Enhancing Supply Chain Safety and Security: A Novel AI-Assisted Supplier Selection Method

The "Make or Buy" decision and the supplier selection are critical steps for the efficient operation of companies' supply chains. Safety and security are paramount considerations, especially in industries like logistics, where supply chains are vulnerable to external threats and disruptions. In this scientific article, we present a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted supplier selection method that significantly enhances the safety and security of suppliers. During our research project, we have created an expert system and a corresponding knowledge base with the relevant rules to support supply chain decision-makers in selecting logistics service providers for warehousing services. The foundation of the AI-assisted supplier selection method is advanced data analytics and the application of expert systems, enabling companies to evaluate potential suppliers in detail from a safety and security perspective. The applied expert systems can identify potential risks and make predictions about supplier performance in the future. In the turbulent environment of the global supply chain, selecting long-term partners like warehousing services providers is critical for the success of the organization. A wrong supplier selection can hardly be reversed in warehousing services, as the cost of change is usually high. The article demonstrates the practical application of the expert system-assisted supplier selection method in a real-world supply chain environment and thoroughly analyzes the achieved results and advantages. The results show that the expert system-assisted method not only increases supplier safety and security but also contributes to improving the efficiency and sustainability of the supply chain. This article provides valuable guidance and solutions for companies looking to enhance their supplier selection using expert system technologies, thereby increasing the safety and security of their supply chains.

SENIOR MANAGEMENT MINDSETS FOR CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Despite the large amount of factual data on senior management’s significant role in achieving corporate social responsibility (CSR), little effort has been devoted to shed light on the CSR decision-making process and the managerial mindsets that drive it. To fill this gap in CSR research, this study explores the CSR decision-making process and senior management mindsets regarding CSR, inductively prompted by the CSR literature and a qualitative study. This study offers a conceptual model of socially responsible decision-making based on the Doctus knowledge-based system. The model is empirically analyzed and verified through semi-structured interviews with CSR experts. Further, an inductive examination of the qualitative data using individual-level analysis revealed three different mindsets of senior management towards CSR: conformist, self-interested, and shareholder satisfaction/profit-driven mindsets.

R&D project evaluation at a university with knowledge acquisition and knowledge engineering

Significant research on R&D project evaluation methods is feasible when we have clear data and conditions for measurement. In university projects, it is unwise to use directly the reference points and practices of industrial or independent labs. As a result, the method and the model introduced in this paper are adapted to find the most informative success factors for engineering R&D projects when the non-professional project manager’s experience is the primary source of data. The model was developed using knowledge acquisition (KA), while 21 projects within the same domain were recorded in the knowledge base through semi-structured interviews with experienced project managers during a fine-tuning process. The contribution of this paper is the logical rules and the attributes by which we can understand the project managers’ mindset in R&D projects of a higher education institutions. The paper includes an evaluation of the projects as a case study.

The Digital Age has brought not only new tools but also several new methods. A Collaborative Knowledge Platform with a hybrid intelligent system may be the appropriate base of a knowledge management system to ensure inspiration and new knowledge for a professional group of individuals. The introduced concept contributes to Knowledge Collaboration and Knowledge Engineering. The method is a special form of Knowledge Engineering which involves combining machine learning algorithms with cased-based reasoning and the result is the transformation of personal knowledge to widely adaptable explicit knowledge. Individuals can learn informally while their learning route automatically generates data for reductive reasoning process, which finally leads to the opportunity of experience mining. A concept and an approach are suggested to improve the knowledge collaboration in innovative communities, and a creative problem solving process delivers the outcome in the development of a Knowledge Management System. Finally, some partial results of the design phase of an application are presented.

On the other Side of Technology: Examining of Different Behavior Patterns with Artificial Intelligence

In this study, the initial problem is the capacity of the human mind to set up a conceptual model. The novelty of this article is that we show that defined concepts created by the human mind can be passed on to an artificial intelligence-based expert system. The expert system helps the human mind to settle the logical connections between the defined terms and the conceptual model thus the created model will be better than what man could have set up without an expert system. The appearance and role of employee turnover has become a more and more important factor in the daily business of corporate life. Scientific journals have examined the positive and negative effects of it, which has also provided useful knowledge for practitioners. These articles have examined the impact of employee turnover in countless aspects, but one aspect was the same in all literature: the impact of turnover on a company is not negligible and cannot be ignored in terms of neither material nor moral aspects. As a starting point for our research, we systematically reviewed the literature on employee turnover and selected six concepts that are bilaterally related to our phenomenon. Based on the terms and the correlation of it, we created a conceptual model that was examined with the help of an artificial intelligence-based system. To select a system, we reviewed the classifications of the artificial intelligence-based systems which can model human decision making and can help our research. Relying on the processing of the literature review articles, we selected and briefly characterized a rule-based reasoning system, and investigated the rule constellations of it, which can model the turnover cases as the topic of our study. Based on our experience in observing, consulting, and working with decision-makers, we examined the aspects of employee turnover phenomenon in the analysis and we constructed a three-level model that found logical relationships between each subcategory and was able to realistically reflect certain behavioral patterns of the physical workforce of a manufacturing company. The analysis was performed using a rule-based system, which used logical rules and found classical “if-then” connections in the employee behavior cases. According to our examination, our outcomes can provide credible results for further research activities as well as for practitioners.

