In the study, presented in this paper, a general approach to the reliability based limit analysis of laterally loaded piles is presented. In engineering practice uncertainties play a very important role. The aim of this study is to evaluate the lateral load capacity of a long pile when plastic limit analysis is considered. In addition to the plastic limit analysis to control the plastic behaviour of the structure, a bound on the complementary strain energy of the residual forces is also applied. This bound has a significant effect for the load parameter. The solution to reliability-based problems is obtained by a computer program which is governed by the reliability index calculation.

Navigation was always important to humankind. Today, it is unimaginable to navigate in the world without the Global Positioning System. Although, the Global Positioning System operates very accurately outdoors but does not in indoor environments. Unfortunately, the indoor navigation is still in its infancy. However, several approaches have been proposed during the last decade but none of them is accurate and/or inexpensive enough for the consumer use. According to the authors' proposal, utilization of a hybrid mesh network might solve the inaccuracy. The mesh technology would offer an accurate, fast, adaptive, self-organizing, self-healing and inexpensive solution for the indoor positioning. A hybrid mesh network would involve some technologies like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, RFID or IQRF. Fortunately, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group announced the mesh capability in the Bluetooth 5 standard in 2017. However, building up a physical network is always expensive experiment, thus simulations would be executed in a OmNET++. In this paper, the implementation possibility of the Bluetooth mesh capabilities will be analyzed.

Modern electric drive systems require more sophisticated monitoring and diagnosis methods for determining the expected life-Time and reliability. Recently, continuous assessment of the electrical condition of electrical machines has become increasingly important. Investigations to predict battery life are of the utmost importance for Electric Vehicles (EVs). The evaluation of the instantaneous State-of-Health (SoH) of the battery cell packs requires a precise measurement system that encompasses the especially important specifications related to the operating conditions. In addition modern Battery Management Systems (BMS) rely on empirical battery models whose parametrization is crucial from the reliability's point of view. The model parameters are necessary to be indentified via the appropriate measurement data. To address these considerations, this paper presents a new test system for Li-ion batteries and control software based on LabView, which is capable of conducting high quality and completely automated battery cell measurements defined by user input test vectors and test suites. The test system allows conducting also real time condition monitoring in Li-ion batteries by discharge impulse responses. Finally several measurements on the experimental setup are performed. Analysis of the measured data validate that the designed device ensures high performance testing and post-processing.

Power in the supply chain: a state-of-the-art literature review and propositions from the perspective of gender differences

Purpose: This paper aims to examine the existing literature on firms’ power through the lens of the supply chain and highlights some gaps that could be covered by future research. Design/methodology/approach: This study uses a systematic framework-based review combining the insights of the antecedents, decisions and outcomes (ADO) and theories, contexts and methods (TCM) frameworks. The review was carried out using a sample of 108 articles published between 1984 and 2022 in 25 prestigious journals. Findings: The ADO framework maps out the state of the art of the antecedents of power (i.e. sources and types of firm power), the decision to use power and the effect that exercising power over other firms may have on firm performance and the quality of inter-firm relationships. In addition, this framework highlights factors that mediate or moderate the decision to exercise power and the factors that mediate or moderate the outcomes of exercising power or power asymmetry. The TCM framework provides insights into the theories, contexts (i.e. countries, industries, level of analysis and sources of data) and methods used by the existing literature. The content analysis using the aforementioned frameworks provides the basis to elaborate propositions for future research on power in the supply chain from the perspective of gender differences. Research limitations/implications: This systematic literature review offers a comprehensive guide for researchers to understand the antecedents, decisions and outcomes of firm power in the supply chain, as well as the TCM used in the literature. The content analysis using frameworks provides a road map to investigate the proposed factors that might moderate the decision to exercise power and the outcome of exercising power or power asymmetry from the perspective of gender differences. In addition, based on content analysis, the authors make propositions about TCM that could be applied in future research. Practical implications: From a practical perspective, this systematic literature review may help managers to better understand the sources and consequences of their firm’s power. This would allow managers to make better decisions when negotiating with their supply chain parties, which could potentially lead to better performance for their firms and the whole supply chain. Originality/value: To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to conduct a comprehensive systematic literature review of the different dimensions of firms’ power in the supply chain.

