The role of nature versus nurture, and the relative strengths and weaknesses of evolutionary and gradient-based approaches have been the subject of fiery debate in the AI community for quite some time. As outlined in the paper, these approaches have unique advantages and at the same time by no means exhaust the list of tools necessary for designing artificially intelligent behavior. In particular, the importance of parameter initialization is often underestimated, as demonstrated by the widely publicized 'lottery ticket hypothesis'. Following a discussion on why parameter initialization seems to be more important than previously acknowledged, a grid-based model is introduced which combines certain characteristics of evolutionary and gradient-based approaches with the goal of supporting robust parameter initialization.

State-space modelling theory is still a current topic of electrical machines in drive control. Induction machines can be described by nonlinear model leading to linear parameter varying (LPV) state-space model. In order to solve the above-mentioned highly nonlinear problem, Tensor Product (TP) transformation has been chosen. Big advantage of TP modelling are the short simulation time in MATLAB and speed controller can be designed easily.

Description:

The basic aim of the research presented in this paper was a complex evaluation of a practical space exercise supported by virtual tools, with a special focus on the role of VR technology and the software used. The research also examined technological and methodological aspects such as the effectiveness of VR lab exercises, the quality of online learning materials and software, and the role of instructors. The methodology of our research was based on attitudinal analysis and descriptive statistical analysis, an important part of which was an evaluation of the VR software used, which not only characterises the current situation but also determines future development directions. As a result of our research, we can conclude that VR technology, especially 3D visualisation and interactive exercises, have proven to be particularly important in the learning process, but the future of VT technology in education is still perceived by students as somewhat uncertain due to infrastructural and resource constraints. Furthermore, our research results show that there is a need to improve the IT infrastructure and further optimize VR software, as well as a need for future research on resource allocation and technology integration beyond the pedagogical effectiveness of VR technology.

This paper describes how the rapid and detailed modelling and simulation methods can be used to increase the efficiency of mixed simulation projects initiated to support the design of interconnected ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and BP (Business Process) systems. A system of cooperating rapid and detailed methods for critical and non- critical parts of systems is introduced in the phase of preliminary and detailed modelling. The method of translation of information of conceptual models that had been built prior to simulation is described, too. New methods using rapid models to model the ICT and BP systems functioning as environment for the detailed models are presented. A novel method for preliminary modelling based only on cooperating system of rapid models is described. © 2008 EUROSIS-ETI.

Food industry in EU: Testing the efficiency of business on the example of Hungary

The food industry is a sector of particular importance in the Hungarian economy. Besides the fact that its contribution to the national economic output is 4.6-5.0%, it is the largest market outlet for agricultural raw materials. Today's economic environment is constantly changing, and competitiveness can only be preserved with regard to efficient production. It is indispensable for the enterprises to know with which factors they can make their production more efficient, and which are the ones that can be improved in efficiency. In our study, we present the production and some typical indicators of the food sector in the European Union and Hungary. Our specific investigations are focused on the effectiveness of the dual-accounting food businesses. After determining each of the yield indicators (gross production value, material-free production value, net production value, added value), complex and partial efficiency indicators have been calculated and analyzed. Between 2013 and 2017, the yield indicators of the examined food businesses were increasing year by year despite the significant reduction in the number of enterprises by 2017 (fresher statistics currently available in Hungary). The complex efficiency indicator has been declining since 2016 which is caused by extremely high committed asset values and insufficient utilization of resources. The change in the yield indicators was followed by the change in the partial efficiency indicators. In many cases, the projection funds decreased during the period under review.

In a sugar beet trial in 1999 different herbicide applications were tested, to transfer the concept of reduced herbicide application rates to conditions of Hungaria. In every case the highest were below the registered application rate. We developed strategies with herbicides efficiencies of 90 to 100 %.

In this study, three feasible speed sensorless estimators of induction machines are presented by using extended, unscented and cubature Kalman filter algorithms. The estimators are based on an augmented non-linear state-space model of these machines, which describes the dynamics in stationary reference frame with six state variables. As an important part of the estimator design, an observability study is provided for the nonlinear model and an observability condition is formulated as well. The estimators are compared experimentally around zero stator frequency with respect to the speed estimation performance. However, the estimators are investigated only in open-loop and without external load disturbance.

Agricultural by-product filled poly(lactic acid) biocomposites with enhanced biodegradability: The effect of flax seed meal and rapeseed straw

The purpose of this research was to develop “green” materials by combining poly(lactic acid) (PLA) with two agricultural by-products, namely flax seed meal (FSM) and rapeseed straw (RSS). The natural fillers (0–20 wt.%) were mixed with PLA through extrusion and then injection molded into specimens. The samples were analyzed for their thermal, morphological, mechanical, and physical features and biodegradability. Thermal properties and crystallinity were analyzed using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), while the morphology was investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Mechanical properties were characterized through tensile, flexural, and impact measurements, while surface hardness was evaluated by Shore D tests. Water absorption and biodegradability of the samples were also examined. DSC measurements revealed a nucleating effect of both bio-fillers. Based on the tensile tests, major improvement in stiffness was found with the biocomposites having up to ∼16 % higher Young's modulus than neat PLA (2.5 GPa). It came, however, at the cost of tensile strength, which decreased from 56 to 51 MPa even in the presence of the lowest amount (2.5 wt.%) of FSM. Loss in strength was due to the limited adhesion between the components, as also supported by SEM images. The hardness slightly (1–2 %) improved in the presence of even 2.5 wt.% bio-filler and it remained at that level at higher filler loading as well. Laboratory-scale composting revealed that both fillers facilitated biodegradation with FSM being superior. In the presence of 10–20 wt.% FSM, the rate of decomposition was found to be twice as fast compared to neat PLA.
