Factors and Health Effects of Excessive Smartphone Use: The Impact of Bedtime Delay on Young Adults in Developing Countries

This study investigates the factors that lead to smartphone addiction in young adults as well as the negative health effects of this addiction. This study used confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze the data from 430 online questionnaires of young adults aged between 15 and 55. The findings show that the association between smartphone addiction and health hazards is significantly mediated by bedtime procrastination, which links excessive usage of the device to negative mental and physical effects. The findings show that impulsivity, depression, gaming addiction, cyber-loafing, and other behavioral and psychological characteristics all play a major role in smartphone addiction, which has an adverse impact on both mental and physical health. Among the participants, 80% were single and 61.1% were female; these groups had greater rates of addiction and related health issues. The results have significant implications for psychiatrists, psychologists, parents, and anyone concerned about smartphone addiction and its associated health risks. The study highlights the crucial role of bedtime procrastination as a mediator in this context. This material will be particularly beneficial for therapists specializing in treating smartphone addiction in both children and adults.

Evaluation of the Effectiveness of the Dual Career Support System for Athletes: Evidence from Hungary

Athletes do not receive adequate and equal support in building their careers. This study aims to examine the unequal and inconsistent support systems available for the simultaneous development of sporting and educational careers. A purposive sampling method was applied, and data were collected through a self-designed questionnaire survey distributed via Google Forms. The data collected were analysed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows. The findings indicate that in Hungary, support systems are primarily material in nature, and mainly benefit a narrow segment of elite athletes enrolled in higher education. These systems have little or no significant impact on students of secondary school age. Most respondents reported support primarily from their families and their personal coaches. The vast majority of participants had not participated in professional programmes designed to facilitate dual career development. The results provide guidance for the development of competence-based training programmes that promote effective learning and life management skills. Such training should be incorporated into secondary school curricula as a matter of priority.

Sustainable Design of Steel Frames Based on Topological Optimization Considering Geometrical and Material Nonlinearities

This research introduces a sustainable approach to designing steel frames, specifically focusing on the topological optimization of I-beam webs. The proposed methodology incorporates the plastic behavior of structural steel and considers geometric nonlinearity. The primary objective of the study is to provide an environmentally sustainable design that achieves maximum material efficiency. To accomplish this goal, the bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization (BESO) approach is employed. Four different beam-column setups, each featuring various beam web formations, were validated according to previous experimental tests. Based on the results, topology optimization was conducted, considering the volume fraction corresponding to the different web openings. Subsequently, the structural behavior in terms of stress intensity of the optimized and conventional configurations was compared. Subsequently, during the final stage, the volume fraction was reduced to 60%, and the performance of the resulting setup was examined. The results of this research demonstrate the efficiency of topology optimization and suggest that this technique has the potential to reduce the material quantity required for producing steel structures while achieving better performance in terms of stress levels, thus providing an environmentally sustainable design.

Smart Cities and Data Enrichment: The Role of LiDAR and Point Cloud Upsampling in Sustainable Urban Management

Geospatial data with high resolution and spatio-temporal accuracy can further support sustainable infrastructure and optimise urban services to improve the quality of life of city residents. LiDAR-based technologies are commonly used to produce 3D urban models and can include terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), mobile mapping systems (MMS), and airborne platforms such as photogrammetric drones. Point cloud datasets can be utilised for transportation planning and management, utility management, green infrastructure evaluation, and emergency response. Despite the utility of these point cloud datasets, the intrinsic incompleteness or sparsity due to the costs of surveying, the characteristics of the sensors, and environmental occlusion are significant limitations for effective precision modelling at the urban scale. Point cloud upsampling appears to be an innovative modelling gap for synthetically increasing point density, while preserving geometric accuracy. Deep learning–based networks demonstrably reduced the quantified improvements of the point cloud upsampling method. Previous studies have shown that reduced point-to-surface deviation from ~0.146 to ~0.140 (10-2 scale; 6.11 % improvement), and improved distribution uniformity from 0.315 to 0.219 (30.55 % improvement), and frequency-selective geometry upsampling provided up to 4.4×s less point-to-point compared to PU-Net and at 4× upsampling factors These results demonstrate that advanced point cloud upsampling methods would reasonable improve the accuracy or precision of derived products such as digital terrain models (DTMs), canopy height models (CHMs), and other ecological indices that are generally sensitive to point density. This paper reviews the latest upsampling algorithms and proposes a way of thinking and structuring data science that can scale into urban monitoring processes.

