In the second half of the 20th century, humanity went through an unprecedented technical and technological development. As a result, technological innovations emerged in the course of the last third of the century which have now become indispensable parts of everyday life, the whole society and even the state. Among them, we must mention the IT sector, which has effectively enabled global contacts and communication between people and organizations across different parts of the world through various tools, programs and networks. Moreover, it also facilitates and simplifies everyday tasks both in the private and the public sector. Cyberspace is a unique and complex phenomenon, since it can be described with physical and geographical concepts, but in addition, its virtual features also have extraordinary relevance. As a result of its remarkable expansion, fundamental areas such as sociology, geopolitics, security policy or warfare must also be reconsidered. This paper provides an overview of the new types of security challenges for the 21st century, most notably security risks related to the cyberspace. In addition, some aspects of cyber warfare, such as cyber intelligence, cyber attack and cyber defense are examined. Particular attention is given to the question whether a cyber attack in itself can reach the level of an armed attack, and if so, what means can be used by the State under attack in defense.

Vibration damping measurement on car windshields

Description:

Knowledge of the damping properties of a windshield is a fundamental element of the acoustical characterization of a car. The measuring method of damping for a windshield is presented in the paper. The damping loss factor – as a basic measure of mechanical damping – was determined experimentally by two means: the reverberation time from impact hammer testing as well as the modal behavior from 3D laser scanning vibrometer measurements. The results proved that the modal shapes have a fundamental effect on the measured damping values.

Does effective use of maxwhere VR relate to the individual spatial memory and mental rotation skills?

Desktop virtual realities are becoming increasingly widespread. Thus, it is important to measure if it can be really a next step in the evolution of computer science. This researched aimed to examine whether there is a relationship between the effectiveness of completing a task in MaxWhere VR and the users’ cognitive characteristics: namely the spatial memory (measured by the Corsi-task) and the mental rotation ability. Thirty-one participants took part in this research and their results showed no relationship between the examined spatial abilities and work effectiveness. For navigating in the virtual space, the built-in CogiNav technology of MaxWhere was used. The participants rated their navigational experience in the virtual environment. There was no statistically significant relationship with the other measured variables. These results suggest that this VR can be used by anyone, independently from their spatial memory or mental rotation skill.

Development of a low-fat lactose-free dairy spread containing viable lactic acid bacteria – Part 2: Texture analysis and sensory evaluation

The objective of our work was to compare the main texture characteristics of the low-fat (30%), lactose-free dairy spread developed by us, containing viable lactic acid bacteria, and those of commercially available dairy spreads by an objective, reproducible, instrumental test, and then to assess the expected market reaction to our new product. The results of the rheological tests have shown that, in terms of its texture, our lactose-free dairy spread is similar to currently commercially available similar dairy products of adequate quality. Compared to 25 to 39% fat products, it is neither softer, nor stickier, its spreadability is close to that of usual dairy spreads. The judges (250 people) found the flavor and texture of the developed product significantly better (P<0.05) than those of one of the traditional dairy spreads that has been available in stores for a long time. However, in terms of spreadability, the latter dairy product was found to be superior (P<0.05). It was found that our new product could be received well when placed on the market, however, it should be emphasized during its introduction that, in addition to the ideal texture characteristics and nutritional physiology properties of the well-known and popular dairy spreads, it also has added functional benefits since it is lactose-free and contains viable lactic acid bacteria.

Wavelet analysis and structural entropy based intelligent classification method for combustion engine cylinder surfaces

Structural entropy is a good candidate for characterizing roughness of surfaces as it is sensitive not only to the general shape of the surface, but also to the rate of the high and low surface points. Wavelet analysis of the surface can separate the larger-scale behavior from the fine details, and together with the structural entropy it can define a behavior profile for the surface which is typically slightly different for new and for worn tribological surfaces. Also it is important to know whether the method of the surface scan has influence on the structural entropy’s wavelet analysis profile, as the lower cost images based on silicone replica and optical scanner have less sensitivity than the higher cost contact scan of the prepared real surface parts. An intelligent fuzzy classification scheme is introduced to characterize surfaces according to both their degree of wear and method of the surface measurement. The basis of the classification is the structural entropies of the original and the first wavelet transform of the height scan of the new and worn surfaces.

Validation of the overall stability design methods (OSDM) for tapered members

Two new stability design methods are demonstrated and validated: the Overall Strength Reduction Method (OSRM) and the Overall Imperfection Method (OIM). Both methods are based on the linear buckling analysis (LBA) of global structural models and use the standard reduction curves. The OSRM is formulated in the classic way using generalized slenderness and reduction factors while the OIM uses equivalent amplitude for the buckling mode based geometrical imperfection. These new design methods cover all types of buckling modes, which can be calculated by LBA of structural models composed of tapered members with arbitrary support conditions and subjected to any complex loading. This paper clarifies the mechanical interpretation and proper calculation of all the components of the two methods in case of tapered members with arbitrary support conditions. The validation is performed on GMNIA results for several different buckling situations of tapered members proving the accuracy of the OSDM.

A population based metaheuristic for the minimum latency problem

In this paper we present a population based metaheuristic for solving the Minimum Latency Problem, which is the combination of bacterial evolutionary algorithm with local search techniques. The algorithm was tested on TSPLIB benchmark instances, and the results are competitive in terms of accuracy and runtimes with the state-of-the art methods. Except for two instances our algorithm found the best-known solution, and for the biggest tested instance it outperformed the best-known solution. The runtime was on average 30% faster than the most efficient method in the literature.

Linear state space modeling and control teaching in maxwhere virtual laboratory

Description:

It is widely known that virtual laboratories can improve and complete university lectures. This paper presents laboratories, that allow engineering students to design a pole placement based controller for typical control problems: inverted pendulum, Furuta pendulum, crane, ball and beam. The dynamics of the plants and instructions for controller design and test are provided on smartboards of the virtual laboratory. The controller can be designed by the help of Octave Online. Finally, the controller performance can be studied by the model of the real-life application. The mathematical models and controller design are presented as well as the experiences in the virtual laboratory of control engineering.

Maxwhere 3D capabilities contributing to the enhanced efficiency of the trello 2D management software

This paper presents an experiment comparing the number of user operations and effectiveness of digital workflow in different cases. The main goal of this study is to systematically compare the effectiveness of Trello collaborative project management software in Windows 2D operating system and on the MaxWhere 3D VR platform. All comparisons are made based on a novel framework that focuses on both quantitative and qualitative assessments of user interactions required for the completion of digital projects within different computational environments. The results of the experiment, evaluated in terms of the proposed framework, point to the conclusion that when using Trello in conjunction with MaxWhere’s 3D VR spaces, users are able to accomplish the same digital workflows with 72% less elementary user operations, and with 80% less time spent on overview-related tasks. In the 3D experiment, the value of the Monitoring Density metric introduced in this paper increased almost 300-fold, from 125 to 3125. Based on these results, the paper concludes that the MaxWhere 3D VR platform offers project managers a number of ways to accomplish tasks that would otherwise require extremely complicated digital workflows in more traditional 2D environments.
