Finite element analysis of bridge transition zone for investigating the effect of moving loads

The problem of track-bridge interaction and its modeling issues have increasingly been emphasized and highlighted due to the presence of high-speed rails. The quality criteria for high-speed rail lines must be stricter than those for conventional rail lines to assure passenger comfort and safety. Experience shows that in transition zones when a train rides from an embankment onto a stiff structure, such as a bridge, tunnel or culvert, an abrupt change occurs in the support stiffness possibly inducing differential settlements. Examples prove that inadequate technical solutions can generate damage that may require long term speed restrictions or lead to short maintenance cycles, significantly increasing the total cost of ownership. The problems associated with the transition zones require complex analysis. The author reports the results obtained by the investigation of a 3D numerical model of a bridge transition zone by means of an advanced constitutive model and time domain analysis. The mechanical behavior of a railway bridge and its soil environment is presented in the study with special regards to factors like train speed, embankment height and the settlement differences apparently developing in the transition zone.

Description:

The importance of human factors, in road design and traffic safety, has been increasing recently. As part of the human-centered design, schemata, as mental representations, induce road user expectations, as well as, trigger behavioral patterns. In road design this concept is called “self-explaining roads”, meaning that road users automatically drive according to an expected behavior and speed. This requires different categories of roads, each with homogenous characteristics and a notable difference between them. This paper investigates how many unique categories road users are able to recognize.

Carotenoid quantification of Cucurbita spp. by spectrophotometry, high-performance liquid chromatography and photoacoustics

Background. Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) is a tool for the rapid and non-destructive identification of materials even without contact. In recent years, there have been several works concerning the applicability of PAS in food analytical measurements. The intention of this work is to identify whether there is a correlation between total carotenoid and the β-carotene content of pumpkin and squash measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), spectrophotometry (SP) and PAS. Material and methods. 'Crown prince F1', 'Veenas F1', 'Atlas F1' and 'Apollo F1' (SAKATA) were used as experimental materials. The samples were measured in a fresh state and in a lyophilised condition with HPLC, SP and PAS. Results. The results of SP show that total carotene content varies according to the species and variety. Lyophilisation resulted in lower, although varying carotene content compared to the raw form. Typical PA spectra of pumpkins were determined (300-550 nm), normalized to the carbon black powder. At 17 Hz the amplitude and carotene content shows direct proportionality in the range investigated. Photoacoustic (PA) signal and carotenoid content of pumpkin samples gave a linear correlation (R2 = 0.9821). Conclusion. The measurement of PA spectra gives reliable information about the total carotene content of pumpkin and squash samples. These findings may allow the use of PAS as a fast tool for the carotenoid determination in squashes and give the possibility of instead for the results to be used for the evaluation of squash varieties currently used for industrial processing in functional food development.

Characteristics of community supported agriculture in the western transdanubia region

Both industrialization of agriculture and globalization of food trade have begun in the 20th century. Consumer habits have also undergone major changes in line with altered processes in the structure of food trade initiating merits as well as drawbacks. For instance, currently small-scale agriculture or local product supporting consumption is increasingly forced to play a marginal role all over the world. Small farmers are underrepresented in most traded venue, while production is shifting towards bigger market participants. Locally, this means that the volume of production, labour requirements and diversity of products will be reduced, consequently local characteristics will slowly disappear. As an essential requirement for such production the traditional knowledge will not be able to be passed down to forthcoming generations. As a result of a survey, a problem and an objective tree of community supported agriculture was created. These problem/target trees were constructed after an analysis of CSA through a scrutiny of several farmer's organization and individual consumers in the Western Transdanubia region of Hungary. Followed by the evaluation of data the most influential factor, the basic problem was determined, as a consequence of which the long-term, strategic objective in terms of the market power of CSA organizations has been set forth.

The latest wave of connected digital systems, nowadays called Internet of Things (IoT) promises various gains, especially in terms of significant ease of data access. A large number of different platforms for IoT applications, however, makes their development difficult and time-consuming leading to projects that are failed to be on time, on budget or fully completed. To address the platform heterogeneity, this paper presents the ongoing work on development environment called Orcc-IoT. Orcc-IoT facilitates the development of IoT by combining dataflow modelling language, heterogeneous code generator and the library of ready-made IoT actors. The utilisation of Orcc-IoT in development is expected to increase the quality, and to reduce the development costs and time-to-market of IoT applications.

Driving in dynamically changing traffic is a highly challenging task for autonomous vehicles, especially in crowded urban roadways. The Artificial Intelligence (AI) system of a driverless car must be able to arbitrate between different driving strategies in order to properly plan the car’s path, based on an understandable traffic scene model. In this paper, an AI behavior arbitration algorithm for Autonomous Driving (AD) is proposed. The method, coined AIBA (AI Behavior Arbitration), has been developed in two stages: (i) human driving scene description and understanding and (ii) formal modelling. The description of the scene is achieved by mimicking a human cognition model, while the modelling part is based on a formal representation which approximates the human driver understanding process. The advantage of the formal representation is that the functional safety of the system can be analytically inferred. The performance of the algorithm has been evaluated in Virtual Test Drive (VTD), a comprehensive traffic simulator, and in GridSim, a vehicle kinematics engine for prototypes.

The unitized loads are the major form of the packed product transportation, and most of the cases the packages are fixed to the pallet with straps, stretch film or these combinations. During transport, various vibrations occur in the packaging-product system, which can damage the products. Many of studies focus on the nature of these vibrations, but the vibration varies between the layers of stacked packaging is not fully researched. This paper focuses on the different motion of the layers in the unitized loads in function of the fixing mode to the pallet. Therefore, multiple unitized loads were built from the same corrugated paper boxes in three layers with various fixing mode, to measure each layer motion during vibration. To carry out the simulation procedure, acceleration on each layer was recorded under sine and random vibration simulation. The recorded data shows, which layer motion is the most disparate from the excited motion, which fixing variant caused this difference.
