SMART CITY INDICATORS AND THE CONCEPTUAL PROBLEMS OF MEASURING SMART CITIES

Publication Name: Deturope

Publication Date: 2024-01-01

Volume: 16

Issue: 3

Page Range: 172-184

Description:

As the popularity of smart city research is increasing, the measurement of smartness became also a popular research topic. This is in accordance with the demand of the planners and project financing institutions for the success indicators, and with the observable tendency of new indicators for describing the settlements from the point of view of the quality of life, liveability, creativity, environment, social capital, development and many other fashionable research aspects of modern urban societies. Analyses through such indicators run the risk of taking a mechanistic, technocratic, superficial approach to complex urban systems, ignoring the complex causal relationships between urban subsystems and the interpretative and statistical uncertainties behind the indicators. Moreover, these composite or complex indicators merge very different basic indicators, often with low data quality and validity. This paper focuses on the uncertainties of smart city indicators, which are often used to form composite indicators that moreover form the basis for comparisons of smartness of cities. The transformation of a multi-indicator system into a one-dimensional metric scale is a highly questionable practice. Composite indicators, despite their popularity, are methodologically and conceptually highly problematic analytical tools for researchers and normative targets for policy makers.

Some basic questions of measurement and measurement theory

Publication Name: Statisztikai Szemle

Publication Date: 2024-01-01

Volume: 102

Issue: 2

Page Range: 107-157

Description:

Statistical analysis has a special relationship to measurement. For it, measurement and measurement theory not only provide the data on which analysis is based, but are also a source of important uncertainties in theoretical, methodological and applied research. A detailed presentation of measurement issues is therefore justified, together with the different approaches and the arguments behind them. After a careful discussion of the everyday and scientific meanings of measurement, the paper deals with the different meanings and conceptions of measurement, and then turn to the drastic change in meaning in social statistics in the mid-20th century. Then the theory of measurement scales, their criticism and proposals for expansion will be discussed, and finally some of the specific aspects of Likert-type statements that cannot be placed within the framework of measurement scales will be examined. One of the conclusions of the paper is that the Stevens system of measurement scales cannot be regarded as an adequate description of data types.

Housing price trends as a function of distance from Győr as a centre

Publication Name: Teruleti Statisztika

Publication Date: 2023-01-01

Volume: 63

Issue: 5

Page Range: 557-574

Description:

Examining the impact of spatial parameters is a central factor in research related to the analysis of housing prices, mostly involving data at the municipal level or higher. The present study builds on a less common approach, focusing on the analysis of the impact of a spatial parameter, distance from the centre, on property prices, furthermore, the empirical research uses aggregated municipal- level data based on the level of individual dwellings. On the one hand, the study aims to review and systematise the determinants of property prices, with a more detailed focus on previous studies of the impact of distance from the centre, and on the other hand, within the framework of empirical research, to examine the impact of distance from Győr as a centre on the supply price of detached houses.

THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE OF THE HUNGARIAN NUTS3 REGIONS BETWEEN 2010-2020

Publication Name: Deturope

Publication Date: 2023-01-01

Volume: 15

Issue: 2

Page Range: 85-108

Description:

The aim of the study is to analyse the changes in the socio-economic performance of Hungarian regions in the previous decade. The first part of the paper deals with the epistemological and methodological questions of the analysis of temporal change of spatial differences of various individual and composite socio-economic indicators. In the second part the empirical analysis will be conducted at the county level (NUTS 3 level, 20 spatial units), including a wide range of economic, social and demographic variables. The analysis is concerned with processes over an eleven-year period, 2010-2020. Our methodology combines the analysis of individual indicators with the use of complex aggregated indicators composed of several indicators. Some of the counties show higher level of socio-economic performance with more developed infrastructure, higher quality of education and stronger economic base. However, the picture is not entirely uniform, there are small, moderately positive and negative movements compared to the national average.

TIME-SPACE ASYMMETRY VERSUS TIME-SPACE SYMMETRY

Publication Name: Theoretical and Empirical Researches in Urban Management

Publication Date: 2022-11-01

Volume: 17

Issue: 4

Page Range: 68-81

Description:

The interpretation and the analysis of physical spaces is generated from the symmetry axiom which is valid in geographical spaces but might not be valid in other forms of spaces, the so called non-geographical ones. In the case of such spaces which can be expressed by time, network and cost, the opposite of symmetry can be found: distance asymmetry which means that the distance from one object to another and back are not equal. This research is motivated by the fact that while distance symmetry has been widely studied distance asymmetry has been not investigated in suburban areas of Győr. The purpose of the study is to give a typology of the sources of distance asymmetry, especially with regard to time-spaces, to demonstrate some real life practices and finally, to present.

