Association of ANKK1 and DRD2 gene polymorphisms with exercise addiction among elite athletes

Exercise addiction is a behavior that may dysregulate athletic performance, and social and professional interactions of athletes. Whereas environmental factors including training routines and personal traits could contribute to exercise addiction, recent studies have emphasized the importance of genetic predisposition, leading to development of a subfield known as sports psychogenetics. In sports psychogenetics, ankyrin repeat and kinase domain containing 1 (ANKK1) and dopamine receptor D2 (DRD2) genes, located on chromosome 11 in a close proximity, have attracted research interest due to their involvement in dopaminergic signaling playing a crucial role in reward processing, motivation, cognition and behavior. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate potential associations between 14 polymorphisms in ANKK1/DRD2 and exercise addiction among elite badminton players (n = 39) and elite wrestlers (n = 68). Exercise addiction was assessed using a psychometric screening instrument and allele frequencies of the selected polymorphisms were analyzed through genotyping with a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) microarray. Results indicated that two SNPs, rs7118900 and rs4436578, were significantly and independently associated with exercise addiction. Rs7118900 has previously been associated with an increased risk of drug addiction, neuroticism, and depressed effect whereas rs4436578 has been associated with neuroticism. In addition to those SNPS, rs2283265 and rs1125394 SNPs were also linked to exercise addiction in a branch-independent manner. Therefore, it is proposed that these SNPs could serve as genetic markers for identifying individuals at high risk of exercise addiction among athletes. However, further research is needed to understand the involvement of these SNPs in exercise addiction more comprehensively.

Energy Storage System Selection by Using Complex Intuitionistic Fuzzy Rough MCDM Technique Based on Schweizer-Sklar Operators

Energy Storage System (ESS) is a talented solution to overcome the intermittency (that they do not produce energy all the time) and demand-supply misalliance problems in different renewable energy systems. Selecting the most optimal ESS requires the consideration of different conflicting criteria under uncertainty. This study presents a novel Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) framework based on Complex Intuitionistic Fuzzy Rough Sets (CIFRSs) and Schweizer-Sklar aggregation operators to facilitate a more comprehensive and flexible ESS selection process. Specifically, we develop new aggregation operators namely, the Complex Intuitionistic Fuzzy Rough (CIFR) Schweizer-Sklar weighted average and the CIFR Schweizer-Sklar weighted geometric operators to model imprecise, vague, and inconsistent information. CIFR-MCDM methodology captures the intuitionistic, roughness and extra related fuzzy information in one structure. A case study is performed to illustrate the applicability of the suggested method in ranking different ESS alternatives. Comparative analysis with existing approaches confirms the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed framework in handling complex decision environments. The results highlight the potential of the CIFR-MCDM methodology to support informed and reliable ESS selection in renewable energy applications.

Does import product diversification enhance energy demand in developed and developing economies? A policy-based analysis in the context of trade sustainability

Import product diversification is a major parameter in international trade. Import diversification contributes to economic growth and affects the environment due to its impact on energy consumption. In this article, we investigate the impact of import product diversification along with income, oil prices, natural resources, population, and foreign direct investment on energy demand, covering a composite sample of 102 developing and 36 developed economies over the period from 1995 to 2020. We also assess the impact of import diversification on energy demand considering all sub-samples. We find a significant long-run cointegration between total energy demand and import diversification for both developed and developing countries, confirmed by Pedroni cointegration tests. We further denote that import diversification together with other independent variables is stationary after the first differences in LLC unit root tests. Contrary to traditional methods, we apply panel quantile regression and conclude that import diversification, GDP, oil prices, foreign direct investment, natural resources, and population share long-run integration with total energy consumption for both developed and developing countries. The Dumitrescu and Hurlin short-run causality test confirms the existence of pair-wise bidirectional causality between all independent variables including import diversification, GDP, oil prices, natural resources, foreign investment, and population with energy demand. Our empirics conclude with important policy implications for sustainability.

Estimation of Thermodynamic and Emission Characteristics of a Sustainable Hydrogen-Gasoline Engine Through Simulation

Hydrogen is expected to play a significant role in mobility and transportation as a form of energy source. To assess the effects of hydrogen as a gradual replacement fuel for internal combustion engines, a preliminary 1D thermodynamic simulation was carried out using AVL Boost for 0 vol%, 4 vol% and 8 vol% hydrogen content. Calculations were based on independently published research results, and focused on peak firing temperature (PFT), brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), nitrous oxide emission (NOx), and carbon monoxide (CO) emission values. Results showed a decrease in BSFC of up to 3 g/kWh and ca. 5 mg/kWh decrease in CO emission with 8 vol% hydrogen, but also highlight an increase of PFT by 14 K, and ca. 0.5 g/kWh additional NOx production at high loads.

