Path planning for mobile robots by bacterial memetic algorithm

Publication Date: 2011-08-12

Volume: Unknown

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 107-112

Description:

The goal of the path planning problem is to determine an optimal collision-free path between a start and a target point for a mobile robot in an environment surrounded by obstacles. This problem belongs to the group of hard optimization problems which can be approached by modern optimization techniques such as evolutionary algorithms. In this paper the bacterial memetic algorithm is proposed for path planning of a mobile robot. The representation used in the paper fits well to the algorithm. Memetic algorithms combine evolutionary algorithms with local search heuristics in order to speed up the evolutionary process. The bacterial memetic algorithm applies the bacterial operators instead of the genetic algorithm's crossover and mutation operator. One advantage of these operators is that they easily can handle individuals with different length. The proposed algorithm is tested in real environment. © 2011 IEEE.

Remarks to the topological characterization of cellular systems

Publication Name: Journal of Geometry and Physics

Publication Date: 2011-08-01

Volume: 61

Issue: 8

Page Range: 1476-1478

Description:

In this note we discuss and solve an open problem (a conjecture) posed in a paper "On the combinatorial characterization of quasicrystals" published earlier in the Journal of Geometry and Physics. The conjecture proved is valid for the majority of space filling cellular systems (polycrystals, nanotubes, and fullerenes). © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

Price convergence in the EU in general and in the Central, Eastern and Southern European EU member states in particular

Publication Name: Society and Economy

Publication Date: 2011-08-01

Volume: 33

Issue: 2

Page Range: 387-397

Description:

The subject of the paper is the analysis of price convergence in the European Union in general and in the Central and Eastern European member states in particular. The first part of the paper is an overview of the relevant literature on price convergence serving as the theoretical foundation of the subsequent empirical analyses on comparative price levels. The second part discusses sigma convergence in the EU-27 including the old (EU-15) and the new (EU-12) member states, as well as within the Economic and Monetary Union. Conditional (weak) beta convergence in the EU-12 is also analyzed. The first conclusion of the paper is that a rather strong relationship exists between sigma convergence and the process of economic integration, more precisely between sigma convergence and the establishment of the individual stages of regional economic associations. The second conclusion is that price convergence is not a secular process; it may be impeded or accelerated by a great number of micro and macroeconomic factors.

Sustainability assurance and internal auditing in emerging markets

Publication Name: Corporate Governance

Publication Date: 2011-08-01

Volume: 11

Issue: 4

Page Range: 475-488

Description:

Purpose: Despite the increasing recognition that organizations should report on relevant sustainability matters, the importance and value to stakeholders of these reports being independently assured are not well appreciated. The objective of the paper is to underline that such assurance can be (and is) provided by the internal audit function and, in doing so, that function makes a significant contribution to effective corporate governance. Design/methodology/approach: Theoretical in nature, the paper makes reference to a few "real-world" illustrations. It is review in character and in a relatively systematic manner reviews key internal auditing professional standards-guidance in conjunction with prior theoretical and empirical research. Findings: The paper reinforces the argument that reporting of sustainability policies, practices and measures, without independent assurance, is of reduced value to stakeholders. The paper provides evidence to show how, despite the potential to do so, internal auditing has not always been promoted globally in this role. Research limitations/implications: The paper is limited to a theoretical consideration. There is potential for it to be enhanced by further empirical research demonstrating the value of independent internal auditing within sustainability programs and reporting. Originality/value: The paper is possibly the first to make explicit the linkage between the reporting of sustainability and the assurance of such reports. It should help make boards of organizations in emerging markets more aware of internal audit in relation to sustainability in terms of corporate responsibility and governance. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Modeling of radial magnetic bearing by finite element method

Publication Name: Pollack Periodica

Publication Date: 2011-08-01

Volume: 6

Issue: 2

Page Range: 13-24

Description:

The paper presents the numerical modeling of a Y-shaped three-pole radial magnetic bearing based on two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) magnetic field computation with nonlinear model of the material. The used numerical method is the Finite Element Method (FEM). The nonlinear system of equations according to the nonlinear characteristics of ferromagnetic material can be handled by the Newton-Raphson technique and by the fixed-point method.

Sensitivity calculation of LF RFID transponder coil by the mutual effective permeability method

Publication Name: Pollack Periodica

Publication Date: 2011-08-01

Volume: 6

Issue: 2

Page Range: 3-12

Description:

Sensitivity is the most important parameter of the Transponder coils from the performance point of view. Due to the open magnetic circuit constructions analytic formulas are not available and not applicable to calculate the sensitivity. Analogically to the self-inductance effective permeability a similar effective permeability can be introduced for the mutual inductance, as well. The presented sensitivity calculation method is based on the mutual effective permeability. By the presented method, the sensitivity of inductors with arbitrary shape and permeability materials can be calculated with good accuracy.

Regional statistics in confined two-dimensional decaying turbulence

Publication Name: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A Mathematical Physical and Engineering Sciences

Publication Date: 2011-06-28

Volume: 369

Issue: 1945

Page Range: 2555-2564

Description:

Two-dimensional decaying turbulence in a square container has been simulated using the lattice Boltzmann method. The probability density function (PDF) of the vorticity and the particle distribution functions have been determined at various regions of the domain. It is shown that, after the initial stage of decay, the regional area averaged enstrophy fluctuates strongly around a mean value in time. The ratio of the regional mean and the overall enstrophies increases monotonously with increasing distance from the wall. This function shows a similar shape to the axial mean velocity profile of turbulent channel flows. The PDF of the vorticity peaks at zero and is nearly symmetric considering the statistics in the overall domain. Approaching the wall, the PDFs become skewed owing to the boundary layer. © 2011 The Royal Society.

Publication Date: 2011-06-17

Issue:

Page Range: 297-302

Description:

In the framework of the paper an improved method for image resolution enhancement is introduced. The enhancement is performed through another representation domain, where the image function is expressed with the help of polylinear functions on higher order singular value decomposition (HOSVD) basis. The paper gives a detailed description on how to determine the polylinear functions corresponding to an image and how to process them in order to obtain a higher resolution image. Furthermore, the proposed approach and the Fourier-based approach will be compared from the point of view of their effectiveness.
