Halal food supply chains: A literature review of sustainable measures and future research directions

Introduction. Although sustainability represents a high-profile topic in supply chain management, it remains an unexplored research area for Halal food supply chains (HFSCs). Hence, to bridge this knowledge gap, we conducted a systematic literature review to identify the measures necessary for the development of sustainable HFSCs and potential research gaps at the nexus of sustainability and Halal food literature. Study objects and methods. We carefully analyzed forty (40) papers selected from leading, highly-ranked journals to answer the following research question: “What are the measures necessary for the development of sustainable Halal food supply chains?” Results and discussion. The findings revealed that the improvement of Halal processes through the implementation of quality management systems, the effectiveness of Halal labeling, and the use of technology could enhance the economic performance of HFSCs. Furthermore, HFSC’s sustainability efforts are strengthened by enhancing trust and transparency benefitting human resource skills development, promoting animal welfare issues, and increasing regulatory compliance. The implementation of environmental protection measures is a primary driving factor for environmental sustainability activities. Environmental sustainability could be fostered by a shift to the application of greening practices and the support of environmentalism in the Halal food industry. Conclusion. The findings of this study provide critical managerial implications for Halal food practitioners as they can have a summary of the previous studies and thus use it as a benchmark for introducing sustainable measures in their Halal food firms.

The Effects of Preprocessing on Colorectal Polyp Detecting by Fuzzy Algorithm

In the following study the effects of two image preprocessing methods, namely Gaussian filtering and Wiener filtering, is studied on the results of a fuzzy inference method previously developed by the authors, for determining whether a colonoscopy picture segment contains any colorectal polyp. As earlier results show that less blurry, less compressed and less noisy images tend to be better classifiable, the effects of noise suppression with a Gaussian filter, which makes the images also blurrier, was beneficial on noisy, compressed images, and rather maleficent in good quality pictures. The effects of the Wiener filter, which both decreases noise and enhances edges, did not really manifest in classification improvement.

Hungary's University of Public Service and Brill Publishers (Leiden, Holland) staged a joint online event on 3 May 2021 about the reactions of Parliaments as traditional institutions to the fast-changing political, social and economic environment of our age. The conference was occasioned by the launch of the International Journal of Parliamentary Studies. Timed to coincide with the Day of Parliament, the scientific event also commemorated the inaugural session of Hungary's first freely elected Parliament on 2 May 1990. The conference was moderated by Zsolt Szabó, the new journal's chief editor, as well as associate professor at the University of Public Service and the Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church.

Cavitation measurement in a centrifugal pump

Description:

One of the causes of centrifugal pump instability lies in the phenomenon of cavitation. Cavitation in the centrifugal pump can produce undesirable effects such as deterioration in hydraulic performance. In order to prevent the emergence of cavitation, it is required to know the onset point of the cavitation, in the pump. Our study presents the process and result of the cavitation measurement performed on a centrifugal pump in a closed loop test system. In this study, we applied CFD analysis, which serves as a means of measuring flow in the impeller of the centrifugal pump. The results gained from CFD analysis correspond, approximately, to the measured results.

Impact of financial technologies on economic development: Theories, methods and analysis

This research focuses on an analytical review of the scientific literature to select appropriate methods and evaluate the impact of financial technologies on economic growth. Since non-cash payments can be affected by various factors, there is a great variety of studies relating to them in the scientific literature. However, existing scientific papers reflecting on the economic growth and non-cash payments do not determine the cause-effect relationship trends in different periods. Current study intends to fill this gap. Using an original method based on correlation analysis, the relationship of indicators in different periods is calculated with the use of the SPSS software. The data is collected for period of 2004-2019, during which the reviewed countries were actively developing and increasing their financial and technological capacities. Analysis results largely indicate an increase in the number of bank branches in many of the reviewed countries. Further, we consider the correlation between economic growth (expressed by indicators such as GDP), financial technologies (number of ATMs, user access to internet, and number of users of mobile communications) and gender indicators. The conclusions show a correlation between economic growth and financial technologies.

