Traditional or alternative wine packaging: a study of consumer choices and perceptions

Sustainability concerns in the wine sector have resulted in alternative types of wine packaging to traditional glass packaging. This article examines the impact of cultural heritage and environmental awareness on consumer behaviour and purchasing decisions in relation to wine packaging. To investigate this, a wine tasting experiment was carried out on a sample of 211 people in the city of Pécs, in Hungary, to assess consumers’ perceptions, taste perceptions and purchase propensity for 7 types of wine packaging. In order to measure the effect of each type of packaging, the same wine was poured into the same types of packaging. The aim of the experiment was to identify consumers’ attitudes towards traditional packaging and their preferences for alternative options. The results were analysed using factor analysis to identify 2 factor groups for each pack, which were validated using Bartlett's Test and Chi-squared Test. The results show that packaging style and traditionality have a significant impact on consumer preferences, especially for alternatives such as bag-in-box or pouch, which are completely different from the traditional glass bottle. In the case of PET bottles, the packaging itself has a strong explanatory power, which may be explained by its similarity in form to the glass bottle. The novelty of this research lies in the fact that with the help of the we were able to measure the effect of different wine packaging, alongside the role of cultural traditions. Based on the results, it is proposed that wine industry stakeholders should raise consumer awareness of the benefits of environmentally friendly packaging alternatives and take measures to reduce the environmental impact of traditional glass bottles.

Investigation of the Effects of Thermit Welding on the Mechanical Properties of the Rails

This current paper deals with the investigation of the variation of the hardness of the rail steel material in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of a rail joint made by thermit welding (TW). The tested rail is a normal R260 type rail steel category; its production date is 1977, the rolling mill was Diosgyor (Hungary), rail profile is MÁV 48.5. This rail has not been in railway track before the test. The authors performed hardness tests on the rail head’s surface even after the rail welding, as well. After the welding and hardness tests, the rail joint was cut with +/–200 mm by a rail cutter and transported to the laboratory. Water jet cutting was applied to shape six longitudinal direction slices with five vertical cutting lines from the rail piece’s head. The slices’ length was 400 mm, the width of these slices was approx. 10 mm; the TW rail joint was in the mid-point of the slices. Micro-Vickers (HV10) hardness tests were executed on these slices, in the –150…+150 mm interval lengthwise and in the 3, 6, and 10 mm depth points below the rail head’s top surface. As a result, the authors received a very detailed hardness functions of the HAZ of rail joint made by TW. These variation functions were compared to the official Elektrothermit’s SoW-5 hardness tests’ results. It can be concluded that the variation of the hardness of rail steel in the area of the HAZ correlated with the Elektrothermit’s results; however, there were some critical points where significant differences were able to be found. The highest deviation was concluded in 50 mm distance measured from the axis of welded rail joint. The authors gave possible valuable explanations for these phenomena.

Reconstruction of 3D Porous Geometry for Coupled FEM-CFD Simulation

Porous materials can be found in numerous areas of life (e. g., applied science, material science), however, the simulation of the fluid flow and transport phenomena through porous media is a significant challenge nowadays. Numerical simulations can help to analyze and understand physical processes and different phenomena in the porous structure, as well as to determine certain parameters that are difficult or impossible to measure directly or can only be determined by expensive and time-consuming experiments. The basic condition for the numerical simulations is the 3D geometric model of the porous material sample, which is the input parameter of the simulation. For this reason, geometry reconstruction is highly critical for pore-scale analysis. This paper introduces a complex process for the preparation of the microstructure's geometry in connection with a coupled FEM-CFD two-way fluid-structure interaction simulation. Micro-CT has been successfully applied to reconstruct both the fluid and solid phases of the used porous material.

Improving system reliability in optical networks by failure localization using evolutionary optimization

This paper proposes a novel approach for cost-effective link failure localization in optical networks in order to improve the reliability of telecommunication systems. In such failure localization problems the optical network is usually represented by a graph, where the task is to form connected edge sets, so-called monitoring trails (m-trails), in a way that the failure of a link causes the failure of such a combination of m-trails, which unambiguously identifies the failed link. Every m-trail consumes a given amount of resources (like bandwidth, detectors, amplifiers, etc.). Thus, operators of optical network may prefer a set of paths, whose paths can be established in an easy and cost-effective way, while minimizing the interference with the route of the existing demands, i.e. may maximize the revenue. In this paper, unlike most existing techniques dealing with failure localization in this context, the presently proposed method considers a predefined set of paths in the graph as m-trails. This way the task can also be formulated as a special Set Covering Problem (SCP), whose general form is a frequently used formulation in a certain type of operations research problems (e.g. resource assignment). Since for the SCP task evolutionary algorithms, like Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), has been successfully applied in the operations research field, in this work the failure localization task is solved by using ACO on the SCP formulation of the described covering problem, which is a rather unique combination of approaches of different fields (telecommunication, operations research and evolutionary computation) placing our investigation in the multi-field scope of complex systems. © 2013 IEEE.