The environment of workplaces, the performance of the employee, and the different effects of the withdrawal behaviors are a common interesting area for many researchers. The scientific journals have published several aspects of the employee's behavior in the work environment to present the most im-portant effects on it. This study organically combines the literature-defined concepts of behavioral patterns with a case-based analysis. We connect performance and employee behavior to the cognition of human behavior, human mindset, and the process of decision-making. The focal point is the concep-tual triad of employee turnover, commitment, and satisfaction. It has been investigated from the trust approach because this is the environment in which we can set up a pattern of employee mindset at work that can help the company in the strategic decision-making process. 73 dismissal cases of manual workers from manufacturing companies served as the basis of inves-tigation. Instead of the common Likert scale in surveys, this study modelled the human mindset based on logical correlations with help of an expert system that can provide a deeper insight into the human decision logic. The nov-elty of the research method creates an opportunity to represent information more nuanced than statistical methods. The paper discusses the potential implications of the model in terms of employee turnover and human decision-making priority.

Mindset Patterns of Newcomers to Organic Farming in Hungary

Counterurbanization, rural in-migrant trend studies rarely focus on the individual decision-making process. This paper studies the mindset patterns and frames the decision to select organic farming as a next career. We aimed to deepen our understanding of the complex reasoning that motivatesnewcomers to choose organic farming on a personal level. Based on semi-structured interviews, we developed a questionnaire and collected data from the newcomer to organic farming community in Hungary. The responses were analyzed using: (1) factor analysis to assess the dimensionality of the factors and (2) knowledge-based expert system to identify the logical connections between the aspirations. Our conceptual model was developed based on if-then rules between the identified aspirations, which describe the mindset patterns of newcomers to organic farming.

Understanding intentions towards seeking university-business partnerships – analysing four european cases

It is an important economic and social issue for universities to provide value for their communities by seeking and maintaining partnerships with local firms. This paper analyses institutions of different national economies. It systematises the differences and similarities in the communication of universities aiming to partnering. To this end, we present four European cases from France, Germany, Hungary and Poland. The methodology lies in its grounded theory approach to a continuous multi-case analysis. Our hypotheses are as follows: There are role differences of universities in the observed cases (H1). There are different understandings behind fruitful university-business partnerships (H2). The rate of diversification in local industries effects the presence and types of university services and business partnering activity (H3). Data hubs were extracted from institutional communications and integrated with local economic data input. The novel approach of applying the grounded theory supports complex observation. Notions of fruitful partnerships are institution-specific, but we identify two opposite perspectives of strategies to run efficient university-business partnering. The structure of the local industrial environment, research output and university-business interactions have definable mutual effects.

Beyond 160 applications of an expert system: Key to a better usability

The most influential relevant thinkers have complained of the 'poverty' of Expert Systems (ES) both in the past (Dreyfus and Dreyfus, 1986) and in recently studies as well (Müller and Bostrom, 2016). We developed our own AI-Based Expert System shell for rule-based and case-based reasoning three decades ago and now there are 160 Knowledge Engineering (KE) process behind us with this system. We hope that this experience give us the right to formulate an opinion about that what is the key to a better usability and user experience in understanding of the result of the decision making process. While we do not think that ES is an omnipotent panacea, we also do not think that its applicability is determined only by the shell capabilities. However, one ability is essential; namely, presenting the result as simply as possible in order to that the decision-maker also can understand it. Our finding is that ES shells are only able to be transparent if they are designed by people who have an understanding of the human thinking process instead of a strong math-based software development approach.

Modeling the intuitive decision-maker’s mindset

Today, the term, Working Memory, is closely associated with intelligence. We propose that in addition to improving and speeding-up analysis, Artificial Intelligence (AI) can also be useful as a supplement to Working Memory. It is generally accepted that working memory plays a crucial role in cognition and models by computers, can help us understand the human mind. Building an artificial working memory can bring further benefits; for example, it can separate retrieval from reasoning and therefore, can acquire new concepts. The aim of this research is to solve the capacity shortage problem of Working Memory, by using AI as a supplement. In order to develop our argument, we characterize the ID3 algorithm as a way of looking for a consistent solution in the existing Case Based Graph; as the ID3 algorithm builds it from an empty graph, to an increasingly complex one. Methodologically, our study is based on observation of several Digital Natives (DNs) playing different games at Mobilis Interactive Exhibition Center in Gyor, Hungary. The aim is to explore the behavior of the DN generation. By identifying the different mindset patterns of DNs, we will be able to observe how different DNs can be facilitated, to enjoy the games, rather than being bored, anxious or even, becoming addicted.

Social Impact Assessment in Urban Security Management Projects: A Case Study from Pakistan

Public safety and security management projects are devised to reduce crime, fear and calamities by prevailing law and order to reduce the harm in society. In a certain context, social impact assessment is a novel way to reveal the extent of effectiveness for these projects. This case study presents an Expert System based methodology regarding social impact assessment for two urban security management projects in Pakistan. An Expert System, DoctuS is employed as a tool to build a rule-based model tool using social impact attributes (as variables) from literature and expert knowledge (Author’s own insight as being involved in projects). Case-based reasoning (CBR) method is employed for the measurement of the impact of urban security management KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) in the two case projects. The empirical findings in this case study approaches the impact assessment by quantitative analysis of crime rates in JMP statistical package and Qualitative Expert knowledge-based model in DoctuS. Thereby, the study evaluates the pre and post ante project situations in order to assess the project’s effectiveness and impact on improved urban safety and security. In the first step, the projects are briefly described, followed by the crime rate analysis under the project jurisdictions and rules between attributes are defined. The second step defines the qualitative rule-based model along with the two cases described, and validated in DoctuS tool. Some attributes and rules have changed, and a new concise model is presented. The Expert System compares the project cases and evaluates the social impact assessment based on the defined KPIs. The Expert system validation presents a novel model for social impact assessment of subject urban security management projects. We propose this methodology and model as useful in investigating social impact assessment of projects specifically dealing with urban safety and security management. However, the generalizability of the findings of this case-study based articles need more sophisticated tests as recommendation for the extension to this study