Scapula dyskinesis in medium-sized full-thickness rotator cuff tear after subacromial Lidocaine infiltration and rotator cuff reconstruction

Purpose: In rotator cuff tears, scapular dyskinesis is often observed. The aim of our study is to better understand the cause and the role of scapular dyskinesis in rotator cuff tears and evaluate changes in scapulothoracic kinematics after Lidocaine subacromial injection and surgery in patients with medium-sized (1–3 cm) rotator cuff tear. Methods: The scapular motion during humerus sagittal flexion of nine healthy persons (healthy group, HG) and nine persons with a medium-sized rotator cuff tear (surgery group, SG) was investigated using the VICON motion capture system and upper limb evaluation in movement analysis software. In addition, quality of life and functional outcomes were assessed in the SG group using American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, Oxford and Constant-Murley scores and rotator muscle force and Visual Analogue Scale score were evaluated. The SG was further divided into three subgroups: measurements were performed preoperatively (before surgery native subgroup—BSN), then after subacromial Lidocaine injection (before surgery injection subgroup—BSI) and 6 months after rotator cuff reconstruction (after surgery subgroup—AS). Changes observed after injection (BSI) and surgery (AS) were compared to the BSN. Results: In the BSI, a significant reduction (p <.025) in protraction was observed in the raising phase between 20° and 70° comparing it to the BSN, protraction decreased by 5.3° ± 7.9° (mean ± standard deviation [SD]). In the lowering phase between 80° and 30°, we registered a decrease of protraction by 6.0° ± 8.3° (mean ± SD). In the AS, we observed an approximation of protraction to the HG, but no significant change was detected. Conclusion: Significant reduction in scapular protraction was demonstrated with Lidocaine subacromial injection during both the arm raising and lowering phases. Six months of rehabilitation treatment in the postoperative period is not enough to fully eliminate scapular dyskinesis. Level of Evidence: Level II.

How the Influence of Psychoactive Substances Impacts the Road Safety of Drivers †

In Hungary, the consumption of any alcoholic beverage before driving is illegal. A person is considered drunk if they have a blood alcohol concentration of 0.5 g per liter or more. The situation regarding drug use is also disappointing. This research analyses these effects on transport and their “outcome” by evaluating analyses based on police data, driver training data, and experimental data. The research aims to further raise awareness of the public health importance of this problem through a case–control study. Descriptive and correlational, statistical calculations were performed with a significance value of p < 0.05. Between 2019 and 2023, there were 10–13.000 drunk driving offenses and 1.000–1.300 drunk-driving accidents on the roads each year, most of which occurred in the capital and caused minor injuries. The results will be used to discover synergies to improve road safety.

Dynamic Modeling Possibilities of Embedded Rail Structures

In Hungarian design practice, the Zimmermann-Eisenmann quasi-static design method is employed to dimension track structures with embedded rails. This method determines the mean values of deformations and stresses using an infinitely long elastically embedded beam as the static frame. After establishing these mean values, the effects of track condition and speed are considered through Eisenmann multiplication, enabling the definition of design values. Conversely, international practices include methods that calculate deformations and stresses based on dynamic models incorporating viscoelastic embedding, directly accounting for speed but not dynamic effects due to track characteristics. This paper presents a solution to the dynamic problem, extending it to studying rotating frames beyond the commonly considered uniaxial solution. Each factor's effect is separately analyzed for track structures with embedded rail tracks, leading to a recommendation for the value of the "load multiplication factor".

New species of Dolicheremaeus (Acari, Oribatida, Otocepheidae) from Vietnam

Two new species of the genus Dolicheremaeus (Oribatida, Otocepheidae)—D. gialaiensis n. sp. and D. kbangensis n. sp.—are described, based on adults collected from forest litter in the Kon Chu Rang Nature Reserve, central Vietnam. Dolicheremaeus gialaiensis n. sp. characterized by the unusual sculpturing (small, dense, conical tubercles) of the prodorsum, notogaster, and anogenital region. Dolicheremaeus kbangensis n. sp. differs from the related species D. baloghi and D. lineolatus by the notogastral sculpturing, the morphology of the bothridial seta, and the length of the notogastral setae. An identification key to species of Dolicheremaeus from Vietnam is provided.
