Formation control of a large group of UAVs with safe path planning and obstacle avoidance

In this article we propose a hierarchical control structure for multi-agent systems. The main objective is to perform formation change manoeuvres, with guaranteed safe distance between each two vehicles throughout the whole mission, even if motion is restricted to a limited space and static obstacles are present. The key components that ensure safety are a robust control algorithm that is capable of stabilising the group of vehicles in a desired formation and a higher level path generation method that provides all the vehicles with safe paths, based on graph theoretic considerations. The method can efficiently handle a large group of any type of vehicles. As an illustration, the results are applied to a group of 18 quadrotor UAVs, where 2 of the UAVs cannot receive information from the others.

The Effect of Wood Flour Incorporation on the Properties of Injection Molded Poly(Lactic Acid) Products †

Wood flour-paired poly(lactic acid) (PLA)-based biocomposites were fabricated with filler contents of 0, 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 wt.%. The samples were processed through extrusion followed by injection molding. The injection-molded specimens were subjected to tensile tests, impact tests, and water absorption tests. Based on the results, increasing the amount of lignocellulose fibers effectively improved the modulus of PLA from 2.8 to 3.6 GPa at 20 wt.% wood flour loading; however, this came at the cost of strength, which dropped from 55.0 to 48.8 MPa. Additionally, the incorporation of lignocellulose increased the hydrophilicity of the composites, resulting in a threefold increase in water absorption at 10 wt.% filler content. These results provide insight into the effects of embedding lignocellulose fibers into PLA.

This study examines the issues driving the non-adoption of AI-based hearing aids. The gap is critical since, despite increasingly improving technology, particularly with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), the persistent non-adoption raises questions about the technology’s appeal and usefulness. The study uses a qualitative research methodology, collecting data from the study participants through written responses to interview questions. The data was collected from 56 people with hearing impairment and analysed using the grounded theory methodology to identify the barriers. The selective codes, representing the five themes (barriers) that broadly constitute resistance, are (i) technological performance barriers, (ii) financial and functional barriers, (iii) privacy and data security apprehensions, (iv) control and autonomy concerns, and (v) social and health concerns.

Prioritising water-related regional development project ideas based on stakeholder involvement activities: A case study from Szigetköz, Hungary

Szigetköz—a large island of the Danube in Hungary—is attracting a new wave of interest in water-related regional development projects from the public and private sectors alike. The revived interest in the Szigetköz floodplain area, which has historically endured the adverse effects of large-scale water management initiatives, draws attention to the necessity for careful consideration and the active involvement of local stakeholders in the decision-making process. In our research, we conducted various stakeholder engagement activities, including interviews, questionnaires, and workshops. These activities helped define the problems and objectives of each stakeholder group. Through collaborative consultations, we gathered over 100 proposed water related development project ideas. Additionally, to address key issues in project development and selection, we evaluated the integrative potential of each proposed project, considering the number of distinct water management issues it addressed. We also assigned an attitude score to each project, derived from the diverse objectives of various stakeholder groups, and analysed these quantities using a multiple-criteria analysis. This paper details a novel approach to assess and rank the proposed water-related regional development project ideas based on the calculated integrative potential and attitude scores. The goal was to prioritise and further develop these proposed projects to benefit Szigetköz and its surrounding areas. Main results of the study have shown the average project scored between 0.33–0.50 in integrative potential out of a maximum of 1.00 For positive attitude score the average was between 0.28–0.43, out of a maximum of 1.00 while for the negative attitude score the average project scored between -0.14–0.00 out of a minimum of -1.00. The ranking of projects that was based on these scores, highlighted three types of proposed projects that need to be further developed in different ways. The top-ranked positive attitude integrative projects need cost-benefit calculations involving all ecosystem services to justify their economic sustainability. Top-ranked opposing attitude integrative projects need conflict resolution to be socially sustainable. Finally, project ideas that scored low on integrative potential need to be developed to make use of blue-green infrastructure, and circular economical advancements to foster their environmental sustainability.

This paper presents an approach for creating tensor product (TP) models based on sparse or non-uniform samples representing arbitrary datasets, and for manipulating the resulting TP structure to further identify the models behind the datasets. Given the usefulness of TP models in merging together closed algebraic formulae and tensor representations, it is argued that the proposed approach can be applied towards understanding the underlying complexity of a given dataset, while iteratively arriving at a model for the process that generated it. The key idea behind the approach is demonstrated using a dataset on sound pressure levels generated by different-sized airfoils in a wind tunnel.

Numerical Modeling and Optimization of a Quasi-Resonant Inverter-Based Induction Heating Process of a Magnetic Gear

Induction heating is a clear, cheap, and highly effective technology used for many industrial and commercial applications. Generally, a time-varying magnetic field produces the required heat in the workpiece with a specially designed coil. The efficiency of the heating process depends highly on the coil design and the geometrical arrangement. A detailed and accurate finite element analysis of the induction heating process usually needs to resolve a coupled thermoelastic–magnetic problem, whose parameters values depend on the solution of another field. The paper deals with a shrink-fitting process design problem: a gear should be assembled with an axe. The interesting part of this case study is given the prescribed low limits for critical stress, the temperature of the gear material, and the heat-treated wearing surfaces. A coupled finite-element-based model and a genetic algorithm-based parameter determination methodology were presented. A thermal imaging-based measurement validated the presented numerical model and parameter determination task. The results show that the proposed methodology can be used to calibrate and validate the numerical model and optimize an induction heating process.

Sustainability will not be achieved as long as the human race does not realize its perpetual dependence on the environment. Economic prosperity is based on natural capital, "the natural bases of life" that man can not change with impunity. Man has to be aware of the effects of forcing economic growth and the misconception of the endless biophysical environment. The Seventh Environmental Action Programme, the title of which is "Living well within the limits of our planet" is inconsistent in the state of "overshoot"52. The "growth"-with any indicative before-can not be sustainable in a biophysically inherently finite world. "Well-being" is a relative level, and has a different content as a concept according to patterns of values, and is also fundamentally re-evaluated in a crisis situation.

In a special experimental environment a new communication approach is investigated for intelligent cooperation of autonomous mobile robots.
