ISO 14000 as a driver of sustainability: Exploring its alternative drivers beyond ISO 9000 standards

This study replicates and extends Corbett and Kirsch (2001) and Vastag (2004) using a new data set to investigate the drivers of ISO 14000 certification diffusions using decision tree analysis. The findings indicate that at the national level, ISO 14000 certification diffusions are influenced by factors other than ISO 9000 certification diffusions, such as the number of environmental treaties signed and ratified, industrial activities as a percentage of GDP, and GDP per capita, thus provides a range of managerial insights and enhances scholarly understanding of sustainability beyond the influence of ISO 9000. Future studies might extend the countries included in this study to see if the results are the same. Future research may include other factors like a country’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) indicators to better understand its commitment to sustainability, including environmental sustainability. The country’s culture may influence customers, investors, and other stakeholders’ knowledge and desire for sustainable practices and inspire firms to obtain ISO 14000 certifications. Since larger firms may seek ISO 14000 certification, future studies may evaluate the influence of the number of large firms in various countries as drivers of ISO certification diffusions.

Investigation of the fault tolerance of the PIM-SM IP multicast routing protocol for IPTV purposes

IPTV services should use an IP multicast solution for a network bandwidth efficient delivery of the media contents. PIM-SM is the most commonly used IP multicast routing protocol in IPTV systems. A short introduction to the operation of PIM-SM is given. Its fault tolerance is examined by experimenting on a mesh topology multicast test network built up by XORP routers in a virtualizcd environment. Different fault scenarios are played and different parameters of PIM-SM and OSPF are examined if they influence and how they influence the outage time of an IPTV service. A formal model is given for the service outage time of the IPTV service on the basis of the results of the experiments.

In this paper we present our initial experiments with the Discrete Bacterial Memetic Evolutionary Algorithm for solving the Cumulative Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem. The algorithm was tested on instances proposed in the literature. However our method was able to find the optimal solution for small (around 50 nodes) instances, but its convergence speed is low. In the last section some of our ideas to improve the performance of the algorithm were presented.

Numerical analysis of magnetized Ag-Fe3O4/VPO hybrid nanofluid flow over a spinning inclined disc with Thompson–Troian slip

Magnetized hybrid nanofluid (HNF) flow across a spinning inclined disc (SID) under Thompson–Troian slip (TTS) conditions has numerous applications. It can help improve the efficiency of cooling systems in electrical appliances by optimizing lubricant flow and energy transportation. In the current work, we have studied the HNF flow over a SID under multiple slip conditions in the form of partial differential equations (PDEs). The black iron oxide (Fe3O4) or Iron (II, III) oxide, along with silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs), is mixed with vacuum pump oil (VPO) for the preparation of HNF. The fluid flow is investigated in relation to nonlinear heat radiation, viscous dissipation, mixed convection, Joule heating, and irregular heat source/sink. The system of PDEs is first converted into a non-dimensional form of ODEs and then solved numerically through the BVP4c technique. It has been determined that the flow rate of HNF (Ag and Fe3O4/VPO) declines with the variation of Ag and Fe3O4 NPs in VPO, and the magnetic field parameter. The fluid temperature distribution declines with the influence of NPs' volume friction. By varying the NPs volume friction (Ag and Fe3O4-NPs) from 0.01 to 0.03, the coefficient of Nusselt number (energy transfer rate) increases up to 31.6401%. Physically, Ag and Fe3O4 NPs in VPO have a high thermal conductivity, which more efficiently boosts the energy transfer rate and is more applicable to the cooling systems and energy transportation.

Exploring the hub gene CERS6 as a therapeutic target in type 1 diabetes through a bioinformatics and network analyst approach

Insulin-producing β-cells are destroyed in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), a chronic autoimmune disease that results in complete insulin insufficiency and metabolic dysfunction. According to a survival study that used p values, some hub genes are important for predicting and diagnosing illness. Scientists have inferred medicines to identify possible therapies that interact with the identified hub genes. The GSE10586 gene expression dataset from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) was used for this investigation, which included 27 samples from 15 healthy controls and 12 diabetic patients. Normalization methods such as variance stabilization normalization (VSN) were used as part of the data pretreatment. A protein‒protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed, principal component analysis (PCA) was performed, heatmaps were created, and the Limma algorithm was used to analyze differential gene expression. Using DAVID v6.8 and KEGG pathway annotations, the functional enrichment of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) was evaluated. Furthermore, a computational study revealed CERS6 to be one of the potential hub genes. Four drugs, methotrexate, eliglustat, myriocin and statin, were the focus of further studies on the basis of predictions made via ChemSpider and PubChem database analysis. To determine the optimal binding positions of these drugs with CERS6, we used molecular docking techniques. The binding affinity of methotrexate was 8.48 kcal/mol, that of myriocin was 7.85 kcal/mol, that of eliglustat was − 6.62 kcal/mol, and that of serine was − 4.90 kcal/mol against the binding pocket’s active residues. To determine how consistently each drug interacted with the CERS6 protein over time, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were run. Throughout the simulation intervals, both medications were confirmed to be stable, with minor alterations in the CERS6 protein loop region. Therefore, the investigation of structure-based drug design has potential for identifying specific therapeutic targets. Ten hub genes were identified via network analysis of differentially expressed genes. These hub genes could serve as novel targets for T1DM detection, prognosis, and targeting. CERS6 exhibited the highest degree of interaction. Methotrexate, eliglustat, myriocin and statins were identified as potential drugs for CERS6. Overall, these findings provide valuable insights that could pave the way for new experimental strategies in T1DM therapy.

