Publication Name: Decision Making Applications in Management and Engineering

Publication Date: 2025-04-01

Volume: 8

Issue: 1

Page Range: 22-41

Description:

The "Make or Buy" decision and the supplier selection are critical steps for the efficient operation of companies' supply chains. Safety and security are paramount considerations, especially in industries like logistics, where supply chains are vulnerable to external threats and disruptions. In this scientific article, we present a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted supplier selection method that significantly enhances the safety and security of suppliers. During our research project, we have created an expert system and a corresponding knowledge base with the relevant rules to support supply chain decision-makers in selecting logistics service providers for warehousing services. The foundation of the AI-assisted supplier selection method is advanced data analytics and the application of expert systems, enabling companies to evaluate potential suppliers in detail from a safety and security perspective. The applied expert systems can identify potential risks and make predictions about supplier performance in the future. In the turbulent environment of the global supply chain, selecting long-term partners like warehousing services providers is critical for the success of the organization. A wrong supplier selection can hardly be reversed in warehousing services, as the cost of change is usually high. The article demonstrates the practical application of the expert system-assisted supplier selection method in a real-world supply chain environment and thoroughly analyzes the achieved results and advantages. The results show that the expert system-assisted method not only increases supplier safety and security but also contributes to improving the efficiency and sustainability of the supply chain. This article provides valuable guidance and solutions for companies looking to enhance their supplier selection using expert system technologies, thereby increasing the safety and security of their supply chains.

Strengthening policy goals to support dual careers of athletes in a Hungarian region: Opportunities for competence development through education

Publication Name: International Journal of Innovative Research and Scientific Studies

Publication Date: 2025-01-01

Volume: 8

Issue: 3

Page Range: 4335-4346

Description:

This study examines the effectiveness of dual career programs for athletes in the Western Transdanubian Region among high school students. The aim of this research is to analyze the possibilities for developing the competencies necessary for a successful dual career and to assess the coherence between policy support and educational development. Using an online questionnaire, a cross-sectional survey was conducted among 596 secondary school students in two cities, distinguishing and comparing sport-oriented and non-sport-oriented institutions. The research examined the practical implementation of dual career guidance programs and the effectiveness of school sport support. The results confirmed that more than half of the respondents had not participated in any formal dual career support program. While sports-oriented schools showed higher levels of support, non-sport-oriented schools showed a significant lack of such programs. Despite the high aspirations of students to continue their sporting careers after high school, and the ambition of a significant number of students to become professional athletes, the majority have not received training or guidance on how to build a dual career. Instead, most relied on their families or themselves. The study concludes by calling for a rethink of the framework for dual career support systems to better align policy with practice.

TURNING THE TRIPLE BURDEN OF UKRAINIAN DEPOPULATION INTO A QUADRUPLE BURDEN: THE RESULTS OF A SURVEY AMONG UKRAINIAN REFUGEE WOMEN

Publication Name: Economics and Sociology

Publication Date: 2025-01-01

Volume: 18

Issue: 1

Page Range: 296-312

Description:

The effects of the Russian-Ukrainian war on Ukraine's demographic landscape are immense. One key consideration is whether Ukrainian refugee women intend to return to their country after the war ends. If the return is planned, the question of whether they would wish to have children is also relevant. This study explored these issues by surveying women who fled to Hungary and the Netherlands. Among those surveyed, 42% did not plan to return under any circumstances, and only 12% intended to return even if their home area came under Russian control. Logistic regression was used to identify factors influencing the intention to return, with reluctance to have additional children and income earned through employment emerging as the strongest explanatory factors. However, we found only modest associations between the intention to return and other variables. Our findings suggest that deeply rooted personal preferences shape these women’s plans.

Evaluating the impact of advertising strategies on rural brand building: Insights from the personal care FMCG sector

Publication Name: Innovative Marketing

Publication Date: 2025-01-01

Volume: 21

Issue: 3

Page Range: 117-127

Description:

This study examines how advertising strategies, namely, content, media, and design, influence brand-building efforts in rural markets, with a specific focus on the mediating role of content relevance. Anchored in the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM), the research recognizes that rural consumers often process advertising through the peripheral route, relying on visual, linguistic, and cultural cues rather than rational evaluation. Data were collected through a structured survey of 498 rural consumers across thirteen towns in Madhya Pradesh. Using covariance-based structural equation modelling, the study finds that advertising content (β = 0.353), media (β = 0.253), and design (β = 0.298) significantly affect brand perceptions. More importantly, content relevance emerges as a key mediator, with indirect effects ranging from β = 0.180 to 0.243 (p < 0.01), indicating that rural consumers are more likely to engage with advertising that aligns with their values, language, and lifestyle. Theoretically, the study extends the ELM framework to low-involvement consumer settings and highlights the nuanced role of cultural relevance in shaping brand engagement. Practically, the findings offer marketers a roadmap for creating locally adapted and emotionally resonant campaigns that move beyond urban-centric models. This research underscores the im-portance of designing inclusive advertising strategies that build lasting brand relationships with India’s diverse rural population.