Study of the antifungal effect of a copper-containing foliar fertilizer

Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the most important arable crops. Copper-containing fertilizers are used in crop production to treat or reduce the negative effects of copper deficiency. Various copper compounds are also widely used as effective fungicide agents. The influence of a copper-containing foliar fertilizer prepared from a copper solution and sucrose had been tested on the yield and raw protein content of winter wheat in previous field experiments. In this work, we studied the antifungal effect of this particular foliar fertilizer in an in vitro trial, wherein the fungicide effect on growth and reproduction of specific plant pathogens, i.e., Fusarium graminearum and Drechslera sorokiniana, was evaluated with the agar well diffusion method. The results showed that doses of the foliar fertilizer corresponding to field applications of at least 1 kg ha−1 had antifungal effects, which were significant (P < 0.01) above the concentration level of 3337 mg L−1, corresponding to 2 kg ha−1 application, against both fungal pathogens. A linear correlation (r2 > 0.95) was found between copper concentration and fungicide efficiency in the concentration range studied. The fungicide efficiency of the foliar fertilizer was lower than that of the commercially available copper-oxychloride fungicide. The sole use of the foliar nutrient tested probably cannot replace fungicide treatments. However, in addition to its plant nutrition effect, its antifungal properties should also be taken into consideration.

Background: Cage-free egg production methods are advancing in the European Union due to stringent housing regulations, animal welfare and consumer pressure. A changing production environment requests novel adaptation strategies of which the development of specific layer hybrids or strains is notably promising. Cage-free housing systems allow for a rather complete expression of social behaviour in laying hen populations; however, increasing stress, aggression and feather pecking are considered as major consequences. Objectives: This study aimed to detect a recently described SORCS2 polymorphism in newly developed Hungarian laying hen populations and observe potential associations with behavioural traits. Cage-free housing technologies with or without outdoor acces were also compared. Materials and Methods: Occurrence of behavioural traits were individually recorded for 119 hens. A novel PCR-RFLP method was developed and applied for SORCS2 genotyping with Rsal endonuclase. Results and Discussion: The SORCS2 polymorphism was present In the Hungarian populations, Callele frequencies varied between 75.1-85.5%. Homozygous TT genotype was the least prevalent across the three experimental populations with frequencies 2.2-4.2%. The experimental hybrid populations demonstrated different (p < 0.05) levels of aggression and activity related behavioural patterns. Homozygous CC animals showed more cases of aggressive behaviour compared to other genotypes. Feather pecking was more common In populations with outdoor access compared to the closed barn system (p < 0.05). The social behaviour of laying hens Is affected by many factors in an Immensely complex system. Selection efficiency on behaviour can be improved with a more profound knowledge on Its genetics.

Primary educational institutions aim to prepare children for further education and successful integration into the workforce. To consistently achieve this, they must meet the demands and expectations imposed by the constantly changing economic and social environments. Research shows that applying a constructive pedagogical approach is the most successful path, best fitting the expectations above. An essential and integral part of the educational process is the pedagogical supervision and evaluation procedure, aimed to assess performance and improve and support the learning process. A sad feature of the current system is that it needs to support individual learning paths sufficiently. Additionally, communication issues arising from the generational gap between teachers and students jeopardize the validity of the assessment tools. Educational institutions' advancement and continuous development can only be realized if the pedagogical supervision and evaluation system progresses and evolves to meet new challenges. Our research aims to develop such a method. We are working on creating a complex evaluation method supported by artificial intelligence (WTCAi – When The Child Ask with AI), which suggests appropriate items for assessment and evaluation to subject teachers. To achieve our main objective, we have planned to collect additional social background data from our students. Through analyzing these data, we hope to uncover numerous correlations that significantly influence the obtained data and results, thereby steering the development of the supervision-evaluation system in the most appropriate direction.

Gender composition in tourism management plays a critical role in shaping operational efficiency, decision-making processes, and industry growth—particularly in geosites and tourist-dependent regions. This study investigates global geospatial patterns in women’s involvement in tourism leadership, analyzing how gender dynamics influence managerial trends across various tourism sectors.Employing geospatial mapping and statistical techniques, the research draws on a comprehensive dataset that spans multiple countries and tourism contexts. It examines the regional variation in gender representation in managerial roles and its correlation with tourism performance, with a special focus on geosites—natural and cultural landmarks that attract high tourist traffic.The results reveal a marked geospatial disparity in the inclusion of women in tourism management. Regions with higher gender diversity in leadership demonstrate stronger tourism outcomes, including increased visitor engagement at geosites, more adaptive decision-making structures, and improved organizational performance. In contrast, regions with low female representation often lag in tourism growth and service quality. The study identifies cultural norms, institutional frameworks, and policy environments as key drivers of these regional differences. It underscores the importance of inclusive leadership in fostering innovation, resilience, and sustainable tourism development.The findings advocate for targeted policy measures and institutional reforms to promote gender-inclusive management structures. Ultimately, the study concludes that empowering women in tourism leadership not only addresses equity goals but also enhances sectoral dynamism, especially in geosite-rich regions—offering a strategic path toward more sustainable and resilient tourism industries.
