Tutorial: Speech assessment for multilingual children who do not speak the same language(s) as the speech-language pathologist

Purpose: The aim of this tutorial is to support speech language pathologists (SLPs) undertaking assessments of multilingual children with suspected speech sound disorders, particularly children who speak languages that are not shared with their SLP. Method: The tutorial was written by the International Expert Panel on Multilingual Children’s Speech, which comprises 46 researchers (SLPs, linguists, phoneticians, and speech scientists) who have worked in 43 countries and used 27 languages in professional practice. Seventeen panel members met for a 1-day workshop to identify key points for inclusion in the tutorial, 26 panel members contributed to writing this tutorial, and 34 members contributed to revising this tutorial online (some members contributed tomore than 1 task). Results: This tutorial draws on international research evidence and professional expertise to provide a comprehensive overview of working with multilingual children with suspected speech sound disorders. This overview addresses referral, case history, assessment, analysis, diagnosis, and goal setting and the SLP’s cultural competence and preparation for working with interpreters and multicultural support workers and dealing with organizational and government barriers to and facilitators of culturally competent practice. Conclusion: The issues raised in this tutorial are applied in a hypothetical case study of an English-speaking SLP’s assessment of a multilingual Cantonese-and English-speaking 4-year-old boy. What are cultural metaphors?

One of the central issues in metaphor research is the interrelation of metaphors and cultural experience (Gibbs 2017; Kövecses 2005a, 2015; Sharifian 2011). As part of that research agenda, the notion of cultural metaphor has become one of the major categories of cultural linguistics (Sharifian 2011, to appear). The multidisciplinary theoretical framework interprets cultural metaphors within the set of cultural conceptualisations whose common trait is that they are rooted in a system of values and principles characteristic of a community. The aim of this paper is to outline the notion of cultural metaphor, and present its most important characteristics and dimensions of study in a cultural linguistic framework. First, its close connection is introduced with cultural schemas (including emotional schemas and event schemas) and cultural categories, and then it is argued that individual cultural metaphors cannot be taken to be elaborations of a more generic conceptual metaphor (Kövecses 2005ab). Next, it is discussed how source domains and target domains can be brought to bear on cultural cognition. Finally, metaphor preference (Benczes & Ságvári to appear) is discussed as an instance, broadly construed, of cultural metaphors. It is argued that, albeit cultural metaphors are of a conceptual nature, their conceptual structure is largely determined by cultural experience, hence their analysis primarily targets experiences and suppositions that make them culturally decisive. The theoretical claims of the paper are illustrated by cultural metaphors taken from Hungarian folk songs, along with examples borrowed from the relevant literature (Yu 2017; Yu-Jia 2016).

Intelligent decision technologies can support travelling as well as planning transport systems. Trip makers have to choose between transport modes and then plan the optimal route which depends on many factors e.g. journey time, walking distances, transfers, waiting times, price of the journey as well as the individual preferences of the trip maker. This paper gives an overview of decisions in both individual and public transport. Then it shows some examples how intelligent cognitive info-communications can support these decisions and how they can be built into passenger information services.

This paper focuses on auditory sensory substitution for providing visually impaired users with suitable information in both static scene recognition and dynamic obstacle avoidance. We introduce three different sonification models together with three temporal presentation schemes, i.e. ways of temporally organizing the sonic events in order to provide suitable information. Following an overview of the motivation and challenges behind each of the solutions, we describe their implementation and an evaluation of their relative strengths and weaknesses based on a set of experiments conducted in a virtual environment.

Since there’s a race for customers on the market of the consumer goods, cities of the 21st century compete for the inhabitants, tourists, investors and companies. In this competition the image and good reputation of the city, their conscious framing is one of the biggest feats of arms. The economy of the dynamically developing city, Győr is based after several system changes on the automobile industry. Its main leg is the important international company with headquarter in Győr since 1993, the Audi Hungaria Zrt. (AH). As results of the research analysing the marketing communicational print and film tools of the company and the city, the author tried to figure out, how the AH and the city interact in their corporate communication, in their reputation.

Forecasting travel time reliability in Urban road transport

Assessment of travel time reliability as a fundamental factor in travel behaviour has become a very important aspect in both transport modelling and economic appraisal. Improved reliability could provide a significant economic benefit if it is adequately calculated in cost-benefit analyses for which the theoretical background has already been set. However, methods to forecast travel time reliability as well as travel behaviour models including its effects are rather scarce and there is a need for development in this field. Another important aspect could be the influencing factor of reliability in travel demand management and related policy-making. Therefore, this paper intends to further analyse reliability focusing exclusively on urban road transport based on automatic measurements of journey times and traffic volumes from a dataset of the city of Budapest. The main finding and the novelty of the study is a model which can forecast the standard deviation of travel times based on the volume-capacity ratio and the free-flow travel time. The paper also provides a real-life numerical experiment in which the proposed model has been compared with other, existing ones. It proves that besides existing mean-delay-based models, travel time reliability can be forecasted based on the volume-capacity ratio with an adequate accuracy.

Application of self-organizing maps for technological support of droplet epitaxy

The subject of this paper is the self-organized grouping of droplet epitaxial III-V-based nano-structures. For the nano-structure grouping, our developed algorithm - called Quantum Structure Analyzer 1.0 - is used. The operation of this software is based on the principles of the Kohonen Self-Organizing Network. Here, three possibilities for nano-structured groupings are shown. On one hand, we examine the classification of nanostructures with Kohonen Self-Organizing Maps, on the other hand, fuzzy inference systems are applied for the same goal. In the case of the fuzzy methods two approaches are examined in detail. According to the first fuzzy inference approach, the shape factor is calculated from the size of nanostructures. According to the second fuzzy inference approach, the shape factor calculation is based on the controllable parameters of the growth process (eg. pressure and the temperature of the substrate).

Green supply chain awareness in the hungarian automotive industry

The integration of the disciplines of both the green operation and the complex supply chain (including purchasing, production and logistics) came into focus in the 1990s. In the literature review the focus of the researchers of this cross-sectional field was the automotive industry. It seems obvious that these closely-knit systems with high OEM dominance will offer more concrete results: it is difficult to resist when a given OEM starts to involve its first-, second- and third tier suppliers into its environmental schemes and processes. The Hungarian automotive sector can be characterized as somewhat one-sided: it consists of by few large international OEM’s (Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Opel, Suzuki, Raba), but by a large number of small-medium enterprises as 3rd (or even 4th!) tier suppliers. The aim of the paper was to find out whether companies acting as a member of more advanced chains show also better results in their “green” supply-chain-behavior. As a study description, in our empirical research, we have created a toolkit, and examined whether companies, which are using more sophisticated inter-organizational cooperation-tools, are more environmentally cautious, and if yes to what extent. As a result, discussion it can be stated that companies with a higher developed traditional Supply Chain have also a more developed green supply chain management system.
