This paper presents an overview of the results obtained during the Joint Experiments organized in the framework of the IAEA Coordinated Research Project on 'Joint Research Using Small Tokamaks' that have been carried out on the tokamaks CASTOR at IPP Prague, Czech Republic (2005), T-10 at RRC 'Kurchatov Institute', Moscow, Russia (2006), and the most recent one at ISTTOK at IST, Lisbon, Portugal, in 2007. Experimental programmes were aimed at diagnosing and characterizing the core and the edge plasma turbulence in a tokamak in order to investigate correlations between the occurrence of transport barriers, improved confinement, electric fields and electrostatic turbulence using advanced diagnostics with high spatial and temporal resolution. On CASTOR and ISTTOK, electric fields were generated by biasing an electrode inserted into the edge plasma and an improvement of the global particle confinement induced by the electrode positive biasing has been observed. Geodesic acoustic modes were studied using heavy ion beam diagnostics on T-10 and ISTTOK and correlation reflectometry on T-10. ISTTOK is equipped with a gallium jet injector and the technical feasibility of gallium jets interacting with plasmas has been investigated in pulsed and ac operation. The first Joint Experiments have clearly demonstrated that small tokamaks are suitable for broad international cooperation to conduct dedicated joint research programmes. Other activities within the IAEA Coordinated Research Project on Joint Research Using Small Tokamaks are also overviewed. © 2009 IAEA, Vienna.

The role of knowledge is a determinative factor in the life of economy and society. To determine knowledge is not an easy task yet the real task is to determine the right knowledge. From this view knowledge is a sum of experience, ideas and cognitions which can help companies to remain in markets and to realize a maximum profit. At the same time changes of circumstances project in advance that contents and demands of the right knowledge are changing. In this paper we will analyse a special segment on the basis of an empirical survey. We investigated the behaviour and strategies of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the area of knowledge-handling. This survey was realized by questionnaires and wide range statistical methods were used during processing. As a result we will show how these companies are prepared to operate in a knowledge-based economy and in which areas they have prominent deficiencies.

A simple beam element based modelling technique has been developed which makes possible to analyze frames made of I sections with column-rafter bolted end-plate connections, subject to 3D loads, compatible with the thin walled beam theory with 7DOF beam elements. The model previously developed by the same team for welded connections has been extended with the addition of linear spring elements to model the bolts located at the upper and lower beam flange level. The spring stiffnesses are calculated based on the extension of the Eurocode component method and verified by simulations performed with FEA software Abaqus.

Employer branding concept for small-and medium-sized family firms

The area of this paper is employer branding of small-and medium-sized family firms. Its function is to attract the necessary quantity and quality of labour force to build competitive advantage in the market, differentiate from peers and thus facilitate company’s prosperity. Labour shortage and aging society strike Central and Eastern Europe, therefore, employers face a disadvantageous bargaining position. Family firms, that are mainly small companies, are in a unique situation. Although employer branding is a useful and hot topic nowadays in some regions of the world, it is yet greatly underresearched empirically for some kinds of associations. To close this gap, this paper aims to present an employer branding concept. We extracted the output from a two-folded literature review on the existing knowledge about the public image of small family firms and the psychological needs and employee expectations about such workplaces and employers. We narrow down the area by handling a specific pattern of employees and conducting the whole research in Hungary. The solution we are proposing to fill the gap is an employer branding concept created by customization of the Business Model Canvas.

Optimization of axial flux permanent-magnet motors is a very important topic in the literature and requires high performance optimization algorithms and finite element analysis. This paper gives a summary of the analysis methods of axial flux permanent-magnet motors currently available in the literature. An open-circuit model was built and described using the 2D Linear Motor Modeling Approach. The model was validated by comparing air-gap flux-density waveform and cogging torque results with one of the motors described in the literature as a benchmark problem. The aim of the study was to create a method for the axial-flux motor optimization based on the open-circuit finite element model using the Artap software. By applying the described method, it is possible to use local and global optimization algorithms, such as evolutionary and genetic algorithms, directly using the finite element analysis results. The proposed finite element model can be used for benchmarking and selecting the most appropriate evolutionary and genetic algorithms for this kind of optimization problems.

On wavelet based enhancing possibilities of fuzzy classification methods

If the antecedents of a fuzzy classification method are derived from pictures or measured data, it might have too many dimensions to handle. A classification scheme based on such data has to apply a careful selection or processing of the measured results: either a sampling, re-sampling is necessary. or the usage of functions, transfor-mations that reduce the long, high dimensional observed data vector or matrix into a single point or to a low number of points. Wavelet analysis can be useful in such cases in two ways. As the number of resulting points of the wavelet analysis is approximately half at each filters, a consecutive application of wavelet transform can compress the me-asurement data, thus reducing the dimensionality of the signal, i.e., the antecedent. An SHDSL telecommunication line evaluation is used to demonstrate this type of appli-cability, wavelets help in this case to overcome the pro-blem of a one dimensional signal sampling. In the case of using statistical functions, like mean, variance, gradient, edge density, Shannon or Rényi entropies for the extraction of the information from a picture or a measured data set, and they don not produce enough information for performing the classification well enough, one or two consecutive steps of wavelet analysis and applying the same functions for the thus resulting data can extend the number of antecedents, and can dis-till such parameters that were invisible for these functions in the original data set. We give two examples, two fuzzy classification schemes to show the improvement caused by wavelet analysis: a measured surface of a combustion engine cylinder and a colonoscopy picture. In the case of the first example the wear degree is to be deter-mine, in the case of the second one, the roundish polyp content of the picture. In the first case the applied statistical functions are Rényi entropy differences, the structural entropies, in the second case mean, standard deviation, Canny filtered edge density, gradients and the entropies. In all the examples stabilized KH rule interpolation was used to treat sparse rulebases.

When decisions are made by human beings these choices are often 'predictably irrational'. A large number of different biases effect the human beings' information processing systems. Because of the imperfect information processing system the decisions are imperfect as well, and very often some distortion appears in the solution. In our paper we propose a simple corrective mechanism for the loss aversion bias, presenting Kano's quality model as a case study. An 'interface' is placed between the input data and the optimizing algorithm and the input data are debiased instead of modifying the algorithm itself. The use of fuzzy numbers is adequate to model the loss aversion type bias and corrective tools. Computational results are presented as well to demonstrate the efficiency. © 2012 IEEE.

The effect of the pollinizer variety on the berry weight of currants

At currant cultivars the level of self-fertility can characterised according to the results of open pollination and the differences in berry weight. This character appears in the habits of the racemes as well. For weakly self-fertile or partially selfsterile cultivars it is necessary to use some polliniser varieties to ensure a good yield. Usually, three of four cultivars should be planted together in an orchard.
