Towards a stable robotic object manipulation through 2D-3D features tracking: Regular paper

Publication Name: International Journal of Advanced Robotic Systems

Publication Date: 2013-06-12

Volume: 10

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: Unknown

Description:

In this paper, a new object tracking system is proposed to improve the object manipulation capabilities of service robots. The goal is to continuously track the state of the visualized environment in order to send visual information in real time to the path planning and decision modules of the robot; that is, to adapt the movement of the robotic system according to the state variations appearing in the imaged scene. The tracking approach is based on a probabilistic collaborative tracking framework developed around a 2D patch-based tracking system and a 2D-3D point features tracker. The real-time visual information is composed of RGB-D data streams acquired from state-of-the-art structured light sensors. For performance evaluation, the accuracy of the developed tracker is compared to a traditional marker-based tracking system which delivers 3D information with respect to the position of the marker. © 2013 Licensee InTech.

The long and short of asking questions about income: A comparison using data from Hungary

Publication Name: Quality and Quantity

Publication Date: 2013-06-01

Volume: 47

Issue: 4

Page Range: 1957-1969

Description:

A lot of research on income mobility and income inequality is based on survey questions about income. Various question formats are being used. Researchers seem to assume that the actual format used delivers the best estimate of the "true" income. However, surprisingly little empirical support is available for this claim. We implemented an experimental design using the short and long versions of income questions in a Hungarian survey. Results show an overall positive difference between the long and short version. The differences are related to the income components (wages and salaries, transfers, and assets), and respondent characteristics, controlling for the effect of the order of the two versions of income questions. Based on the results, we provide some recommendations for implementing income questions in surveys. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface water and bed sediments of the Hungarian upper section of the Danube River

Publication Name: Environmental Monitoring and Assessment

Publication Date: 2013-06-01

Volume: 185

Issue: 6

Page Range: 4619-4631

Description:

This study was performed to elucidate the distribution, concentration trend and possible source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface water and bed sediments of the Hungarian upper section of the Danube River and the Moson Danube branch. A total of 217 samples (water and sediments) were collected from four different sampling sites in the period of 2001-2010 and analysed for the 16 priority US Environmental Protection Agency PAHs. Concentrations of total 16 PAHs (ΣPAHs) in water samples ranged from 25 to 1,208 ng/L, which were predominated by two- and three-ring PAHs. The ΣPAH concentrations in sediments ranged from 8.3 to 1,202.5 ng/g dry weight. Four-ring PAHs including fluoranthene and pyrene were the dominant species in sediment samples. A selected number of concentration ratios of specific PAH compounds were calculated to evaluate the possible sources of PAH contamination. The ratios reflected a pattern of pyrogenic input as a major source of PAHs. The levels of PAHs determined were compared with other sections of the Danube and other regions of the world. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

Comparison of the different design software tools for the brushless DC motor designing

Publication Name: Pollack Periodica

Publication Date: 2013-04-01

Volume: 8

Issue: 1

Page Range: 179-188

Description:

The paper presents simulation results of a two-dimensional permanent magnet synchronous motor, which were calculated by the help of the Infolytica MotorSolve and of the COMSOL Multiphysics, as well. The simulation results were compared with each other focusing on the torque, the magnetic flux density and the magnetic potential of the permanent magnet synchronous motor.

Traffic safety impacts of irregular overtaking in left-turn lanes at road intersections outside built-up areas

Publication Name: Pollack Periodica

Publication Date: 2013-04-01

Volume: 8

Issue: 1

Page Range: 41-51

Description:

Overtaking is a high risk maneuver for road users, still drivers often accept this risk, moreover they often commit irregular overtaking maneuvers. The paper gives some overview on traffic violations and irregular overtaking maneuvers. Left-turn lanes on major roads are usual elements of un-signalized at-grade junctions on two-lane roads outside urban areas. In several cases the left-turn lane, built for safety reasons, has the unintended negative effect, of becoming a dangerous spot. The paper analyses overtaking maneuvers at left-turn lanes on Hungarian roads. Site surveys were completed at typical sites outside built-up areas. Relationships between the frequency of irregular maneuvers, accident statistics, geometric parameters and traffic data are analyzed.

Magnetic issues of a haptic keyboard

Publication Name: Przeglad Elektrotechniczny

Publication Date: 2013-03-27

Volume: 89

Issue: 2 B

Page Range: 61-63

Description:

Haptic keyboards bring the same touch sensation for pianists such acoustic grand pianos. One of the main parts of a haptic device is the actuator, that exerts fairly high and fast changing force. This paper presents the design issues of a voice coil motor type actuator assembly. Magnetic field simulations are carried out to investigate the interaction between actuator units.

Calculation of magnetic component of wire antenna electromagnetic field

Publication Name: Przeglad Elektrotechniczny

Publication Date: 2013-03-27

Volume: 89

Issue: 2 B

Page Range: 21-24

Description:

The possibility of analytical solution to calculation of azimuthal component of magnetic field intensity of wire antenna simulated by shortcircuit current is demonstrated. For this purpose boundary condition on a cylindrical surface corresponding to the antenna surface presented by Fourier series is proposed.

An economic prediction of refinement coefficients in wavelet-based adaptive methods for electron structure calculations

Publication Name: Journal of Computational Chemistry

Publication Date: 2013-03-05

Volume: 34

Issue: 6

Page Range: 460-465

Description:

The wave function of a many electron system contains inhomogeneously distributed spatial details, which allows to reduce the number of fine detail wavelets in multiresolution analysis approximations. Finding a method for decimating the unnecessary basis functions plays an essential role in avoiding an exponential increase of computational demand in wavelet-based calculations. We describe an effective prediction algorithm for the next resolution level wavelet coefficients, based on the approximate wave function expanded up to a given level. The prediction results in a reasonable approximation of the wave function and allows to sort out the unnecessary wavelets with a great reliability. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Investigation of the fault tolerance of the PIM-SM IP multicast routing protocol for IPTV purposes

Publication Name: Infocommunications Journal

Publication Date: 2013-03-01

Volume: 5

Issue: 1

Page Range: 21-28

Description:

IPTV services should use an IP multicast solution for a network bandwidth efficient delivery of the media contents. PIM-SM is the most commonly used IP multicast routing protocol in IPTV systems. A short introduction to the operation of PIM-SM is given. Its fault tolerance is examined by experimenting on a mesh topology multicast test network built up by XORP routers in a virtualizcd environment. Different fault scenarios are played and different parameters of PIM-SM and OSPF are examined if they influence and how they influence the outage time of an IPTV service. A formal model is given for the service outage time of the IPTV service on the basis of the results of the experiments.
