Design thinking for innovation in 3D VR over-voltage protection with memristor

This paper shows an example of CogInfoCom as during analyses the operation of a memristor in a real 3D VR based teaching. This paper looks at the possibility of the application of a macroscopic memristor (MR), not yet available, combined with a spark gap for over-voltage protection purposes. During teaching the memristor as a disruptive technologies the lecturers and the students do a close cooperative work in the 3D VR space, using several mathematical softwares for analyzing of not yet avaliable memristor, so the humans and ICT are not separable on cognitive level. In this 3D VR education the cooperation of the intelligent systems with humans help to analyse, systemize the information and create new information. Memristors will possibly find applications in the field of electromagnetic compatibility, specifically in over-voltage protection, so it is timely to include it in the curriculum of electrical engineering education in BsC level. The examination of a physically non-existent memristor is made possible by 3D VR space and mathematical and infocommunication softwares. So, presenting another cost-effective opportunity for the educational applicability of VR.

Several methods have been developed for simulating non-stationary and non-Gaussian processes in packaging vibration testing, encompassing unique methods for the segmentation of road vehicle vibrations. However, only a limited number of those consider spectral characteristics. Thus, the current paper introduces a novel segmentation algorithm conducted in the time-frequency domain. The spectral characteristics obtained by short-time Fourier transform are compared by multiple hypothesis tests to find changepoints in a wheeled vehicle vibration sample. Different post hoc procedures are introduced against the inflating Type I. error.

The role of democracy and institutional quality on environmental performance: empirical evidence using a stochastic directional distance model

This paper investigates the role of institutional quality and democratic governance in enhancing environmental performance across global economies. As countries confront escalating environmental challenges, understanding these factors is crucial for achieving sustainable development. Despite existing literature emphasizing the importance of high-quality institutions and democratic governance in improving environmental performance, empirical evidence remains inconsistent. Our study refines this understanding by exploring how specific dimensions of institutional quality and varying degrees of democracy impact environmental performance. Basically, we use a stochastic directional distance model to assess how democracy and institutional quality directly affect environmental performance in an unbalanced heterogeneous sample (127 economies) between 1996 and 2018. We find that high institutional quality generally improves environmental performance, though its impact varies with different degrees of democracy. The synergy between higher institutional quality and democratic governance enhances environmental performance, though the effects’ magnitude and direction are context-dependent. This paper provides new insights into how institutional quality and democratic governance work together to enhance environmental performance, offering valuable implications for policy development aimed at balancing economic growth with ecological sustainability.

Weed species composition of small-scale farmlands bears a strong crop-related and environmental signature

Weed species loss due to intensive agricultural land use has raised the need to understand how traditional cropland management has sustained a diverse weed flora. We evaluated to what extent cultivation practices and environmental conditions affect the weed species composition of a small-scale farmland mosaic in Central Transylvania (Romania). We recorded the abundance of weed species and 28 environmental, management and site context variables in 299 fields of maize, cereal and stubble. Using redundancy analysis, we revealed 22 variables with significant net effects, which explained 19.2% of the total variation in species composition. Cropland type had the most pronounced effect on weed composition with a clear distinction between cereal crops, cereal stubble and maize crops. Beyond these differences, the environmental context of croplands was a major driver of weed composition, with significant effects of geographic position, altitude, soil parameters (soil pH, texture, salt and humus content, CaCO3, P2O5, K2O, Na and Mg), as well as plot location (edge vs. core position) and surrounding habitat types (arable field, road margin, meadow, fallow, ditch). Performing a variation partitioning for the cropland types one by one, the environmental variables explained most of the variance compared with crop management. In contrast, when all sites were combined across different cropland types, the crop-specific factors were more important in explaining variance in weed community composition.

Unveiling the blueprint for rural digital prosperity: A comparative examination of top 100 digital counties in China

The current research focus in the field of digital rural development revolves around achieving high-quality digital rural construction and addressing the digital divide in different regions. This is particularly significant in China, where the issue has grown increasingly prominent. To delineate the pathway for rural digitalization and bridge the digital divide, we have constructed a Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework, drawing upon configuration theory. Utilizing data from China's Top 100 Digital Rural Counties and applying the methods of Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) and Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA), we identified the configurational paths necessary to achieve high-quality digital rural construction and discerned the nature of the digital divide across various regions. The findings show that: 1) none of the single antecedent conditions is a necessary condition for achieving a high level of digital rural construction. 2) There are four configurational paths for high-quality digital rural construction: technology-organization combination, technology-organization optimization, technology-organization symbiosis, and environmental integration. 3) Further analyses show that the configurational path for high-quality rural digitalization in the southeast coastal areas is organization-led, multi-coordinated, and technology-environment driven. In contrast, for inland provinces, it is technology-led, technology-innovation, and technology-external pressure. Moreover, a comparative analysis of regional differences shows that the high-quality digital rural construction in the southeast coastal provinces presents a well-rounded development type, whereas for the inland provinces it demonstrates a development mode of technology-driven under government leadership. The findings provide valuable insights for rural digitalization research and shed light on bridging the digital divide.

Regenerative Braking Optimization of Lightweight Vehicle based on Vehicle Model

The usage of regenerative braking highly improves the overall energy efficiency of electric vehicles. In this paper, the model-based optimization of the torque profile is determined in the regenerative braking process of a lightweight electric vehicle. For the optimization, measurement-based vehicle model was used, where the extended powertrain model was set up, including the regenerative operation. The whole model was elaborated in MATLAB Simulink environment, where genetic algorithm (GA) was applied for the optimization. The resulted optimized braking curve was applied to control the experimental vehicle and field test were made to validate the optimization results. The results of the presented work can be directly used to further improve the drive cycle efficiency of the urban electric vehicles. The application of optimized driving strategies, including regenerative braking, could contribute to further energy and pollution reduction in urban transportation.

New Buckling Curve for a Compressed Member with Cold-Formed Channel Cross-Section

The verification of a column made from a lipped cold-formed channel section, subjected to pure axial compression relative to the gross cross-section, often results in a combined verification of bending and compression due to the appearance of a shift of the centroid of its effective cross-section. Following Eurocode 3 rules, this requires the determination of two distinct effective cross-sections and various interaction factors. This paper, based on an analytic approach, offers a modification to the actual buckling curve, based on Ayrton–Perry formulation, to include the second-order effects raised by the eventual shift of the effective centroid due to local buckling of the compressed web plate. This eliminates the need to use an interaction formula. The modified buckling curve is verified based on a GMNIA analysis performed on a numerical parametric model, which was previously validated by laboratory tests. In addition, the results are compared with strength results provided by appropriate Eurocode 3 formulas and AISI Direct Strength Method for global-local interaction and with classic experimental results.
