A COMPARATIVE STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF FOUR RADIOSONDE MODELS

In this study, we first performed a comprehensive structural analysis of four models of radiosondes (devices intended for use as the meteorological probe of a sounding balloon) manufactured by three different companies - Graw, Vaisala and Meteomodem. The radiosondes were disassembled for visual inspection and manual measurement, three-dimensional computed tomography images were taken of their inner structure, and the outer shapes of the radiosondes were scanned with a structured-light three-dimensional scanner. The structural properties of the radiosondes thus identified were then compared to one other, based on which the Meteomodem M10 was ranked as the least harmful in a potential collision. Next, the Meteomodem M10 radiosonde was used in collision tests with a heavy target and with a pumpkin model, in order to evaluate the possible damage caused by and to the radiosonde in different types of collisions.

The protagonist of my study, George Santayana, by idealizing love and sublimating sexual desires, has become the author of an aesthetics of existence elevated to literature and philosophy. He made self-cultivation and a life of satisfying desires a philosophical problem. His life's work is based on aesthetics, but it cannot be clearly placed within either Pragmatism or Platonism. My interpretation of Santayana from the perspective of the philosophy of desire takes the philosopher out of the conservative interpretative framework. His philosophy was centred on sensory perception, and although he sought spiritualism through his Platonism, his The Sense of Beauty is based on pleasure. His personal life and individual motivations are a vague background to his poetry and theoretical writings, and it is therefore necessary to view his creative world as a whole.

This is a report on the 13th European Conference on Precision Agriculture (ECPA) that took place between 18 and 22, July at the location of the University of Public Service in Budapest, Hungary. The theme of the Conference was the “Adoption of innovative precision agriculture technologies and solutions”. Due to the pandemic, the conference was a hybrid event. The two societies—the International Society of Precision Agriculture and the Hungarian Society of Precision Agriculture—had contributed to the event. The international conference was mainly attended by academic researchers, university instructors, company executives and farmers. The event comprised five plenary and 22 scientific sessions.

Testing Road Vehicle User Interfaces Concerning the Driver’s Cognitive Load

This paper investigates the usability of touch screens used in mass production road vehicles. Our goal is to provide a detailed comparison of conventional physical buttons and capacitive touch screens taking the human factor into account. The pilot test focuses on a specific Non-driving Related Task (NDRT): the control of the on-board climate system using a touch screen panel versus rotating knobs and push buttons. Psychological parameters, functionality, usability and, the ergonomics of In-Vehicle Information Systems (IVIS) were evaluated using a specific questionnaire, a system usability scale (SUS), workload assessment (NASA-TLX), and a physiological sensor system. The measurements are based on a wearable eye-tracker that provides fixation points of the driver’s gaze in order to detect distraction. The closed road used for the naturalistic driving study was provided by the ZalaZONE Test Track, Zalaegerszeg, Hungary. Objective and subjective results of the pilot study indicate that the control of touch screen panels causes higher visual, manual, and cognitive distraction than the use of physical buttons. The statistical analysis demonstrated that conventional techniques need to be complemented in order to better represent human behavior differences.

On the topological characterization of 3-D polyhedral microstructures

To characterize topologically the polycrystalline microstructure of single-phase alloys computer simulations are performed on 3-dimensional cellular models. These infinite periodic cellular systems are constructed from a finite set of space filling convex polyhedra (grains). It is shown that the appropriately selected topological shape factors can be successfully used for the quantitative characterization of computer-simulated microstructures of various types.

Fast tomographic reconstruction on parallel hardware

Tomographic reconstruction is the mathematical procedure of approximating a function f, based on the integrals of f along a set of line sections. The need for fast tomographic reconstruction arises for example in the challenging problem of real time control of some plasma parameters in a fusion reactor. In this paper, we present a fast algorithm for tomographic reconstruction. A good property of our approach is that it fits well to hardware with two levels of parallelism (e.g. a GPU cluster). We also propose an objective evaluation method for measuring the quality of reconstruction on real datasets where f is unknown. We will demonstrate that our algorithm is able to perform more than 50 000 reconstructions per second at reasonably good quality, running on a relatively cheap hardware. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

Optimization of 3D Printed Rapid Prototype Deep Drawing Tools for Automotive and Railway Sheet Material Testing

The main objective of this research is to identify optimal printing strategies and PLA (polylactic acid) filament materials to produce rapid prototype deep drawing tools. Additive 3D printing technologies have been applied for a long time to produce tools, but the research is unique in that it uses conventional and various reinforced PLA materials with conventional FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) printers. The advantage of this method is that PLA is easy to print and recycle and does not require expensive or special printers, this also gives the article its novelty. A further aim was to produce the tools using commercially available low-end printers. DX53D 0.8 mm thick body steel and AlMg3 2.5 mm thick sheet were the materials to be molded for the tests. The test tool was an Erichsen deep drawing punch. Tool wear was tested using the GOM ATOS measuring system, an optical coordinate measuring machine based on the DIC (Digital Image Correlation) principle, which is also popular in the automotive industry. The study aims to determine the 3D printing and material parameters that can safely produce a minimum batch of 100 parts.

Investigation of interlocking effect of crushed stone ballast during dynamic loading

The present paper deals with the experimental investigation of interlocking effect of crushed stone ballast material, assessing it as the relationship with the residual and dynamic stresses under the ballast layer during laboratory dynamic tests with the consideration of different boundary conditions. The laboratory experiments were executed with a scaled model of ballast under the sleeper. The measured pressure at the bottom surface of the ballast has two parts: dynamic and residual. The dynamic part depends on the external loading; the residual part remains after unloading. The measured residual stress was observed up to 3 times higher than the stress due to cyclic external loading. The relationship of the residual stress and interlocking effect to ballast particles angularity is analyzed. A simple interpretation of the distribution of residual stress is proposed, that depends on the measured cyclic stress and the elasticity of bounding walls. The study of interlocking effect of ballast could be potentially useful for many practical problems of railway track design as well as for the track maintenance issues.
