The use of biostimulant microalgae to influence the growth and development of ornamental plants

The article discusses the use of biostimulant microalgae, known for their bioactive compounds. Understanding the positive impacts of biostimulants is essential for future applications. Research conducted in the Department of Plant Sciences at the Széchenyi István University has revealed that algae produce plant hormones and possess beneficial properties that influence the water, soil and plant systems. The effects of microalgae on various ornamental plants are being studied with a focus on improving root and general plant development. The methodology involves testing different algae extracts in ornamental plants in controlled environments. Data collection includes measuring plant height, leaf and bud numbers, chlorophyll content and other plant parameters through laboratory and destructive tests. The results indicate positive changes in plant parameters after treatments with biostimulant microalgae. In conclusion, biostimulant microalgae offer a promising and eco-friendly alternative to synthetic chemicals in the cultivation of ornamental plants. Continued research and innovation in this field is crucial to realise the full potential of biostimulants in sustainable agriculture.

Thermal impact assessment with hydrodynamics and transport modeling

While the number of installed geothermal heat pump systems is rising legislation is not prepared to address the issues concerning thermal impact. The aim of this paper is to model the effects of geothermal heat pump systems installed to shallow geothermal reservoirs in sedimentary formation based on the results of a real system in order to show the magnitude of the thermal affected zone. The system examined is a standalone geothermal heat pump with a production and an injection well-being able to produce a maximum of 3.4 m3/h groundwater. The thermal impact determined by simulation was 35 m for the standalone system. Two scenarios were considered to define the impact of two neighboring open-loop systems on each other. The results show that if two systems are to be installed on the same reservoir the minimum distance should be 55 m. That indicates that in case of designing systems installed to similar hydrogeological environment should consider the change in the water table and increased thermally affected zone if other groundwater heat pumps are in the area.

The Impact of Pitch Error on the Dynamics and Transmission Error of Gear Drives

Gear whine noise is governed not only by intentional microgeometry modifications but also by unavoidable pitch (indexing) deviation. This study presents a workflow that couples a tooth-resolved surface scan with a calibrated pitch-deviation table, both imported into a multibody dynamics (MBD) model built in MSC Adams View. Three operating scenarios were evaluated—ideal geometry, measured microgeometry without pitch error, and measured microgeometry with pitch error—at a nominal speed of 1000 r min−1. Time domain analysis shows that integrating the pitch table increases the mean transmission error (TE) by almost an order of magnitude and introduces a distinct 16.66 Hz shaft order tone. When the measured tooth topologies are added, peak-to-peak TE nearly doubles, revealing a non-linear interaction between spacing deviation and local flank shape. Frequency domain results reproduce the expected mesh-frequency side bands, validating the mapping of the pitch table into the solver. The combined method therefore provides a more faithful digital twin for predicting tonal noise and demonstrates why indexing tolerances must be considered alongside profile relief during gear design optimization.

Occurrence and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface water of the Raba River, Hungary

The objective of this study was to investigate the concentration level and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface water of the Raba River; the largest Danube tributary in Hungary. A total of 54 water samples were collected in the period of 2008-2011 and analysed for PAHs by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) method. The total PAH concentrations (sum of the concentrations of 17 individual PAH compounds) ranged from 41 to 437 ng/L with the mean value of 111 ± 69.4 ng/L. Phenanthrene and naphthalene were the dominant species in the surface water. Using TEF approaches on the mean concentration PAH data, benzo[a]pyrene and dibenz[ah]anthracene contributed the highest carcinogenic exposure equivalent. A selected number of concentration ratios of specific PAH compounds were calculated to evaluate the possible sources of PAH contamination. The ratios reflected a pattern of pyrogenic input as a major source of PAHs. The comparison of the total PAH concentrations observed for Raba River with other surface waters of the world confirmed that the Raba River could not be regarded as a contaminated river according to the levels of PAHs. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Cost Efficiency Evaluation of Ceramic Fiber, Glass Fiber, and Basalt Fiber-Reinforced Asphalt Mixtures

The performance of SBS (Styrene Butadiene Styrene) modified asphalt mixtures can be enhanced through the addition of fibers including basalt, ceramic, and glass. This study investigates whether a reduced SBS content of 3%, combined with 0.3% fiber reinforcement can match or exceed the performance of a traditional 7% SBS mixture. A comparative analysis was carried out by examining both performance efficiency and life cycle costs across ceramic, basalt, and glass fiber-reinforced mixtures. Maintenance requirements for each scenario were factored into the life cycle analysis. To assess structural integrity, 3D finite element simulations were conducted using the Burger’s logit model while focusing on fatigue and rutting damage. Findings indicate that basalt and ceramic fiber mixtures deliver better asphalt mixtures, thereby outperforming the 7% SBS mix by requiring fewer maintenance interventions. However, due to the higher cost of ceramic fiber mixtures at 831 Eur/m3, basalt fiber emerges as the more cost-effective option, achieving a performance efficiency gain of 20% with reduced costs at 532 Eur/m3. Among the fiber-reinforced variants, glass fiber showed the least improvement in performance, with a difference in 11% and 13% when compared to ceramic fiber and basal fiber, respectively.

Robust reconfigurable control for in-wheel electric vehicles

The paper presents a fault tolerant reconfigurable control method for vehicles driven by four in-wheel electric motors and a steering system. The aim of the design is to realize robust velocity and road trajectory tracking even under challenging driving conditions or actuator failures. The vehicle is operated solely with the in-wheel motors, thus steering intervention is only applied in case of skidding or a failure of an electric motor. The reconfigurable control is realized based on Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) framework, using the specific characteristics of the in-wheel motors of fast and accurate torque control. The operation of the designed control system is demonstrated in a CarSim simulation environment.

Synthesis and Techno-Economic Analysis of Pyrolysis-Oil-Based Biorefineries Using P-Graph

The production of renewable fuels and chemicals is a critical component of global strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In this regard, pyrolysis oil obtained from biomass comprises hundreds of chemical compounds, thus rendering it a good precursor for manufacturing a variety of fuel products of commercial interest. Despite the large number of contributions describing the products' extraction, upgrading, and potential refining schemes, no bio-oil refinery is currently in operation. The main challenge in building a bio-oil refinery lies in the lack of an economically viable process configuration. Systematic studies comparing alternative refinery concepts, or configurations, are needed to identify the most promising configuration. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to use process graph (P-graph) methodology for the synthesis of pyrolysis oil refineries. In particular, this work shows the effectiveness of P-graph methodology in simultaneously calculating the profitability of various biorefinery designs by using data reported in the literature and providing information on how the introduction of new technologies to the database will impact the formation of profitable biorefinery concepts. Our work demonstrates a methodology for the addition of new unit operations to the database generated from the literature. The addition of a centrifuge for water extraction and a wet oxidation system for acetic acid production resulted in the generation of 330 biorefinery configurations, seven of which have a profitability ranging from $1,650 to $23,666/h (USD) with acetic acid and levoglucosan as the main products, respectively. This demonstrates that P-graph methodology is useful for discovering optimum techno-economic scenarios that may otherwise be overlooked.