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) for Ethiopian Educators: Evaluating MOOCs as a global development tool

Publication Name: Research in Globalization

Publication Date: 2024-12-01

Volume: 9

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: Unknown

Description:

This study examines how global educational technologies interact with local development priorities through the lens of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in Ethiopian higher education teacher training. While digital learning platforms promise to democratize education globally, their effectiveness depends critically on alignment with local institutional contexts and development needs. Using survey data from 164 educators across 15 public universities, we investigate how institutional contexts shape technology integration patterns. Our analysis, integrating development theory with technology acceptance models, reveals three critical dimensions: the gap between awareness and participation reflects broader implementation challenges; previous experiences with development initiatives significantly influence adoption patterns; and state support proves crucial for enabling participation. While MOOCs offer potential for professional development in resource-constrained contexts, their effectiveness depends on complex interactions among infrastructure quality, institutional capacity, and material conditions. These findings contribute to the theoretical understanding of how global technological innovations interact with local institutional contexts to produce varied development outcomes, while offering practical insights for educational technology implementation in the Global South.

Disproportionate exposure to urban heat island intensity – The case study of Győr, Hungary

Publication Name: Hungarian Geographical Bulletin

Publication Date: 2024-03-30

Volume: 73

Issue: 1

Page Range: 17-33

Description:

Extensive research has shown that urbanisation has a profound effect on the local climate system, leading to the formation of urban heat island. Exposure to urban heat islands poses a major health risk, and there is a growing body of literature recognising that urban population groups with particular demographic characteristics living in specific types of residential environments are disproportionately affected. By combining surface urban heat island data from the Global Surface Urban Heat Island Explorer with neighbourhood-level data on demographics and the type of housing, this study assesses disproportionate exposure to surface urban heat island intensity in the city of Győr, Hungary. Results of the study highlight the importance of targeted interventions for environmental justice, especially in areas characterised by housing estates, high population density and high ageing index.

CHANGES IN HOUSEHOLD INCOME AFTER POLAND'S ACCESSION TO THE EUROPEAN UNION

Publication Name: Economics and Sociology

Publication Date: 2024-01-01

Volume: 17

Issue: 4

Page Range: 295-314

Description:

Income is crucial to meeting life's needs. Changes in its size and structure are fundamental determinants of living standards in the countryside. The article presents an analysis of the economic situation of inhabitants of rural areas during the period of Poland's integration with the European Union (years 2002-2022 or 2004-2022). The main indicators are the level, structure and relations of income. Households of basic socio-economic groups and by place of residence (rural and urban) were compared. The study showed convergence of the standard of living of rural and urban inhabitants and of farmers and other groups of households. Convergence was primarily the result of a higher dynamics of income growth of rural in-habitants than of urban inhabitants and farmers compared to other groups of households. This was mainly the result of significant financial support directed to rural areas and farmers, among others, within the framework of the common agricultural policy. The 20th anniversary of Poland's accession to the European Union is an opportunity to sum up and assess how Poland's membership in the EU has affected the standard and quality of life of the Polish population, especially the inhabitants of rural areas.

Illicit practices: Experience of developed countries

Publication Name: Journal of International Studies

Publication Date: 2024-01-01

Volume: 17

Issue: 2

Page Range: 146-177

Description:

The article is devoted to finding the answer to two research questions. What illegal practices are most significant for clusters of developed countries formed by similarities in trends in corruption, shadow economy, money laundering, and crime rates? What social, economic, regulatory, and digital factors most influence them in each group? The pair correlation coefficients for illicit practices indicators confirm the presence of tight and statistically significant relationships in their trends for 36 developed countries. The agglomerative clustering and canonical analysis results identified that tackling the shadow economy is crucial for Estonia, Slovenia, and Lithuania; corruption for Portugal, Hungary, Cyprus, etc.; the shadow sector and crime levels for Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and New Zealand; corruption, money laundering, and crime for Canada, Germany, the USA, etc.; four illegal practices for Italy, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Romania. The canonical analysis revealed that social and regulatory factors influence the trends of illicit practices in developed countries more than economic and digital ones. Network analysis showed their single moderate influence in most cases. Edge evidence probability analysis confirmed a high probability of a relationship between some pairs of social, economic, regulatory, digital and illegal indicators. However, Bayesian network analysis showed a low likelihood of mutual influence of single factors, confirming the importance of the group influence.

