Anti-inflammatory activity of melampyrum barbatum and isolation of iridoid and flavonoid compounds

Description:

Melampyrum barbatum Waldst. & Kit. Ex Willd. (Scrophulariaceae) has been used in traditional medicine for the treatment of rheumatic complaints and different skin diseases. In the course of our study the anti-inflammatory activity of the aerial parts of M. Barbatum was evaluated. A MeOH extract was prepared and consecutively partitioned with CHCl3, EtOAc and n-BuOH. The fractions were assayed in in vivo carrageenan-induced rat paw oedema model. The intraperitoneally administered n-BuOH phase exerted marked inhibitory effect (33.6 %, p < 0.01). Multistep chromatographic separation afforded mussaenoside and aucubine from n-BuOH fraction. Moreover, 8-epiloganin, loganic acid and mussaenoside were obtained from EtOAc fraction and apigenin, luteolin, benzoic acid and galactitol from CHCl3 fraction. These data validate the ethnomedicinal use of M. Barbatum for the treatment of inflammatory diseases and reveal that iridoids and flavonoids could be responsible for the anti-inflammatory effect of this species.

Nowadays the customer loads use power supplies built with semiconductors, switching power supplies, power controlling systems, etc. These loads cause non-sinusoidal current in power lines, energy quality and EMC problems. The method of Power Factor measurement is described in this article, which is a good KPI in these cases.

The global shift toward renewable energy is driven by the dual imperatives of rising energy demand and the need to reduce environmental harm caused by fossil fuels. However, renewables like wind and solar power pose unique challenges, particularly due to their intermittent generation and current limitations in energy storage technologies. Battery banks, commonly used to store surplus energy, degrade over time, making accurate forecasting of their remaining usable lifecycles critical for maintaining system reliability and efficiency. This study proposes a novel approach for forecasting battery health using an optimized long short-term memory (LSTM) network. To address the complexity of deep learning hyperparameter selection, a modified metaheuristic optimization algorithm is developed and integrated into a broader optimization framework aimed at improving model performance while minimizing overfitting. The method is benchmarked against several state-of-the-art optimizers, with results validated through comprehensive simulations and statistical analysis. This work contributes a scalable forecasting methodology, an effective optimization strategy, and interpretable results to support sustainable energy storage solutions.

Road safety is a serious concern worldwide, and traffic signs play a critical role in confirming road safety, particularly in the context of AVs. Therefore, there is a need for ongoing advancements in traffic sign evaluation methodologies. This paper comprehensively analyzes the relationship between traffic sign retroreflectivity and LiDAR intensity to enhance visibility and communication on road networks. Using Python 3.10 programming and statistical techniques, we thoroughly analyzed handheld retroreflectivity coefficients alongside LiDAR intensity data from two LiDAR configurations: 2LRLiDAR and 1CLiDAR systems. The study focused specifically on RA1 and RA2 traffic sign classes, exploring correlations between retroreflectivity and intensity and identifying factors that may impact their performance. Our findings reveal variations in retroreflectivity compliance rates among different sign categories and color compositions, emphasizing the necessity for targeted interventions in sign design and production processes. Additionally, we observed distinct patterns in LiDAR intensity distributions, indicating the potential of LiDAR technology for assessing sign visibility. However, the limited correlations between retroreflectivity and LiDAR intensity underscore the need for further investigation and standardization efforts. This study provides valuable insights into optimizing traffic sign effectiveness, ultimately contributing to improved road safety conditions.

The effect of complex bacterial treatment of slurry on content and ecotoxicological properties

The subject of our research is the comparative ecotoxicological examination of the bacterial slurry treatment system distributed by NCH Magyarorszag Kft. The experiment was carried out on a cattle calf rearing farm, in the 0-6 months age group section. The bacterial strains available in tablet form were multiplied in a container and added weekly to the slurry collected in the shaft. The purpose of bacteria treatment was to promote homogenization of the manure, reduce odors, and break down organic impurities. The ecotoxicological tests were carried out before, during and after the manure treatment at three sampling times. As a result of our research, it has been revealed that during the slurry treatment, the internal content values increased significantly, mostly the nitrogen forms, the biological oxygen demand and the dry matter content. The presence of the estrogenic effect remained considerable even at the end of the treatment. Based on the phytotoxicity test, the fertilizer treatment had a positive effect on the stem and root growth of each plant. The results of the soil toxicity test proved that untreated slurry loses its inhibitory effect on the vital activity of sensitive bacteria at higher dilutions. The common duckweed test revealed that above 150 dilution, the inhibitory effect of the slurry ceases in the samples at all three sampling times. In order to inhibit the growth of algae, the liquid fertilizer showed a stagnant-inhibiting tendency during the treatment. Based on our results, we came to the conclusion that the bacterial slurry treatment system was effective in terms of homogeneity, deodorization and decomposition of organic matter. However, it is recommended to apply it to the fields at a higher dilution rate or with a high soil water content. Further studies are needed regarding the removal of substances with hormonal effects, based on which recommendations can be developed for farmers.

Validation of the overall stability design methods (OSDM) for tapered members

Two new stability design methods are demonstrated and validated: the Overall Strength Reduction Method (OSRM) and the Overall Imperfection Method (OIM). Both methods are based on the linear buckling analysis (LBA) of global structural models and use the standard reduction curves. The OSRM is formulated in the classic way using generalized slenderness and reduction factors while the OIM uses equivalent amplitude for the buckling mode based geometrical imperfection. These new design methods cover all types of buckling modes, which can be calculated by LBA of structural models composed of tapered members with arbitrary support conditions and subjected to any complex loading. This paper clarifies the mechanical interpretation and proper calculation of all the components of the two methods in case of tapered members with arbitrary support conditions. The validation is performed on GMNIA results for several different buckling situations of tapered members proving the accuracy of the OSDM.

Analyzing Barriers to Internet of Things (IoT) Adoption in Humanitarian Logistics: An ISM–DEMATEL Approach

Background: Effective humanitarian logistics (HL) is essential in disaster response. The “Internet of Things” (IoT) holds potential to enhance the efficiency and efficacy of HL, yet adoption is slowed by numerous barriers. Methods: This study employs interpretive structural modeling (ISM) and decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) to explore and classify barriers to IoT integration in HL. Results: A total of 12 barriers were identified, classified, and ranked according to their driving power and dependence. Key barriers include lack of standardization, organizational resistance, data quality issues, and legal challenges. Conclusions: Overcoming these barriers could significantly improve relief operations, reduce errors, and enhance decision-making processes in HL. This investigation is the first of its kind into IoT barriers in HL, laying the groundwork for further research and providing valuable insights for HL managers.

Foam Injection Molding of Poly(Lactic Acid) with Azodicarbonamide-Based Chemical Blowing Agent †

In this study, poly(lactic acid) (PLA)-based biopolymer foams were prepared through injection molding using the high-pressure foam injection molding method, also referred to as “breathing mold” technique, with the addition of various amounts (0, 1, 2, and 4 wt.%) of azodicarbonamide-based chemical blowing agent (CBA). The prepared samples were analyzed for their macrostructure using computed tomography (CT) while the mechanical properties were determined by flexural and Charpy impact tests. CT analysis revealed a finer foam cell structure and decreasing shell thickness with increasing CBA content. Regarding the mechanical properties, the specific flexural strength and flexural modulus of PLA were improved as a result of foaming; however, this improvement came at the cost of a slight deterioration in impact strength.
