Introduction of a New Variable and the Problem of Complexity in Determining Impact Speeds in Vehicle–Pedestrian Accidents

Description:

Reconstruction and analysis of road traffic accidents represent an inherently complex task. This is especially true for one of the most significant accident categories, vehicle-pedestrian collisions. Forensic traffic and vehicle technical experts must determine the relevant impact speeds in virtually all cases, based on a wide variety of objective traces. The most relevant evidence and information can be obtained on-site within a limited period following the occurrence of the accident. These indispensable sources of information cannot be reproduced later or can only be reproduced to a very minimal extent. Therefore, it is essential to uncover as many traces at the accident site as possible and as soon as possible. In certain cases, the so-called rapid expert calculations may need to be performed on-site. In this paper, we seek solutions related to these rapid calculations and to facilitating the determination of speeds that play a critical role in vehicle-pedestrian accidents. The proposed approach may simplify the daily work of forensic traffic and vehicle technical experts.

Development opportunities for mobile and ICT learning in teacher education

Learning is nowadays a continuous intellectual readiness to be able to cope with the current needs of the world of work. Students’ knowledge must be adapted accordingly and they must be capable of continuous development throughout their lives [8]. Changes in teaching-learning habits have already been observed at the beginning of the 21st century and those involved in education need to adapt to these changes with the appropriate transition to digital education what is more important today than ever be-fore. We asked our teacher-candidate students in an online questionnaire at the beginning and at the end of the “Teaching Methods in Mathematics” course. Our non-representative survey provided valuable data for course de-velopment. The aim of the survey was to find out students’ perceptions of the methods and tools they had learned in education. In the questionnaire at the beginning of the semester, we inquired our students about the types of work and methods they were familiar with, and then they gave their opinions about the different ICT tools, educational programmes and applications and how they were used. At the end of the semester, we interwieved them again whether they still held similar views on the subject or they had managed to change their views during the course.

Validation Process of the Computer Simulation of a Test-Purpose Self-Driving Vehicle

The aim of this article is to propose the initial validation steps for a test-purpose self-driving vehicle. The basis of the computer simulation in question is a passenger vehicle converted to be capable of specific self-driving tasks, meaning that it features a complete low-level control system, an onboard computer for high-level computation and a full sensor set consisting of laser scanners, lidars, cameras and GNSS receivers. The computer simulation of the described vehicle is created using the SVL Autonomous Vehicle Simulator and aims to completely model the behavior of the real transformed vehicle. To ensure the fidelity of the computer simulation, a set of comparative measurements are defined, which are realized using both the real vehicle and its computer simulation. The basis of comparison is, on one hand, the assessment of the vehicle control system by comparing control input and output, on the other hand, the comparison of onboard sensor measurement results.

Ethical leadership and organizational resilience: exploring the interconnected dynamics

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide insights into the mechanisms through which ethical leadership impacts organizational resilience and fill the gap in the existing literature that has largely studied the two variables in isolation. Design/methodology/approach This study uses a systematic literature review, using peer-reviewed articles focused on ethical leadership and organizational resilience published between 2018 and 2024. This study uses databases like Scopus, Google Scholar and Web of Science and keywords including “ethical leadership,” “organizational resilience” and their intersections. Findings The findings of this study are based on the review of 14 selected papers. The review found that ethical leadership significantly enhances organizational resilience by nurturing organizational culture (organizational learning culture, ethical culture, ethical reporting, system thinking and ethical climate), promoting organizational flexibility (ability to adapt and ability to innovate) and positively impacting human capital (employee ethical conduct, trust, readiness to change, citizenship behavior, creativity and commitment). Key findings indicate that ethical leaders influence the organizational culture, supporting resilience strategies. Research limitations/implications This study’s limitations include a limited literature search, restricted to certain databases and peer-reviewed articles in English. The focus on studies conducted between 2018 and 2024 and the methodological diversity of the studies further limited the ability to draw overall conclusions. Originality/value This study’s originality lies in the lack of studies explicitly linking ethical leadership and organizational resilience. Most studies implicitly suggest that ethical leadership promotes organizational resilience through isolated mediating factors. This study contributes to advancing theoretical mechanisms through which ethical leaders impact resilience and suggests practical applications in organizations that want to achieve sustainability in turbulent times.

Optimal Elasto-Plastic Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Structures under Residual Plastic Deformation Limitations

In this study, an investigation regarding optimal elastic-plastic analysis method of different reinforced concrete (RC) structures is held by applying the residual plastic deformations limitations on the steel bars inside the reinforced concrete. Where different structures, including simple beam and slab, are selected as benchmarks and modelled numerically using ABAQUS in order to calibrate their experimental behaviour according to laboratory tests. Furthermore, concrete damage plasticity (CDP) constitutive model was applied to represent concrete behaviour in the numerical models considered. Then, an objective function was established for optimizing the applied plastic loads for each structure where the process of controlling plastic deformations was carried out by applying constraints on the complementary strain energy of the residual internal forces initiated inside the steel bars. This methodology was applied by authors by writing MATLAB code and linking it with ABAQUS to determine the corresponding applied plastic load for each entered complementary strain energy. Generally, applying optimization problem for each model showed that the complementary strain energy of the residual forces reflects the general behaviour of the structures and may be assumed as a constraint controlling the plastic behaviour of the structures whereas the obtained results indicated how structures acted differently when possessing different complementary strain energy values turning from elastic into elasto-plastic condition and then reaching plastic state.