Forecasting of macroeconomic stability post-pandemic recovery: The case of European countries

Publication Name: Journal of International Studies

Publication Date: 2024-01-01

Volume: 17

Issue: 4

Page Range: 56-79

Description:

The unfolding of the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed "bottlenecks" not only in the healthcare system, which was unable to cope with a significant influx of patients and quickly eliminate the spread of coronavirus infection, but also the vulnerability of the socioeconomic systems of countries all over the world. The research aims to determine country-specific trend patterns of volatility of the integral level of macroeconomic stability and its components and forecast their values for the medium term to determine the dynamics of post-pandemic recovery. The implementation of the research objectives involves the implementation of the following steps: 1) determining outliers in data series that characterise the dynamics of the components of macroeconomic stability in the context of each of the 10 studied countries; 2) eliminating outliers; 3) determining the highest-quality functional form of the dependence of the change in the corresponding individual macroeconomic indicator over time; 4) forecasting the change in individual indicators and the integral level of macroeconomic stability for the medium term (2023-2025); 5) determining the deviations of the forecast values of the above indicators from their pre-pandemic level (2019) and end-of-pandemic level (2022); 6) qualitative interpretation of the forecasting results.

Towards Sustainability in the Automotive Industry – Circular Economic Practices of the Audi Group

Publication Name: Chemical Engineering Transactions

Publication Date: 2023-01-01

Volume: 107

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 211-216

Description:

Circular Economy is an economic concept that aims to maximise resource efficiency and minimise waste generation by recycling, reusing, remanufacturing, and repairing products to extend their lifespan and extract maximum value from them. Historically, the automotive industry has not focused on sustainable practices. In the last decade, automotive manufacturers have increasingly adopted circular economy practices driven by a combination of environmental concerns, resource scarcity, regulatory pressures, consumer demand, and the pursuit of new business opportunities. By embracing circularity, the industry aims to reduce its environmental impact, optimise resource use, and build a more sustainable and resilient future. The paper provides a review to present the concept of circular economy and to evaluate its current state in the automotive industry. The case study aims to provide a glimpse into the initiatives and strategies being made by the Audi Group to become circular. The research is descriptive and includes mainly qualitative methods using a content analysis of corporate sustainability reports, websites, and interviews to gather data.

Working while studying at Széchenyi István University in Gyor

Publication Name: Statisztikai Szemle

Publication Date: 2023-01-01

Volume: 101

Issue: 10

Page Range: 915-932

Description:

In April 2023, we conducted a survey among undergraduate students at the Széchenyi István University of Győr, where almost 500 evaluable questionnaires were collected. We not only wanted to find out the working habits of students in Gyor but also to reveal how much undergraduate students are involved in the platform economy. However, we found examples almost exclusively of food deliveries, although more than 55% of students worked somewhere. Nearly half of the working students were involved in work activities for more than 40 hours per month. This paper focuses on analysing the correlations between working students' salaries and their other characteristics. To this end, in addition to descriptive statistical analysis of the survey results, we use an ordinal logistic estimation.

Sustainability in Place Marketing

Publication Name: Chemical Engineering Transactions

Publication Date: 2023-01-01

Volume: 107

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 313-318

Description:

Changing consumer habits and social and economic changes have led most local authorities to rethink their marketing strategies to meet new challenges. However, marketing strategies often encourage over-consumption, so an ill-conceived marketing campaign can be fatal for a local authority. One of these is the cluster of literature dealing with the environment, environmental awareness, the impact of tourism, and the ecological footprint. The focus of this paper is to examine the cluster covering the topic of sustainable development. A prominent element of the SDGs is sustainable cities and communities, on which tourism can have a very significant impact, for instance, through transport emissions. The research examines the relevant indicators of the UN SDG 11 tracker (Our World in Data) and the OECD Better Life Index, systematically comparing the indicators covered by the study. The research results will show the inconsistencies, advantages, and disadvantages of the indicators in terms of sustainability and quality of life, which can help develop local marketing strategies.