The knowledge of a vehicle's center of gravity (COG) and moment of inertia (MOI) are important from vehicle dynamic and comfort points of view. These parameters can be determined from the CAD model of the vehicle, however, manufacturing inaccuracies and additional elements can modify the values, and experimental validation can be necessary. The determination of COG (and even MOI) can be carried out using classical physical methods, but a more convenient and sophisticated method is offered based on dynamic testing data. The method is known and accessible even in commercial testing software, but a clear recommendation for the optimal input data and the expected accuracy is still not available. The purpose of this study is to define the influencing factors of the measurement and quantify their effect. The introduced method is based on the evaluation of the frequency response functions in the mass-line region. Input data were obtained by using impulse hammer excitation and accelerometers for measuring the response of the structure. The measurements and the evaluations were performed in Siemens LMS Test.Lab software using Rigid Body Calculator module. The results of the dynamic measurement are compared to CAD data and to the COG value got from simple static measurement.

Investigation of frequency dependent mechanical properties of porous materials using dynamic mechanical analyzer and frequency-temperature superposition theory

In acoustic design of engineering applications - such as in the acoustic analysis of passenger vehicles - poroelastic materials are of great importance. One of the most influencing properties in determining their noise-reduction potential is the storage modulus. The purpose of this study is to examine the frequency dependence of storage modulus of selected porous acoustic materials at least up to 1000 Hz. This is executed by using the combined use of dynamic mechanical analyzer and frequency-temperature superposition theory. All other methods for measuring the storage modulus fall short in determining frequency-dependence above 100 Hz: quasi-static mechanical analyzer is mostly used for determining an averaged constant value deduced from low-frequency measurements, while the usage of an electromagnetic shaker capable for high-frequency excitation may include effects of fluid motion inside the pores, thus significantly modifying the results. Frequency-temperature superposition enables to determine the storage modulus values in a wide frequency range, based on low-frequency measurements, where fluid-structure interaction is negligible. It was found that the modulus varied significantly up to and beyond 1000 Hz, and thus, acoustical characterization of these materials can be significantly improved using the proposed method. The work concludes with recommendations to improve the accuracy of the results.

Are Halal Food Supply Chains Sustainable: A Review And Bibliometric Analysis

Halal food supply chains (HFSCs) are increasingly characterized by fragmentation, complexity, and uncertainty. Halal food consumers are becoming more demanding for food quality and compliance with Islamic dietary law. As sustainability is a multidimensional concept that entails several aspects and interpretations, the objectives of HFSCs significantly overlap with the sustainable dimensions of the food ecosystem. The purpose of this study is to examine the inherent sustainable aspects and characteristics of HFSCs. Therefore, a systematic literature review and a bibliometric analysis were conducted to redress the lack of academic attention being given to the relationships of HFSCs with sustainability. Selected 74 papers were coded and analyzed according to the dimensions of sustainability, namely, the economic, social, and environmental dimensions. The review primarily attempts to provide answers to the following research question: What are the sustainable aspects of HFSCs? We provide a comprehensive analysis of the three critical components of sustainability, offering a broad and comprehensive picture of many critical issues in HFSCs. Finally, the contribution of the study, the scope of future research, and the limitations are highlighted in detail.

INVESTIGATION OF THE GLUED INSULATED RAIL JOINTS APPLIED TO CWR TRACKS

This article summarizes the research results related to our own conducted extensive laboratory tests of polymer composite and steel fishplated glued insulated rail joints (GIRJs), namely axial tensile tests as well as vertical static and dynamic tests. The investigation dealt with the examination of GIRJs assembled with steel and special glass-fiber reinforced plastic (polymer composite) fishplates, both of them for CWR railway tracks (i.e. so-called gapless tracks or, in other words, railway tracks with continuously welded rails). The exact rail joint types were MTH-P and MTH-AP, consistently. The MTH P types have been commonly applied for many years in the CWR tracks in Europe, mainly in Hungary. The MTH-AP rail joints consist of fishplates that are produced by the APATECH factory (Russia). They are made of a fiberglass-amplified polymer composite material at high pressure and controlled temperature. This solution can eliminate electrical fishplate lock and early fatigue failures just as it can ensure adequate electrical insulation. The advantage of such rail joints can be that they are probably able to ensure the substitution of the glued insulated rail joints with relatively expensive steel fishplates currently applied by railway companies, e.g. Hungarian State Railways (MÁV). The aim of the mentioned research summarized in this paper is to formulate recommendations on technical applicability and on the technological instructions that are useful in everyday railway operation practice on the basis of the measurements and tests carried out on rail joints in laboratory.
