Improving Flash Flood Hydrodynamic Simulations by Integrating Leaf Litter and Interception Processes in Steep-Sloped Natural Watersheds

More frequent high-intensity, short-duration rainfall events increase the risk of flash floods on steeply sloped watersheds. Where measured data are unavailable, numerical models emerge as valuable tools for predicting flash floods. Recent applications of various hydrological and hydrodynamic models to predict overland flow have highlighted the need for improved representations of the complex flow processes that are inherent in flash floods. This study aimed to identify an optimal modeling approach for characterizing leaf litter losses during flash floods. At a gauged watershed in the Hidegvíz Valley in Hungary, a physical-based model was calibrated using two distinct rainfall–runoff events. Two modeling methodologies were implemented, integrating canopy interception and leaf litter storage, to understand their contributions during flash flood events. The results from the model’s calibration demonstrated this approach’s effectiveness in determining the impact of leaf litter on steep-sloped watersheds. Soil parameters can estimate the behavior of leaf litter during flash flood events. In this study, hydraulic conductivity and initial water content emerged as critical factors for effective parametrization. The findings underscore the potential of a hydrodynamic model to explore the relationship between leaf litter and flash flood events, providing a framework for future studies in watershed management and risk-mitigation strategies.

In the 21st century tacit knowledge and its management has become a central theme of organizations and enterprises. Until the last decade, the possession of physical resources meant wealth and power in business. Labour, capital and natural resources were the key factors of production. Today, this trend is undeniably changing. In the rapidly evolving world of technology the only important factor providing long-term competitive advantage is the knowledge of the employees. Tacit knowledge is an invisible resource which has an enormous effect on the performance and success of a company, though it is personal, context-and cultures-pecific, besides hard to formalize and communicate. Tacit knowledgeincludes experiences, ideas, values and emotions and of course the factors of national culture. The main problem is that institutions are not aware of what kind of knowledge and information they possess. Hence, these assets are unorganized and not focused towards any objectives. The difficulties of sharing the lessons and experiences lead to wasting time and money on solving problems that have already been solved. That is why it is necessary to engage in knowledge management. As part of a wide-range research, we have examined which methods and procedures are used by Hungarian and Slovak companies to facilitate the retention of tacit knowledge of their employees in the organizational memory. How can the national culture influence the use of tacit knowledge management methods? The study involved 124 Hungarian and 122 Slovak companies and raised important questions in the scientific and organizationallife as the focus of our research. In our research we aspired to involve a wide range of enterprises, subsequently we examined small-and medium-size enterprises, multinational companies and organizations from both the for-profit and non-profit sectors. We conducted both qualitative and quantitative research because this is the most effective way of understanding the problem mentioned above.

A regularized Method of Fundamental Solutions without desingularization

Description:

Some regularized versions of the Method of Fundamental Solutions are investigated. The problem of singularity of the applied method is circumvented in various ways using truncated or modified fundamental solutions, or higher order fundamental solutions which are continuous at the origin. For pure Dirichlet problems, these techniques seem to be applicable without special additional tools. In the presence of Neumann boundary condition, however, they need some desingularization techniques to eliminate the appearing strong singularity. Using fundamental solutions concentrated to lines instead of points, the desingularization can be omitted. The method is illustrated via numerical examples. Copyright © 2013 Tech Science Press.

Appliances used in everyday life, like smart phones, notebooks; do-it-yourself machineries usually operate with battery instead of power supply. It means comfort to users however; they expose them to different dangers. In the last few years, several fire cases happened in connection with these appliances while charging and usage, which have driven the attention to the dangers of battery technology. Regarding the actuality of the topic, combustion products developing during the burning process of batteries with 1:1 ratio burning experiments were investigated, experiences and results from that are represented in this paper. The aim of the research is to call the attention to the flammability properties of lithium-ion and other batteries, the possible dangers and in case of fire to support the involved personnel.