Hungarian Battery Production – Public Opinion on Sustainability, Labor Market and the Environmental Protection

Publication Name: Chemical Engineering Transactions

Publication Date: 2023-01-01

Volume: 107

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 691-696

Description:

Transportation in the 20th century was linked to hydrocarbons. The first steps of the transition to electric propulsion are currently underway. Technical experts are still debating whether this is the ideal solution while producing the batteries required for the method has begun. One of the main areas of high-speed industrialization is Hungary. The government's intention is clear, primarily to increase GDP and create jobs. The population knows that jobs can only be filled by foreign, immigrant workers and is extremely worried about possible accidents during production and destruction. The research aims to explore the opinions in detail and examine the possibilities of approximating different positions. This quantitative study found that the respondents would like to live at an unrealistically large distance from such facilities. Many people want the battery factories to be banned or the investments to be stopped, and the fact that very few people are informed from the literature plays a significant role. The greatest fear is experienced among the middle-aged, and we justify our findings with social facts and negative events. In order to resolve the tensions, it is recommended to educate the masses on the one hand, and on the other hand, stricter control, and more significant sanctions. These methods ensure that negotiations between the population, civil organizations, and companies end with a compromise created by a debate supported by arguments in civilized conditions.

Circular Concepts and Values: Will Reuse Become Fashionable?

Publication Name: Chemical Engineering Transactions

Publication Date: 2023-01-01

Volume: 107

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 301-306

Description:

Analysts often treat the circular economy as a technical issue. They often focus on how to organise work processes better. The authors’ concept is that circularity is much more than that, and a more precise and holistic approach can help create a better and more inclusive future for all. Young people play a key role in achieving a circular future (as a socioeconomic system). In this paper, the authors will look at how young people relate to circular processes. The research, based on a survey of 1,442 university students, took place in November and December 2022. The majority of the respondents were born around 2000 and are enrolled in undergraduate studies at Széchenyi István University. The questions of a standardised questionnaire were designed to collect information on the awareness of participation in the socioeconomic cycle process, the understanding of the context and the way of participation. The results of the research show that the students who consider themselves environmentally conscious are more likely to recycle and collect waste selectively, but it is not clear whether they participate in extending the life of the objects (swapping, second market, etc.). The research also found that students do not use and are typically unaware of online applications promoting circular lifestyles. The research sheds light on what a circular future would look like and what could be built on it.

Hungarian Battery Production - Analysis from the Perspective of Environmental Protection and the Labour Market

Publication Name: Hrvatski Geografski Glasnik

Publication Date: 2024-01-01

Volume: 86

Issue: 2

Page Range: 5-17

Description:

In the 20th century, transportation heavily relied on hydrocarbons. Currently, the initial transition to electric propulsion is being witnessed. There's an ongoing debate among technical experts regarding its effectiveness alongside the start of battery production. Our research focuses on the labour market impact of companies operating in battery manufacturing, component production, and disposal in Hungary, as well as the opinions of local residents regarding the establishment of these organizations. Our research aims to track the differences and similarities between the governmental standpoint and the population's views. Hungary stands out for its rapid industrialization, focusing on enhancing GDP and job creation. The population is concerned about employing immigrant workers and potential battery production and disposal accidents. Our qualitative study adheres to the European Green Deal principles, including insights on battery manufacturing from transportation experts, manufacturers' associations, and environmentalists. Our quantitative research shows a preference for living at an unrealistic distance from such facilities. Many citizens advocate for the cessation of battery factory operations or investments, a stance mainly due to limited public awareness. Middle-aged individuals exhibit the most fear, and we correlate our findings with societal facts and negative incidents. To mitigate these tensions, mass education, tighter regulation, and increased sanctions are recommended.

GDP per capita and human capital investment in five countries after exhaustion of the first demographic dividend

Publication Name: Regional Statistics

Publication Date: 2025-01-01

Volume: 15

Issue: 5

Page Range: 908-929

Description:

As total fertility rates (TFRs) decline globally and life expectancy rises, population aging presents significant economic challenges, including a shrinking working-age population and slower economic growth. This paper examines the impact of aging on economic growth trajectories in China, Hungary, Italy, Sweden, and the Republic of Korea, exploring how differing aging patterns influence economic outcomes. Using a general equilibrium model where agents optimize over an infinite horizon, the study projects GDP per capita and per worker over 60 years. The selected countries, each with TFRs below the replacement level for over three decades, are grouped based on demographic aging indicators. GDP trajectories are shaped by the ratios of the older and young populations to the workingage group and changes in workforce size. Human capital investment is a key component of the model, as each child, while they are young, receives human capital investment every year. This investment determines their future productivity in the workforce and, consequently, the productivity of the overall economy. To our knowledge, no prior research has examined human capital investments across multiple periods in models with infinitely optimizing agents and their cumulative impact on economic productivity. The findings suggest that aging trajectories significantly shape economic growth paths, underscoring the need for tailored strategies to sustain growth in different demographic contexts.
