Integrating footwear features into fatigue prediction models for marathon runners: A hybrid CNN-LSTM approach

Publication Name: Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Part P Journal of Sports Engineering and Technology

Publication Date: 2025-01-01

Volume: Unknown

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: Unknown

Description:

Footwear design, especially the curvature of carbon plates, may influence fatigue perception, but few studies have integrated footwear features into fatigue prediction models. This study aimed to develop a hybrid CNN-LSTM model to predict runners’ fatigue states and evaluate the impact of footwear characteristics on fatigue perception. Twelve male marathon runners (age = 21.8 ± 1.3 years; body mass = 59.1 ± 4.1 kg; height = 168.9 ± 2.2 cm; and weekly mileage = 68.8 ± 5.5 km) participated. They wore two types of carbon-plated shoes (flat plate, FP, and curved plate (CP)) and ran at a steady pace (Borg score 13) until a Borg score of 16 or 85% of maximum heart rate was reached for 2 min. EMG signals and physiological data were collected during treadmill running. A hybrid CNN-LSTM model was trained with and without footwear features to predict fatigue states. The model with footwear features achieved 85% accuracy, compared to 69% without. Curved carbon plate (CP) shoes delayed semi-fatigue onset, indicating better initial support, but the time to full fatigue was similar for both shoe types. The CNN-LSTM model effectively predicted fatigue states, with significant improvement when footwear features were included. Footwear design, particularly carbon plate curvature, influenced fatigue perception.

Wheel-Speed-Sensor-Based Spectral Classifier for Road Surface Roughness

Publication Name: IEEE Open Journal of Vehicular Technology

Publication Date: 2026-01-01

Volume: 7

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 829-843

Description:

In this paper, we propose a novel signal processing method for road surface roughness classification exclusively from wheel speed sensor signals. Road surface quality has a significant impact on fuel consumption and driving safety. Traditionally, it has been measured using specially equipped vehicles and, more recently, shared via cloud-based infrastructure; however, such data can be unavailable or quickly become outdated, making onboard solutions essential. We analyzed a large wheel speed sensor dataset from various test maneuvers to determine how road surface roughness influences spectral characteristics under different conditions, including changes in speed, tire pressure, payload, and tire type. The proposed road surface roughness classifier uses only wheel speed sensor signals. It selects signal segments appropriate for processing based on driving conditions and computes their order spectra. The number and relative power of the spectral peaks within the identified interval of interest of the order spectrum are related to road surface roughness. The implemented classifier is capable of distinguishing between rough and smooth road surfaces based on the number of peaks in the interval of interest. The overall accuracy of the implemented road surface roughness classifier was 87.4%.

The possibility of patient-centered dietetic intervention in the context of health literacy in Hungary

Publication Name: Frontiers in Nutrition

Publication Date: 2026-01-01

Volume: 12

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: Unknown

Description:

Introduction: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) accounted for 74% of global deaths in 2024, with over 41 million people dying. The WHO has identified reducing behavioral and metabolic risk factors as a priority intervention. In modern healthcare, patient-centered care plays a key role by addressing individual needs, lifestyles, and motivations, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of prevention and behavior change. Food-based dietary guidelines (FBDG), such as Hungary’s OKOSTÁNYÉR®, are vital in prevention and medical nutrition therapy. However, the effectiveness of such dietary interventions largely depends on individuals’ health literacy. Objectives: This study aimed to explore the relationship between health literacy, dieting habits, dietary counseling, and awareness of the local FBDG recommendations. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in February 2023 on a representative sample (N = 500) of the adult Hungarian population, using the CAWI method. Data were collected with the validated HLS-EU 47-item questionnaire and additional custom items on health status, dieting, and awareness of the local FBDG. Health literacy indexes were calculated using validated thresholds. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, ANOVA, and multivariate regression analyses were applied (p < 0.05). Results: A total of 77.4% of respondents had low (insufficient or problematic) health literacy. Higher education levels and younger age were significantly associated with better health literacy. Chronic diseases were more prevalent in low health literacy groups. About 32.4% of respondents followed a medically indicated diet, and 36.8% had received dietary counseling. Awareness of the local FBDG was relatively low (20.8%), particularly among men and those with lower education. Conclusion: Patient-centered care necessitates a high level of health literacy, enabling patients to actively participate in their therapy. Findings of the study highlight that low health literacy in the Hungarian population poses a major challenge to the success of dietary interventions. Targeted health communication strategies and tailored dietetic support are essential to improve the effectiveness of personalized nutrition care, particularly among vulnerable groups with limited health literacy.

