, and a pair of numerical examples is presented.

Continuity and Discontinuity in the Interaction of Regional and Corporate Cultures: Potsdam (Germany) and Győr (Hungary)

The paper compares the specific identical and different features of the relationship and interaction between corporate and regional cultures in Potsdam (Germany), on the one hand, and in Gyo{double acute}r (Hungary), on the other hand, based on the empirical research results obtained in the Corporate Culture and Regional Embeddedness project. The major conclusion is that regional and, to some extent, broadly defined corporate cultures survived the socialist episode of history in both regions to a more pronounced extent than in the rest of the respective countries, thereby representing a high degree of continuity. Although the driving forces were different, embedded in a set of specific factors, the mobilization of this social capital produced a vicious circle after the transition to market economy in both regions, making the adjustment to the new situation more successful than in the other regions. © 2011 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