Anthropometric and Physiological Characteristics of Young Elite Hungarian Motocross Riders in Motocross Competitions

Background: Motocross riders’ performance is highly dependent on the characteristics of the motorcycles and the skills of the riders, and the actual environmental conditions. This study aims to describe the differences in anthropometric and physiological characteristics between internationally ranked adolescent males and nationally ranked motorcross (MX) peer competitors; Methods: Data obtained from young riders (n=14) were divided into internationally ranked G1 (n=5) and - nationally ranked G2 (n=9) young MX riders. We determined body composition and cardiorespiratory variables, and measured heart rate and movement-related data with Polar Team Pro system during the race; (3) Results: Blood lactate concentrations were evaluated before and after the race session. MX riders with an international ranking performed significantly better during both races (R1 and R2), which manifested itself in significantly shorter times per lap on average (difference for R1=14.8 s and for R2=16.7 s, respectively, p=0.017), more laps completed (G1 vs G2 approx.: 11.2: 9.9 laps for R1 and R2, p=0.019) and points scored (difference: R1=9.3 pts and R2=9.0 pts, p=0.014). There were no statistically significant differences in age between the two compared groups (p=0.559) and other anthropometric and physiological characteristics tested, with an exception of muscle mass percent (p<0.001); Conclusions: Current results showed that motocross probably places a heavy burden on riders, who need to be fit enough to maintain their position in the field.

Cross-country analysis of supply chain management drivers for small and medium-sized enterprises

Supply Chain Management (SCM) drivers are the key factors in successful SCM strategy implementation. SMEs with limited resources need to focus on the top drivers to improve performance and competitiveness. The paper explores which driver factors have the largest importance according to the opinion of the top managers of SMEs. Two developing countries were compared which have different supply chain environments mainly due to their geographical structure. Information from top managers of 105 Hungarian and 124 Indonesian SMEs was collected using an online questionnaire. The data was analysed using statistical methods. This study is the first to rank SCM drivers in a quantitative study comparing SMEs in different supply chain environments. The findings reveal that from 22 driver factors both countries perceive the same top 10, however in a different ranking order. Improvement of customer satisfaction and information dissemination are the top two drivers, which are highly correlated.

Control of Local Tax Payments: A Comparative Law Case Study

Tax payment is the basic form of fulfilling a tax obligation. It is included in the effective method of removing tax liabilities. As part of the control of payments of local taxes carried out by the tax authorities, it was found that an unauthorized employee of this authority unlawfully accepted payments of taxes that he did not pay to the account of the tax authority. A legal doubt has arisen in this respect as to whether the payment made in the above-mentioned circumstances is the payment of tax that gives rise to the removal of the tax liability. The main goal of the authors, within the research topic undertaken, is to verify the research hypothesis, according to which the taxpayer's transfer of funds to an unauthorized employee of a tax authority, confirmed by a receipt, cannot be considered as payment of the tax. The study analyzes the above-mentioned issues on the basis, above all, of the provisions of Polish tax law, which do not define the concept of tax payment, although they indicate the forms of payment. In order to get a broader perspective on the subject matter, the author analyzed selected regulations concerning the above-mentioned issues in Hungary and Ukraine.

Comparison of different geometry trees in fire simulation

Wildfire simulations can help to better understand the dynamics and effects of forest fires. The basis of wildfire simulation is the tree-burning simulation. In this paper, the fire simulation of 7 different geometry Hungarian trees in the case of arson is presented. It was observed that the trees were burned down fast. The maximum mass loss rate and maximum heat release rate were larger as the tree was larger. The largest intensity fire could be observed in the case of the smallest tree. The maximum temperature was higher in the case of a large crown diameter. The maximum aerosol reached high pollutant concentrations. In the case of large crown height, the maximum CO2 concentration was higher. The results presented in this paper can be the basis of the following forest fire simulations.
