A central notion behind the field of cognitive infocommunications is that entangled sets of human and ICT capabilities, created through the co-evolution of humans together with ICT, can be conceptually represented and analyzed as new 'cognitive entities'. This term, along with the concept of generation CE (in analogy with the generations X, Y and Z), has been recently introduced to characterize such entangled relationships in terms of functionally relevant units, and to describe the effects that such entangled relationships are having on the personal and social development of the new generation growing up today. In this paper, we make the case that a better understanding of cognitive-social-technological phenomena can be obtained when viewed through the lens of such concepts.

Review of DC Motor Modeling and Linear Control: Theory with Laboratory Tests

This review paper introduces the modeling, measurement, identification and control of direct current motors based on the state space modeling and the transfer function representation. These models are identified by real laboratory measurements, and the simulated results are compared with the measurements. Continuous-time and discrete-time PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controllers, discrete-time state feedback and linear quadratic controllers are designed mathematically. The designed controllers are realized by the microcontroller Arduino UNO, and the behavior of the controllers is compared and analyzed. The noisy current signal has been measured by a discrete-time observer, steady-state Kalman filtering is also studied. The practical results of the implemented controllers support the theoretical results very well.

This paper focuses on the use of modeling and simulation for the renewable energy. An energy storage system for improving performance of electric vehicles is presented. The supercapacitor contributes to the rapid energy recovery associated with regenerative braking in electric vehicles. This power system allows the acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle with minimal loss of energy. Short-distance passenger traffic on electrified lines is a domain where brake energy recuperation might reduce the total energy consumption significantly. In this paper the results of a simulation model by Matlab for an urban-metro railcar is presented.

Analysis of a numerical method developed for estimation of the heat transfer coefficient obtained during quenching

A numerical method for prediction of the Heat Transfer Coefficient (HTC) obtained during quenching is described in this paper. An iterative regularization algorithm is used to solve the inverse problem under study. The unknown HTC function is approximated by polynomial functions of surface temperature. The numerical method developed is verified by using the temperature data measured with a JIS silver probe.

Selection of tool materials for cold forming operations using a computerized decision support system

A computerized decision support system (DSS) is outlined which is designated primarily to selcct the proper tool steel grades for various cold forming operations. This computerized system contains four data base: data base of cold forming operations and tools, of work materials, of cold forming tool materials and of wear resistant PVD coatings. The decision strategy makes it possible to select appropriate tool materials taking into consideration their most important material properties (wear resistance, toughness, compressive yield strength, tempering resistance, dimensional stability, machinability, and material price). The practical advantages of the developed decision support system are demonstrated on example.

Nanotechnology-based thermal insulation materials have appeared in building industry in the last two decades. Among them thermal insulating coatings consisted of vacuum-hollow nano-ceramic microspheres are the subjects of most professional discussion. Most studies about these coatings focus only on examination of thermodynamic properties, because there is still no consensus in academic circles about thermodynamic processes inside nano-ceramic coatings. These professional discussions distract attention from other unknown but also important material properties, like behavior by contact with moisture. This paper summarizes the results of moisture behavior tests with nano-ceramic thermal insulation coatings which were conducted to determine the time trend of water absorption, as well as volume, mass and thermal insulation quality changes caused by increasing moisture content. Analyzing the results mathematical connections were found to describe the relation between water content, dimensional and thermal conductivity changes.

Structural engineers assess the geotechnical problems as difficult to model, complicated to calculate and full of crude approximations. In return, clear constraints hindering the practical use of advanced mechanical theories and computational software decrease the interest of geotechnicians in studying and applying them. In designing complex structures both sides restrict themselves in many cases to the exchange or prescription of some data given on interfaces. The paper presents an overviewon differences either loosing their importance or remaining significant between these structural and geotechnical perspectives. Educational consequences related to the Bologna-process are discussed. Role of case studies and understanding of the observational method's importance are stressed. The paper concludes that geotechnical education should and could correspond to the challenges with more conscious and better structured curricula. © 2008 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

This paper describes how the rapid and detailed modelling and simulation methods can be used to increase the efficiency of mixed simulation projects initiated to support the design of interconnected ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and BP (Business Process) systems. A system of cooperating rapid and detailed methods for critical and non- critical parts of systems is introduced in the phase of preliminary and detailed modelling. The method of translation of information of conceptual models that had been built prior to simulation is described, too. New methods using rapid models to model the ICT and BP systems functioning as environment for the detailed models are presented. A novel method for preliminary modelling based only on cooperating system of rapid models is described. © 2008 EUROSIS-ETI.

Organizing the prevention of trachoma in Hungary (1884-1903)

In Hungary preventative measures against trachoma began in the winter of 1883-1884. Initially based on the recently issued public health law, it was imbedded in a general prevention programme against various epidemics. Local authorities and municipal boards were made responsible for carrying it out. These authorities and boards were obliged to organize supervision, to establish medical offices and ophthalmological wards and to take charge of the continuity of treatments. The public health department, however, faced serious difficulties, since most of the communities did not have the financial resources for such provision nor did they have enough trained physicians. Since the spread of trachoma could not be stopped by these measures, a new and effective solution had to be found. A new article was created for this purpose, the so called fifth article of the year 1886 "On preventing the spread of trachoma", which placed the burden of expenses for treatment - in case of lack of means - on the state budget. The government set up specialized professional training and the ophthalmological hospital system became specialized and modernised with the establishment of special trachoma hospitals, or--in public hospitals--ophthalmological wards. Although the first preventative measures were taken during the period mentioned above, the disease itself persisted, still occurring in large numbers of cases as late as the end of the Second World War.