It is well known that in engineering practice high stresses occur and that these stresses depend on the shapes and the loads of the bodies in unilateral contact. The stress distribution is often not smooth and has some singularities, thereby decreasing the lifetime of the machine elements. It is an important objective to obtain a smooth stress distribution when optimizing the shape of the elements. One of the goals of this paper is to present a method that resolves the above problem. By controlling the contact pressure a prescribed, smooth contact-pressure distribution can be achieved. The optimization problems take into account the limit stress constraints of the material. In the present paper two types of contact problems are investigated. Firstly, contact optimization problems are analyzed assuming linear elasticity and small displacements, including steady-state wear process. Two numerical examples are presented on this topic for a rolling machine element: a punch optimization and a shape optimization. We also investigated which parameter values of the controlling function result in the maximum loadability. This can be useful in the design of brakes or bearings. In the second part of the paper the solution of the contact problem for large displacements and deformations is investigated where an air-spring is analyzed by calculating the nonlinear load-displacement curve and comparing it with measurements. © 2007 Journal of Mechanical Engineering. Digital innovation in family businesses in the post-pandemic period: A case study

Businesses must develop appropriate organizational structures and working models to reduce costs and increase profitability. Under the conditions of rapid change, innovation and creativity are critical for business success. Traditional hierarchical and rigid organizational structures are unsuitable for the flexible working conditions of the post-pandemic period and need to be revised to adapt to newly created requirements. This study aims to answer the fundamental question of the importance of digital innovation for businesses in the postpandemic period. A qualitative research method was the basis for this case study. Data were collected from 15 family business managers operating in Sakarya (Turkey) through semi-structured interviews. The collected data were analyzed using the qualitative content analysis technique in the MAXQDA program. According to research findings, developing new organizational structures and business models based on digital innovation is necessary to ensure sustainability and cope with uncertainty in family businesses. This also supports the notion that organizational structures should adhere to organic and flexible arrangements and move away from rigid and mechanical systems.

From Genotype to Functional Risk: A Multi-Omic Approach to Predicting Thiopurine and Methotrexate Co-Therapy-Induced Liver Injury

The combination of thiopurine and methotrexate (MTX) is a standard co-therapy regimen for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Despite its efficacy, this regimen is constrained by a narrow therapeutic window and considerable inter-individual variability, which heightens the risk of drug-induced liver injury (DILI). MTX-induced metabolic strain further destabilizes cytokine-sensitive thiopurine detoxification pathways during systemic inflammation. Conventional pharmacogenetic (PGx) testing for TPMT and NUDT15 variants is effective in predicting myelosuppression, but often fails to detect hepatotoxicity as an adverse effect, suggesting a clinically significant genotype-phenotype difference. This review examines the molecular determinants of DILI, emphasizing the role of secondary metabolic pathways and transporter dynamics as key modulators of risk. The study describes cytokine-mediated (IL-6, TNF-α) transcriptional suppression of cytochrome P450 enzymes and hepatic transporters (SLCO1B1, ABCC2/4) not merely as secondary modulators, but as the primary determinants of localized, tissue-specific drug exposure through disrupted nuclear receptor signaling (PXR, CAR, HNF4α). This mechanism promotes functional phenoconversion and toxic molecular shunting, leading to increased intrahepatic drug exposure. It synthesizes the current knowledge on the metabolism of thiopurine and MTX, focusing on the genetic and non-genetic factors influencing toxicity and their interactions. The review also critically evaluates the limitations of static PGx-guided dosing. It highlights the need for comprehensive, real-time risk assessment that integrates gene-environment interactions, multi-omics data, and clinical monitoring to improve precision therapy for ALL. This approach combines extended PGx profiling, transcriptomic monitoring, and clinical biomarker assessment to provide a transformative strategy for precision drug delivery.

FEM-based benchmark problem for cogging torque minimization of axial flux permanent-magnet motors in Artap framework

Optimization of axial flux permanent-magnet motors is a very important topic in the literature and requires high performance optimization algorithms and finite element analysis. This paper gives a summary of the analysis methods of axial flux permanent-magnet motors currently available in the literature. An open-circuit model was built and described using the 2D Linear Motor Modeling Approach. The model was validated by comparing air-gap flux-density waveform and cogging torque results with one of the motors described in the literature as a benchmark problem. The aim of the study was to create a method for the axial-flux motor optimization based on the open-circuit finite element model using the Artap software. By applying the described method, it is possible to use local and global optimization algorithms, such as evolutionary and genetic algorithms, directly using the finite element analysis results. The proposed finite element model can be used for benchmarking and selecting the most appropriate evolutionary and genetic algorithms for this kind of optimization problems.

Out-of-plane behaviour of imperfect beam-column with sinusoidally corrugated web

This paper presents an analytical formula for the second-order normal stresses in flanges of the imperfect I beam-columns with sinusoidal web corrugation. To deduce the analytical expression, the beam is separated into three parts. The flanges are modelled as thin-walled beam-columns and the corrugated web is modelled as a thin equivalent orthotropic plate with uniform thickness. The indispensable elastic critical loads are derived from the total potential strain energy of the imperfect beam-column using an energy method. To assess the accuracy of the proposed analytical formula, full shell finite element models were created in Abaqus software. The result of the benchmark example showed that the derived expression is accurate and applicable for geometrically nonlinear analysis of beam-columns with sinusoidal web corrugation. Based on the proposed analytical expression, the Ayrton-Perry type solutions for corrugated web columns and beams are also presented in this paper.