Are Halal Food Supply Chains Sustainable: A Review And Bibliometric Analysis

Publication Name: Journal of Foodservice Business Research

Publication Date: 2021-01-01

Volume: 24

Issue: 5

Page Range: 554-595

Description:

Halal food supply chains (HFSCs) are increasingly characterized by fragmentation, complexity, and uncertainty. Halal food consumers are becoming more demanding for food quality and compliance with Islamic dietary law. As sustainability is a multidimensional concept that entails several aspects and interpretations, the objectives of HFSCs significantly overlap with the sustainable dimensions of the food ecosystem. The purpose of this study is to examine the inherent sustainable aspects and characteristics of HFSCs. Therefore, a systematic literature review and a bibliometric analysis were conducted to redress the lack of academic attention being given to the relationships of HFSCs with sustainability. Selected 74 papers were coded and analyzed according to the dimensions of sustainability, namely, the economic, social, and environmental dimensions. The review primarily attempts to provide answers to the following research question: What are the sustainable aspects of HFSCs? We provide a comprehensive analysis of the three critical components of sustainability, offering a broad and comprehensive picture of many critical issues in HFSCs. Finally, the contribution of the study, the scope of future research, and the limitations are highlighted in detail.

Comparison of ultrasound-assisted extraction and modified QuEChERS technique for extraction of hesperidin from lemon peel (Citrus limon L.) as determined by HPLC

Publication Name: Journal of Food Composition and Analysis

Publication Date: 2025-06-01

Volume: 142

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: Unknown

Description:

Hesperidin (HSP) is a bioflavonoid known for its notable health benefits. Recent extraction strategies have aimed to minimize hazardous solvent use and simplify procedures to improve cost-effectiveness. This study compares ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) with a modified “quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe” (QuEChERS) method for the recovery of HSP. High-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) was used for quantification. The modified QuEChERS method resulted in the highest extraction efficiency while significantly reducing processing time. The validated method demonstrated excellent sensitivity (LOQ: 10.0 µg/mL), high accuracy (recovery >93 %), and good precision (RSD <3.4 %), making it a reliable and cost-effective approach for routine HSP analysis in citrus peel. These findings indicate that the modified QuEChERS technique offers a promising alternative to UAE for the rapid and efficient extraction of HSP.

A Decision Framework for Course Recommendation Using Basic Uncertain Linguistic Information Soft Sets

Publication Name: Decision Making Applications in Management and Engineering

Publication Date: 2025-01-01

Volume: 8

Issue: 2

Page Range: 165-184

Description:

The aim of this paper is to provide fundamental theoretical studies on basic uncertain linguistic information soft set (BULISS). Firstly, the combination of basic uncertain linguistic information and soft set is introduced. Next, set operations and similarity measure on basic uncertain linguistic information soft sets and their properties are discussed. A novel application of basic uncertain linguistic information soft set to multi-criteria group decision making is put forward, in which the similarity measure between any two BULISSs is developed. A group decision algorithm by utilizing traditional decision procedure of soft set theory (or fuzzy soft set theory) and optimization method is given. Finally, a case study relating to curriculum recommendation is shown to illustrate feasibility and validity of the developed group decision making approach.