Equivalence of MCDM Methods and Synthesis of Solution Based on Ratings Obtained in Different Models

Synthesis of solutions based on a set of models is a modern trend in the field of multi-criteria choice. It is assumed that a solution based on many methods increases the reliability of the decisions made. One of the important tasks is to select an independent set of models. Comparison of various multi-criteria methods is performed using two lists: rank and rating. To compare the rating of alternatives obtained using different MCDM models, the article uses the Relative Performance Indicator (RPI). Using RPI, six identical methods for aggregating private attributes of alternatives are established: Weighted Sum Model (WSM), Ratio System approach (RS), Multi-Attributive Border Approximation area Comparison (MABAC), Technique for Order Performance by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) with L1 metric, Multi Atributive Ideal-Real Comparative Analysis (MAIRCA) and Ranking of Alternatives with Weights of Criterion (RAWEC) provided that each aggregation method combines the same method of linear normalization of attributes. This allows avoiding duplication of equivalent methods in the Multi-Method Model (3M) approach combining different MCDM models. When solving MCDM problems, it is recommended to use the simplest and most easily interpreted of them: WSM. The presented methodology is recommended as mandatory for the analysis of new or hybrid MCDM methods to eliminate duplication of existing methods. A synthesis of a solution based on ratings obtained in different MCDM models within the 3M approach is proposed. The method includes coordinating the common goal of several models and bringing the ratings obtained in different MCDM models to a common scale, which allows comparing and aggregating the ratings. The resulting rating is more informative than a rating based on ranks, such as Borda rules or similar, since it reflects the real proportions of the effectiveness of alternatives in different models.

How to Create Organizational Resilience and Adaptability Through Embedded Plasticity-Rigidity Cycles

This paper explores how organizational network structures influence cascading failure propagation and how embedded plasticity–rigidity cycles can create resilience and adaptability. Using real industrial examples from IT-telecom manufacturing, the study demonstrates how small disturbances in highly connected, overly lean (anorexic) supply chains can escalate into large-scale cascading failures, leading to “bulimia states” characterized by simultaneous excesses and shortages. The research introduces the concept of embedded plasticity – the deliberate integration of adaptable nodes and teams at multiple organizational levels – to dissipate disruptions and maintain performance stability. By analyzing typical network motifs such as bi-fans and bi-parallels, the authors identify the structural sources of ambiguity and competition that amplify systemic fragility. The framework includes the design of dual plastic-rigid team structures that align internal dynamics with external fluctuation patterns. These embedded plasticity cycles enable swift adaptation without compromising process quality or productivity. Appropriate levels of plasticity, strategically distributed across organizational sub-networks, are key to ensuring the robustness, flexibility, and continuous learning of complex, interconnected care systems.

Association between hand grip strength and exercise addiction among high-level athletes: differences by sport category and sex in elite athletes

Introduction: Handgrip strength (HGS) is a key indicator of upper-body strength and overall physical fitness. While its links to health and sports performance have been widely studied, its relationship with the risk of exercise addiction (REA) remains unclear. Thus, the present study examines the relationship between HGS and REA across various sports disciplines, sexes, and national contexts, aiming to deepen our understanding of their intricate interplay. Methods: Using a cross-sectional research design, data were collected from 1,211 high-level athletes from Türkiye (n = 656) and Hungary (n = 555), spanning a wide range of competitive sports. The measures involved demographic questions, the Exercise Addiction Inventory to assess REA, and HGS assessments. Results: We found significant negative correlations between HGS and REA among Turkish female athletes competing in racquet and water sports (p < 0.05). In contrast, significant positive correlations emerged in team sports played with hands and target-based sports (p < 0.05). Statistically significant HGS-REA correlations were also observed among Turkish male athletes participating in gymnastics and esthetic sports (p < 0.05). Among Hungarian athletes, a significant HGS-REA correlation was found in male racquet sports athletes and female athletes engaged in combat sports (p < 0.05). Regardless of sports discipline, a statistically significant positive correlation was observed exclusively among Turkish female athletes (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The present study reveals that the correlations between HGS and the risk of REA may vary depending on country, sex, and type of sport. The findings indicate that HGS may be either positively or negatively associated with REA in specific sports disciplines.

Comparative Analysis of Foundation Systems in Expansive Soil: A Three-Dimensional Model Approach to Moisture Diffusion and Volume Changes

This study compares the performance of various foundation systems in expansive soils, such as mats, granular anchor piles, and concrete piles. Expansive soils experience volumetric changes due to moisture fluctuations, which can lead to structural damage. Abaqus software, in conjunction with the SCV approach, is used to analyze soil-foundation interactions. A custom subroutine enhances simulation accuracy by incorporating empirical data on unsaturated clay behavior, matric suction, and variations in effective stress. The method’s accuracy is validated by comparing simulation results to field and laboratory experiments. The findings indicate that increasing the applied load on mats decreases overall heave but increases the differential heave. Additionally, higher soil permeability dereases the differential heave of mats. Granular anchor piles outperform concrete piles by more than 50% in highly expansive soils, suggesting a preference for these foundations. This study provides insights into the behavior of expansive soils, which will assist engineers in designing resilient foundation systems for structures.