Methodology and Realization of Indoor Pass-by Noise measurement for passenger cars

Nowadays the protection of human life is extremely important, and for this purpose the vehicles must go through a homologation process before the introduction to market. If we look at the acoustical requirements, one of the most important test procedures is the Pass-by Noise (PBN) measurement, which defines the noise emission limit value, when the observer stands beside the vehicle passing him by. There are two versions: Exterior (or Outdoor) and Indoor (or In-room) Pass-by Noise (IPBN) measurement. Former is presently the only accepted method for homologation; however, environmental and weather conditions could strongly influence its feasibility. For this reason, IPBN got into focus, with better suitability for development purposes and the prospect, that it will be accepted later for the homologation process too. This paper focuses on the IPBN method: gives an overview on the setup and presents the details of a realized test-measurement campaign. Beside the 2 most important points: the measuring room and the position of the sensors, the measurement devices, vehicle location and connection to measurement system, the measuring program and the whole process are presented together with some preliminary results related to different characteristics of the vehicle.

Increasing Navigation Safety by Introducing the Modern DunaInfoControl Control System

The study presents a development proposal coordinated by the Hungarian Academy of Engineering (MMA) for intelligent navigation management on the Danube. We analyse the introduction of a security-enhancing central control system based on the IDM model. The publication reviews the main issues related to navigation safety in Hungary. Without claiming to be exhaustive, in the field of water transport control theory and practical applications, important players include HUN-REN SZTAKI, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Széchenyi István University, HungaroControl Zrt. and the Water Police. This development requires combining modern control theory and a high-capacity 5G network. The program proposes the implementation of intelligent control in the first phase in the Budapest area, between river km 1660 in the north and river km 1633 in the south. This is because accidents much larger than the "Hableány" boat tragedy that occurred in Budapest on the evening of May 29, 2019, at 9:05 p.m., may occur in this section in the future. Consider, for example, the appearance of convoys transporting 6000-8000 tons of dangerous goods on the Danube. These represent a very serious source of danger in the event of collisions with the Budapest bridge piers. The proposal also intends to support the RSOE river IT system (developed by NOVOFER Zrt.), which has been built and operating since the end of 2018.

The impact of irrigation with harvested rainwater containing asbestos cement matrix on the germination characteristics of Solanum lycopersicum

The study aims to investigate how the transfer of matrix materials from eroded asbestos cement products induces stress responses in plants. The paper evaluates the exposure and risk factors of plants, water, and soil to asbestos cement materials. Additionally, the experimental results provide empirical evidence for plant stress responses based on physiological and germination parameters. Contamination of irrigation water with asbestos cement raises environmental concerns due to its potential toxicity to plants and soil quality. Asbestos in irrigation water can lead to toxic stress for plants, affecting germination processes and growth. The paper analyzes the effects of preset doses of irrigation water containing asbestos cement matrix on the germination process and physiological parameters of Solanum lycopersicum in a controlled experiment setting. This research proposes methodological developments that could be valuable for environmental plant protection professionals.

Digital data (protection) Security - A contestable and fair digital market ecosystem

The topicality of the thesis is given by the new interoperability provisions of the recently enacted legislation on contestable and fair markets. In interpreting the role of interoperability, the study takes as a conceptual starting point the ability of different IT-based systems to work together, bearing in mind that in digital markets interoperability is a direct economic determinant of interoperability between platforms and third-party access. Gatekeepers as digital platforms have become a dominant phenomenon in our world, which may be extremely heterogeneous, but almost without exception they can be identified as having a number of interdependent technological, economic and social dimensions of coordination. It is true that the last few decades have seen the recurrence of legal issues relating to the management of data, but these are primarily constitutional approaches in the context of the individual's right to self-determination. Furthermore, it is a fact that enforcement and regulation have not kept pace with the development of extreme market concentration, nor with the achievement of transparency or accountability. The thesis takes a novel approach in several respects. On the one hand, it takes a power approach to the new world of digital sovereignty that has emerged in the last decade, and on the other hand, it uses the latest findings in systems theory and data science to present a specific approach that, in the current state of technological development, self-determination is no longer necessarily adequate to protect our data. We all have to come to grips with the idea that our data, traces of our behaviour, have become an asset that may be being processed and analysed by someone, somewhere. That does not make privacy 'dead' as many people think - it is simply that the focus may be on the rules for handling personal data rather than protecting it.
