A comparative study of local scour depth around bridge piers

Description:

Scour is the leading cause of bridge collapse beneath any bridge pier located within the waterway. A numerical-based hydraulic model named the Hydrologic Engineering Centre River Analysis System and a mathematical model of the Florida Department of Transport were implemented to investigate their performance and accuracy in estimating the maximum scour depth beneath bridge piers where large and small-scale physical prototypes are used as a benchmark. The main findings are that a hydraulic model is an effective tool when employing the Colorado State University equation, which compares well with physical prototypes irrespective of the variation in piers' size and shape. Also, it has achieved more consistent results than the Froehlich and the Florida Department of Transport methodologies.

Nowadays the driveline development of public and individual transport is very significant. More and more hybrid and full electric urban vehicle can be found on city roads. The application of electric drive increases in public transport as well. This tendency is shown in Europe, but it also can be observed in America and Asia. The figures show that the electric application tends to increase in the following years and decades. Copper is solely usable as the winding material at the motors of full electric or hybrid driven vehicles. Based on predictions, the copper resources are running down, which means that the price of copper will greatly increase in a very short time, or these resources can be totally exhausted in an extreme situation. In this article, I investigate the applications of other metals but mainly of aluminium, which could provide solutions to the replacement of copper.

Antimicrobial use and Escherichia coli resistance patterns in Hungarian pig farms: a data-driven farm-level analysis

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a critical challenge to both human and veterinary medicine, with pig production recognized as one of the major contributor due to intensive antimicrobial usage (AMU). This study aimed to explore the relationship between AMU and AMR patterns of Escherichia coli isolated from commercial pig farms, using data-driven analytical methods. Farm-level records were harmonized with microbiological data from 203 isolates collected in December 2023 across four Hungarian farms. AMU was summarized over 3-, 6-, 9-, and 12-month retrospective windows and expressed in modified population-corrected units, while AMR was quantified as mean minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and AMR rate under epidemiological and clinical breakpoints. The results revealed substantial variation in AMU among farms, with amoxicillin predominating across timeframes. Farm-specific comparisons indicated that higher AMU may not always coincide with elevated resistance levels, and data analysis did not consistently identify a direct association between use and resistance at the individual farm level, which warrants further investigation in larger datasets. Correlation analyses identified strong intra-class relationships among β-lactams and fluoroquinolones, as well as a cross-class linking, suggesting concurrent selection pressures. Overall, the integration of AMU and AMR data demonstrated the feasibility of farm-level surveillance for AMR modelling and provides a foundation for future predictive systems to support antimicrobial stewardship in livestock production.

Bifurcations of the limit directions in extended Filippov systems

This paper explores special bifurcations that appear in dynamical systems possessing codimension-2 discontinuity sets in the state space. In these systems, the vector field has continuously many directional limits at the discontinuity set. It is shown that the trajectories can reach the discontinuity set along specific limit directions. The number and type of these organising objects characterise the behaviour of the dynamics in the vicinity of the discontinuity set. Thus, bifurcations of limit directions have a remarkable effect on the system. In the paper, two special bifurcations are explored; the tangency bifurcation and the saddle–node bifurcation of limit direction are followed through different formulations of the dynamical system. It is demonstrated that these bifurcations appear in rigid body dynamics in the presence of dry friction.

A plant biostimulant is any substance or microorganism which can be applied to plants to enhance seed germination and plant growth development along with its nutritional efficiency. Plant biostimulants collectively influence: plant growth development, pollen tube development, flower and fruit set, plant pigments, shoot and root development, nutritional efficiency, yield and shelf-life of crops, rhizospheric and soil microorganisms, general soil health and plant-environment interactions. Biostimulants are derived from natural origins and can help reduce the use of chemical products and also mitigate the negative impacts of harmful chemicals in the environment. This chapter focuses on their modes of application and effects on crops and horticultural plants. It also emphasizes impacts on the shelf-life and efficiencies of commercial biostimulants, as compared to synthetic chemical products and highlights the opportunities and challenges of their market expansion.

A wavelet-based adaptive method for determining eigenstates of electronic systems

The possibilities for reducing the necessary computation power in wavelet-based electronic structure calculations are studied. The expansion of the expectation values of energy operators, the integrals of basis functions are mostly system-independent, consequently it is not necessary to compute them in each calculations. Fixed building blocks, such as a parameterized expansion of the nuclear and electron-electron cusp can reduce the amount of necessary calculation. An algorithm for local expansion refinement is also given. It is possible to determine the significant expansion coefficients of a high resolution level without solving the Schrödinger equation using only lower resolution results. © Springer-Verlag 2009.

Examining gender equality in tourism management for Hungarian regions

This study explores the impact of gender inclusivity on workplace experiences among female leaders in the Hungarian tourism management sector, with a particular focus on perceived discrimination, job insecurity, and family-related obligations. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research combined structured questionnaire data (n = 102) with qualitative insights derived from thematic content analysis of open-ended responses. Analytical methods included descriptive statistics, ANOVA, regression analysis, and cluster analysis. Findings indicate that 75% of respondents reported gender-based discrimination, especially in promotion processes, while 65% identified family responsibilities as significant barriers to career advancement. Marked regional differences emerged: Central Hungary exhibited a more inclusive work environment, with lower levels of perceived discrimination and greater job security compared to northern regions. Inclusive organizational practices were positively associated with career satis faction and tourism-related performance. The results underscore that advancing gender equality is not only a matter of social justice but also a key determinant of economic performance and regional competitiveness. The study recommends reinforcing family-friendly and inclusive workplace cultu res and calls for regionally differentiated policy interventions.

Steel Exoskeletons for the Seismic Retrofit of an Existing RC Building: Optimal Design and Life Cycle Assessment

The growing need for structural, energetic and architectonic refurbishment of the existing structures led to the emergence of alternative retrofitting techniques. Among them, steel exoskeletons stand out for their non-invasive and time-efficient nature, especially in cases where the relocation of the building’s activities is not allowed. In this research, the optimal exoskeleton configuration, in terms of number of exoskeletons and their position around the building, along with the sizing of their constituent elements, has been obtained through an optimization process. The optimization tool is based on a Genetic Algorithm with the aim of weight minimization, including as constraints a maximum allowable inter-storey drift for preserving the elastic behavior of the existing building, and the structural safety of the exoskeleton members. Two exoskeleton typologies were selected as case studies, employed for the retrofitting of an existing RC moment-resisting frame building. Furthermore, Life Cycle Assessment analyses were conducted on the optimal configurations considering two materials: steels with high and low percentages of recycled materials. The results yielded interesting insights into the structural performance of both exoskeleton typologies, as well as into the environmental characteristics of both studied materials.

Laboratory tests and numerical modeling for embankment foundation on soft chalky silt using deep-mixing

The deep-mixing is nowadays world-wide accepted method as a ground treatment technology to improve the permeability, strength and deformation properties of soils. Binders, such as lime or cement are mixed in-situ with the soil by rotating mixing tools. The method is undergoing rapid development, particularly with regard to its range of applicability, cost effectiveness and environmental advantages. The paper describes the results of laboratory tests on chalky silt samples mixed with cement of different content. The influence of the different mixing parameters on the unconfined compression strength and deformation modulus is shown and evaluated. Typical results of the laboratory tests were used in numerical modeling with PLAXIS 3D as input parameters to study the behavior of a 4 m high embankment constructed on this soil improved by deep mixed columns with different spacing and diameters. The parameters of the soil improvement technique were analyzed to study their influence on the settlement and the stability of the embankment. The trends of the calculation outputs are shown and evaluated.