Scientific and common concepts of probability and risk

Publication Name: Statisztikai Szemle

Publication Date: 2022-01-01

Volume: 100

Issue: 9

Page Range: 873-895

Description:

A koncepciók a tudomány történelmi fejlődése során is változtak, illetve többszöri újradefiniálásuk miatt azonos időpontban is több értelemben használatosak.

The Hungarian Statistical Review after 1990

Publication Name: Statisztikai Szemle

Publication Date: 2022-01-01

Volume: 100

Issue: 12

Page Range: 1095-1105

Description:

Three studies have been devoted to a partial history of the Hungarian Statistical Review and its publishing environment on the occasion of its 100th anniversary. In April, Balázs Horváth published a study on the period between 1923 and 1945, and in the September issue, Miklós Lakatos, the journal’s eighth editor-in-chief, wrote about the period between 1946 and 1989. The present study covers the period from 1990 to the present, showing the changes in the journal’s column structure and the emergence of changing research topics and statistical methods

The impact of a low-cost airline’s flights on local economy – On the example of Cluj-Napoca International Airport (Romania)

Publication Name: Regional Statistics

Publication Date: 2022-01-01

Volume: 12

Issue: 4

Page Range: 132-151

Description:

Aviation is paramount in contemporary medium and long-distance transport, and airports are essential junctions in the modern globalised economy. The presence of airports is determinative concerning local regions or areas, and a specific methodology demonstrates its impact on the economy. It allows estimating the direct, indirect, and consequent multiplicative effect of the presence of airports on employment and income more accurately. Thus, it numerically describes the economic significance of certain airports as well. It is not only about quantifying the significant impact of an airport on the local economy; it should also be the extent to which an airline’s presence impacts regional and local economic processes. Besides analysing general methodological issues concerning the impact analysis of airports, this study aims to evaluate the impact of a particular low-cost airline’s flights on the local economy. The basis of our study is the Cluj Avram Iancu International Airport (CLJ) of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and its dominant airline Wizz Air, which has a distinct impact because of its distance from large international airports. Thus, we can conclude that as a net result at the regional level, the presence of Wizz Air’s Cluj-Napoca flights generates over 4,000 person employment impact besides about 54 million euro income impact on the local economy

Time- spaces in Hungary

Publication Name: Forum Geografic

Publication Date: 2017-12-01

Volume: 16

Issue: 2

Page Range: 161-170

Description:

This paper firstly gives a general outline about the features of various spaces. Time spaces and cost spaces have non-metric characteristics, moreover, time spaces and cost spaces are not continuous. Therefore, topographic maps are not always an appropriate basis for cognitive information processing, the everyday behaviour and the study of spatial relationships. The paper demonstrates the differences between geographical space and time-spaces at two different scales, such as the road network time-space of Hungary and a district of the capital city Budapest. With the first example the rapidly changing Hungarian time-space during the last two decades can be vividly demonstrated, thanks to new motorway construction. The second example compares different types of space, as for example the difference between the time- space of a pedestrian and a vehicle.

Direct local economic impact of Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport

Publication Name: Teruleti Statisztika

Publication Date: 2017-01-01

Volume: 57

Issue: 1

Page Range: 76-93

Description:

Airports play a dominant role in today's longdistance transport and they also represent significant nodes of the modern globalised economy. By estimating direct and indirect impacts on employment and income, their importance can be characterized in quantifiable terms. This study aims to estimate the direct economic impacts of Budapest Liszt Ferenc Airport as a complex economic entity involving a number of companies that are legally separate but complementary to one another and operate in the Airport's area - after outlining the general issues related to the impact assessment of airports. The study addressed two years, 2009 and 2014, which made it possible to compare the circumstances before and after the termination of Malév.

Spatially aggregated data and variables in empirical analysis and model building for economics

Publication Name: Cybergeo

Publication Date: 2004-12-01

Volume: 2004

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: Unknown

Description:

A short review of the importance of spatial aggregation problem in general and specially in economics is followed by a typology of spatial analysis and statistical data from spatial aggregation viewpoint. The modifiable areal unit problem is divided into two parts. There are the scale and the zoning system effects, which are illustrated using Hungarian data. Spatial data aggregation creates the need for investigating the connection between the theory and data as well as the micro-macro dualism.
