Today, the automotive industry is undergoing rapid change. While manufacturers are constantly switching to fully or semi-electric hybrid models, the weight of the vehicles also increases significantly due to the extra weight of the batteries. Since the weight of vehicles has the most significant influence on their consumption and, with it, harmful emissions (even indirectly far from the place of use), manufacturers strive to keep weight under control with continuous improvements. One of the main directions of the developments is the use of new light but at the same time heavy-duty materials with a wide variety of material combinations. These new material pairings pose challenges to knitting technology solutions, which need to be developed similarly. In the course of our research, we are investigating how the surface properties can be optimized in the case of steel with increased strength for the automotive industry, without additional added material and changes visible to the naked eye. We subject the examined DP600 material to a short-pulse laser beam treatment, and we manage to change the surface structure so that the interface properties measured by wetting are significantly improved. The results are confirmed by electron microscopic examinations.

A Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis Framework to Explore Determinants of Catastrophic Healthcare Expenses

Despite significant advances in the medical sciences, out-of-pocket (OOP) healthcare costs have remained a concern, especially for lower-middle-class and poor people. The current study aims to investigate the critical factors that notably contribute to catastrophic healthcare expenses (CHCEs). To this end, the ongoing research is conducted through two phases. The first phase aims to identify the key determinants of CHCEs through expert and household evaluations. A multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) framework using the FullEX method is developed to analyze expert and household opinions. In the second phase, the experts investigate the hierarchical relationships among key determinants. Interpretive structural modeling (ISM) and MICMAC analysis are carried out to examine the structural relationships among the determinants. The findings of the FullEX analysis reveal that experts and households are in consensus. It is found that low-income level, number of dependable members, frequent birth rate, high child mortality, and lack of job security and risk pooling mechanisms notably contribute to the higher CHCEs. The ISM analysis indicates the strong driving power of income, education, and job security, leading to disparities in rural economic conditions, reflecting the need for holistic development. The MICMAC analysis confirms the hierarchical relationships among the key determinants of CHCEs. The findings necessitate formulating an inclusive strategy to reduce financial distress and improve the healthcare outlook for rural households, leading to sustainable development.

Developments in healthcare usually directly target innovations in intervention techniques and medical devices for diagnosis, analysis and treatment. On the other hand, digital development in administration, handling and accessing (sensitive) patient data or real-time availability of information also contribute to improvement of management. The CoVid situation highlighted emerging technologies that covers both, and blurs the border between, management (i.e., cost reduction) and actual treatment. The newly introduced 5G New Radio wireless technology and the expansion of virtual, augmented and mixed reality applications not only assist medical personnel during treatment, but can increase safety, availability and sustainability of services, and at the same time, can reduce costs. This paper briefly introduces benefits of these technologies focusing on state-of-the-art use cases.

Performance comparison of polymer and fiber modified asphalt mixtures

The performance of SBS-modified asphalt mixtures can be enhanced by incorporating various types of fibers offering a cost-effective alternative to increasing the SBS content. In this study, three different fibers, Basalt, Polyester, and Lignin fibers were added to a 3% SBS-modified bitumen binder, and their performance was compared to a 7% SBS mixture without fibers. Laboratory tests, including indirect tensile strength and dynamic shear rheometer tests, were used to evaluate the mixtures. The indirect tensile strength of all samples was assessed at loading rates ranging from 10 to 70 MPa/s, while stiffness moduli were tested at frequencies of 5 Hz, 3.5 Hz, 1.9 Hz, and 1.2 Hz. Finite element simulations using the Burger’s Logit model have been performed and microstrain analysis has been carried out to assess rutting and fatigue damage, complementing the experimental results. The findings demonstrated that fiber-modified mixtures exhibited superior performance, with increased tensile strength and complex shear modulus. Among the fiber types, Basalt fiber showed the best results, outperforming the others, while Polyester and Lignin fibers displayed nearly identical performance. The Basalt fiber mixture outperformed the SBS-7% mixture by 25% in rutting resistance and 28% in fatigue damage.

Displacement measurement by digital holographic interferometry

Digital holographic interferometry is a useful technique for measuring the deformation or displacement of the surface of an object by recording at least two speckle patterns, one before and one after the object is deformed. Holographic interferometry utilizes interference between the speckled image of an object illuminated by a laser and a reference beam derived from the same laser. Any change in the shape of the object results in local changes in the intensity distribution in the holographic fringe pattern. The holograms are generated directly on a charge coupled device (CCD) target and stored electronically. The speckle patterns can be taken quickly and analyzed using holographic interferometry and the Fourier transform method. © Civil-Comp Press, 2011.

Topology free structure of scanning electron microscopy images of heat treated, metallized compound semiconductor surfaces are studied using structural entropy based analysis. The scale dependence and the possible superstructures are determined by wavelet transforming the images before the localization type detection. In the PhD dissertation [6] optimization models were developed for the pavement management system, which could help planning the optimal maintenance work. This model can be generalized for those engineering structures, where there are several types of structures and for each structure there are many components with many different types of deterioration options and duty uses. The condition of application is: the deterioration of certain components not only depends on time, but on the extent of use. In this paper we would like to present the development of Engineering Structures Management System, the different models, and furthermore a practical application the deterioration model of car parts and the planning of their maintenance. © 2011 IEEE.

Role of land use, green energy, and water resources for food accessibility: Evidence from emerging economies in the lens of COP28

In the era of COP28, where most of the developed and developing economies concentrate more on the development of environmentally friendly energy resources to tackle the issue of climate change. Nevertheless, the literature lacks appropriate evidence regarding the influences of green energy and other resources on food security. This study analyses the influences of land use, green energy, and water resources on food accessibility in emerging economies, while also considering the important roles of natural resources, research and development (R&D) expenditure, and economic growth during 1980–2020. Due to non-linear data dispersion, the novel moments quantile regression is employed. Results assert that land use has a positive significant influence on food accessibility in the presence of water resources and a weaker negative impact in the presence of natural resources. Natural and water resources are detrimental to food accessibility in the Emerging Seven (E7) countries. Furthermore, R&D expenditure and green energy positively (negatively), while economic growth negatively (positively) impacted food accessibility in the presence of natural resources (water resources). The results are robust and validate causal inferences that help develop appropriate policies for emerging economies concerning food accessibility or security. In this rapidly evolving era, most empirical studies consider environmental quality. Conversely, this study contributes to the literature by examining the factors influencing food accessibility, as this issue is of considerable importance because of the rapidly growing global population.

The proliferation of 5G technology requires the installation of new radio frequency equipment (antennas, base stations) next to the existing 4G network elements. New frequency bands have been allocated and opened for 5G services in the lower and higher GHz bands. Due to the lack of reliable and conclusive experiments and the uncontrolled spread of false information via media and social networks on the internet, a never seen before resistance has arisen from the public. Although many papers have recently been published suggesting adverse health effects, most of them were inadequately designed, conducted, and evaluated in order to be conclusive. Nevertheless, there is a need for proper experiments. This paper highlights current results, emerging critics, and presents a recommendation for further investigation.
