StoLPaN, a pan-European consortium of companies, universities and user groups co-funded by the European Commission (EU), Information Society Technologies (IST) Programme aims to define open commercial and technical frameworks for the remote management of NFC-enabled (NFC: Near Field Communication) services on mobile devices. These frameworks will facilitate the deployment of NFC-enabled mobile applications across a wide range of vertical markets, regardless of the phone type and the nature of the services required. This paper introduces the application opportunities of the NFC technology, the business aspects of the NFC based service development and the technical infrastructure implementing the core of the NFC-enabled services.

In this paper we introduce new, bacterial evolutionary algorithm (BEA) based methods for routing unicast and multicast demands in grooming capable multi-layer optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks. The methods introduced are compared with both well known heuristic methods, accumulative shortest path heuristic (ASP) and minimum path heuristic (MPH), and as well as with ILP. We prove the strength of our approach by comprehensive simulations in our versatile simulator.

A logic model for inference chains in expert systems

Description:

This paper deals with the calculations performed in the reasoning process of rule-based expert systems, where inference chains are applied. It presents a logic model for representing the rules and the rule base of a given system. Also, the fact base of the same expert system is involved in the logic model. The proposed equivalent representation manifests itself in a logic network. After that, a four-valued logic algebra is introduced. This algebra is used for the calculations where forward chaining is carried out. Next, the notion of line-value justification is described. This operation is applied in the backward chaining process, also on the base of the previously introduced four-valued logic. The paper describes two exact algorithms which serve for the forward and backward chaining processes. These algorithms make it possible to be implemented by a computer program, resulting in an efficient inference engine of an expert system. The achieved result enhances the reliability and usability of the intelligent software systems which is extremely important in embedded environments.

Biomechanical Investigation of Lower Limbs during Slope Transformation Running with Different Longitudinal Bending Stiffness Shoes

Background: During city running or marathon races, shifts in level ground and up-and-down slopes are regularly encountered, resulting in changes in lower limb biomechanics. The longitudinal bending stiffness of the running shoe affects the running performance. Purpose: This research aimed to investigate the biomechanical changes in the lower limbs when transitioning from level ground to an uphill slope under different longitudinal bending stiffness (LBS) levels in running shoes. Methods: Fifteen male amateur runners were recruited and tested while wearing three different LBS running shoes. The participants were asked to pass the force platform with their right foot at a speed of 3.3 m/s ± 0.2. Kinematics data and GRFs were collected synchronously. Each participant completed and recorded ten successful experiments per pair of shoes. Results: The range of motion in the sagittal of the knee joint was reduced with the increase in the longitudinal bending stiffness. Positive work was increased in the sagittal plane of the ankle joint and reduced in the keen joint. The negative work of the knee joint increased in the sagittal plane. The positive work of the metatarsophalangeal joint in the sagittal plane increased. Conclusion: Transitioning from running on a level surface to running uphill, while wearing running shoes with high LBS, could lead to improved efficiency in lower limb function. However, the higher LBS of running shoes increases the energy absorption of the knee joint, potentially increasing the risk of knee injuries. Thus, amateurs should choose running shoes with optimal stiffness when running.

The multilayer perceptron is an artificial neural network that learns nonlinear function mappings. Nonlinear functions can be represented by multilayer perceptrons with units that use nonlinear activation functions. The neurons in the multilayer perceptron networks typically employ sigmoidal activation function. The next state of the J-K fuzzy flipflops (F3) using Fodor, Yager and Dombi operators present S-shaped characteristics. An interesting aspect of F3-s might be that they have a certain convergent behavior when one of their inputs (e.g. J) is exited repeatedly. If J is considered the equivalent of the traditional input of a neuron (with an adder unit applied before J), K might play a secondary modifier's role, or can just be set fix. The paper proposes the investigation of such possible F3-networks as new alternative types of neural networks.

Computation of sensitivity of periodically excited dynamical systems

In the optimization of continuous-time dynamical systems, it can be important to numerically calculate the parametric sensitivity of some long-time-averaged quantities in the system. These computations are challenging for typical numerical methods in the presence of oscillations, which can originate from the internal structure of an autonomous dynamical system or be caused by an external periodic excitation. The case of periodic excitation is motivated by the problem of heat conduction in mechanical parts in engines, where the mean strength of the heat fluctuation can be an important parameter in the engineering design. In this work, approaches to transform periodically excited systems into autonomous systems appropriate for sensitivity analysis were investigated. The least-squares shadowing method is used to compute the sensitivities, and the effect of different kinds of transformation compared. The resulting numerical method is presented using the motivating example of heat conduction.

Reducing Train Delays with Machine Learning-Based Predictive Maintenance for Railways

The railway network constitutes a vital component of public transportation in many countries, serving millions of passengers and transporting significant volumes of freight. Nevertheless, a persistent challenge within this system is the frequent occurrence of train delays, which arise from diverse causes and result in financial losses, passenger dissatisfaction, and diminished trust among users. Consequently, enhancing operational efficiency and minimising delays has become a central objective for transportation planners and policymakers. In addressing this issue, the present study applies machine learning algorithms (MLAs), specifically multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural networks and the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), to predict potential defects in railway vehicles and improve maintenance and repair strategies within the Iranian railway network. The findings reveal that ANFIS achieves superior predictive accuracy. Building on this, a mathematical model in combination with the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm was developed to optimise train allocation across stations and generate schedules aimed at reducing delays. The employed algorithms proved to be highly effective for predictive maintenance and repair of railway vehicles, ultimately contributing to delay reduction within the railway system.
