Enhancing pier local scour prediction in the presence of floating debris

Description:

Local scour poses a grave threat to bridge foundations, potentially causing catastrophic collapses. This study uses FLOW-3D with the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes model to analyze pier scour and dune formation under bridges. It focuses on submerged debris shapes near the water’s surface. Results closely match experiments when specific conditions are met. The study introduces an innovative approach to debris impact assessment. Instead of traditional methods, it proposes a novel equation accounting for debris’s effective area and elevation. This enhances reliability by over 20%, improving scour depth assessment in debris-laden scenarios. This advances the understanding of debris’s role in local scour, benefiting bridge design and management practices.

Description:

One of the most significant challenges in sustainable autonomous mobile robot and vehicle development is the perception of stochastic environments. Various environmental perception methods have been proposed to address these challenges; however, these methods often lack general applicability. Many of these methods rely on environmental feature extraction, which can fail in specific scenarios, such as monochromatic environments. This article aims to evaluate existing SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) methods that utilize camera or combined camera and LiDAR input data in predominantly monochromatic environments. Additionally, this study seeks to identify performance issues in such applications.

An Analysis of Consumer Decision-Making in Digital Mobile Payment Adoption: Exploring Influencing Factors

Despite every one of the upsides of mobile payment services (MPs), they are unutilized by a sizable client base. This paper analyzes the central drivers of utilizing MPs for purchasing purposes from the consumers' point of view in Uzbekistan. Given the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the study built up a seven-figure model to uncover the determinants of customers' goals to utilize MPs. 300 respondents in Uzbekistan were selected, and 276 substantial responses were incorporated into the analysis. The structural equation model results applied that customers' goal to utilize MPs for purchasing purposes is impacted by trust, system usefulness, social influence, risk, hedonic motivation, and attitude. The factor, facilitating conditions was not significant interestingly which the most distinct finding of that study is. Considering the findings and discussion, the paper concludes with the notion that mobile payment as a digital innovative financial technology is influenced by most of the factors that mobile operators should look at closely.

Energy-Based Approach on Calculating Stand-Off Height of Different Solder Joints

In the lifetime prediction simulations of microelectronics solder joints, the stand-off height and misalignment parameters are founded on a variety of estimation methods from very simple to complex approaches. However, the stand-off height and misalignment play essential role in the lifetime of solder joints. Thus, a reliable lifetime simulation requires proper solder geometry model. Many researchers calculate the solder geometry with the software called Surface Evolver, which minimizes the total energy, including the surface tension energy. Some of these studies used energy-based methods for the stand-off height prediction. The first hypothesis is that by changing the predefined value of stand-off height in the Surface Evolver simulation, we gain different total energy values and by differentiating the energy with respect to the stand-off height, we can obtain the vertical force and a nonlinear spring characteristic for the molten solder. Similar results can be found in the literature for BGA. Secondly, it is hypothesized that this spring-like behaviour is observable in horizontal direction too, which is related with the misalignment of the component. The presented approach provides a simple model for the prediction of the stand-off height and misalignment.

REGIONAL DISPARITIES AND DUAL DYNAMICS: ECONOMIC GROWTH AND INCOME INEQUALITY IN KAZAKHSTAN

This study examines the complex relationships between economic growth and income inequality in different regions of Kazakhstan, revealing the nuances of their interaction. The article aims to assess the long-term and short-term effects of economic growth on income inequality in both forward and reverse directions across the regions of Kazakhstan. Employing region-specific time series data allowed us to examine the bidirectional impact of economic growth on inequality, using an error correction model (ECM) to describe short-run and long-run relationships. The results highlight that the relationship between economic growth and income inequality is heterogeneous across regions, reflecting each area's unique economic and social landscapes. The estimation results support the hypothesis of an inverted U-shaped Kuznets curve linking GRP per capita to inequality with varying starting points for different regions. Regarding the inverse relationship, we identified a positive causal relationship for the West Kazakhstan, Zhambyl and Pavlodar regions, indicating that increased income inequality stimulated economic growth. The study also highlights the significant role of trade, labour force, investment and government consumption in shaping these relationships.

Anthropometric and Physiological Characteristics of Young Elite Hungarian Motocross Riders in Motocross Competitions

Background: Motocross riders’ performance is highly dependent on the characteristics of the motorcycles and the skills of the riders, and the actual environmental conditions. This study aims to describe the differences in anthropometric and physiological characteristics between internationally ranked adolescent males and nationally ranked motorcross (MX) peer competitors; Methods: Data obtained from young riders (n=14) were divided into internationally ranked G1 (n=5) and - nationally ranked G2 (n=9) young MX riders. We determined body composition and cardiorespiratory variables, and measured heart rate and movement-related data with Polar Team Pro system during the race; (3) Results: Blood lactate concentrations were evaluated before and after the race session. MX riders with an international ranking performed significantly better during both races (R1 and R2), which manifested itself in significantly shorter times per lap on average (difference for R1=14.8 s and for R2=16.7 s, respectively, p=0.017), more laps completed (G1 vs G2 approx.: 11.2: 9.9 laps for R1 and R2, p=0.019) and points scored (difference: R1=9.3 pts and R2=9.0 pts, p=0.014). There were no statistically significant differences in age between the two compared groups (p=0.559) and other anthropometric and physiological characteristics tested, with an exception of muscle mass percent (p<0.001); Conclusions: Current results showed that motocross probably places a heavy burden on riders, who need to be fit enough to maintain their position in the field.

Comparative Evaluation of Forming Limit Curve Models for AlMg Alloys †

This publication deals with the comparative analysis of theoretical and empirical models suitable for predicting forming limit curves in the case of aluminum–magnesium alloys. The Stören–Rice and Hill–Bressan–Williams equations were evaluated and justified by inverse parameter identification. They showed good agreement with the measured strain values. Using the graphical Modified Maximum Force Criterion, it was demonstrated that the Voce hardening law is more suitable than the Swift one for characterizing this group of alloys, but the weighted combination of the two hardening laws is preferable.

Foam Injection Molding of Poly(Lactic Acid) with Azodicarbonamide-Based Chemical Blowing Agent †

In this study, poly(lactic acid) (PLA)-based biopolymer foams were prepared through injection molding using the high-pressure foam injection molding method, also referred to as “breathing mold” technique, with the addition of various amounts (0, 1, 2, and 4 wt.%) of azodicarbonamide-based chemical blowing agent (CBA). The prepared samples were analyzed for their macrostructure using computed tomography (CT) while the mechanical properties were determined by flexural and Charpy impact tests. CT analysis revealed a finer foam cell structure and decreasing shell thickness with increasing CBA content. Regarding the mechanical properties, the specific flexural strength and flexural modulus of PLA were improved as a result of foaming; however, this improvement came at the cost of a slight deterioration in impact strength.