Examination of Concrete Canvas under Quasi-Realistic Loading by Computed Tomography

The current paper concerns the investigation of CC (Concrete Canvas), a unique building material from the GCCM (geosynthetic cementitious composite mat) product group. The material is suitable for trench lining, trench paving, or even military construction activities, while the authors’ purpose is to investigate the application of the material to road and railway substructure improvement. This research was carried out to verify the material’s suitability for transport infrastructure and its beneficial effects. The authors’ previous study reported that the primary measurements were puncture, compression, and the parameters evaluated in four-point bending (laboratory) tests. However, based on the results, finite element modeling was not feasible because the testing of the composite material in a single layer did not provide an accurate indication. For this reason, the material characteristics required for modeling were investigated. A unique, novel testing procedure and assembly were performed, wherein the material was loaded under quasi-realistic conditions with a crushed stone ballast sample and other continuous particle size distribution samples in a closed polyethylene tube. In addition, the deformation of the material following deformed bonding was measured by computed tomography scanning, and the results were evaluated.

This study aims to elucidate the role of the Middle Corridor, also known as the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), in diversifying global trade routes and enhancing economic resilience amid geopolitical tensions. The paper examines the corridor’s impact on the economic and strategic interests of the countries it traverses, particularly Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and the European Union. The analysis employs a multidimensional approach that includes historical context analysis, comparative route analysis, geographic information system mapping, and statistical analysis. Data were collected from various sources, including the World Bank, the International Trade Centre, and trade and economic policy reports from Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and the European Union databases. Based on the methods used, the study compares the Middle Corridor with traditional trade routes such as the Northern Sea Route and the Suez Canal, highlighting its advantages and potential limitations. The Middle Corridor has emerged as a vital alternative, offering reduced transit times and enhanced trade security between Asia and Europe. The corridor has experienced a significant increase in cargo volume, reflecting its growing importance in international trade. Furthermore, the Middle Corridor contributes to the participating countries’ economic diversification and energy security, facilitating the movement of energy resources and other goods. The analysis revealed challenges such as political instability and infrastructural needs that could hinder the full potential of the Middle Corridor. Ultimately, the study underscores the strategic significance of the Trans-Caspian Route and the Zangezur Corridor in diversifying global trade routes and strengthening economic resilience in geopolitical tensions.

Investigation of the Effectiveness of the Robotic ReStore Soft Exoskeleton in the Development of Early Mobilization, Walking, and Coordination of Stroke Patients: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Medical robotics nowadays can prevent, treat, or alleviate numerous severe conditions, including the dire consequences of stroke. Our objective was to determine the effect of employing a robotic soft exoskeleton in therapy on the development of the early mobilization, gait, and coordination in stroke patients. The ReStore™ Soft Exo-Suit, a wearable exosuit developed by a leading company with exoskeleton technology, was utilized. It is a powered, lightweight device intended for use in stroke rehabilitation for people with lower limb disability. We performed a randomized clinical intervention, using a before–after trial design in a university hospital setting. A total of 48 patients with a history of stroke were included, of whom 39 were randomized and 30 completed the study. Interventions: Barthel Index and modified Rankin scale (mRS) patients were randomly assigned to a non-physical intervention control (n = 9 of 39 completed, 30 withdrew before baseline testing), or to a high-intensity agility program (15 sessions, 5 weeks, n = 30 completed). The main focus of assessment was on the Modified Rankin Scale. Additionally, we evaluated secondary factors including daily life functionality, five dimensions of health-related quality of life, the Beck depression inventory, the 6 min walk test (6MWT), the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and static balance (center of pressure). The Robot-Assisted Gait Therapy (ROB/RAGT) program led to significant improvements across various measures, including a 37% improvement in Barthel Index scores, a 56% increase in 10 m walking speed, and a 68% improvement in 6 min walking distance, as well as notable enhancements in balance and stability. Additionally, the intervention group demonstrated significant gains in all these aspects compared to the control group. In conclusion, the use of robotic therapy can be beneficial in stroke rehabilitation. These devices support the restoration and improvement of movement in various ways and contribute to restoring balance and stability.
