Taylor series method with numerical derivatives for initial value problems

Description:

The Taylor series method is one of the earliest analytic-numeric algorithms for approximate solution of initial value problems for ordinary differential equations. The main idea of the rehabilitation of these algorithms is based on the approximate calculation of higher derivatives using well-known technique for the partial differential equations. In some cases such algorithms will be much more complicated than a R-K methods, because it will require more function evaluation than well-known classical algorithms. However these evaluations can be accomplished fully parallel and the coefficients of truncated Taylor series can be calculated with matrix-vector operations. For large systems these operations suit for the parallel computers. The approximate solution is given as a piecewise polynomial function defined on the subintervals of the whole interval and the local error of this solution at the interior points of the subinterval is less than that one at the end point. This property offers different facility for adaptive error control. This paper describes several above-mentioned algorithms and examines its consistency and stability properties. It demonstrates some numerical test results for stiff systems herewith we attempt to prove the efficiency of these new-old algorithms.

Mathematical modeling of automotive supply chain networks

The aim of this research is to set up a possible model for describing automotive supply chain networks. The work to be presented analyses the real-world environment and its changes in a broader view. The research provides the extension of the mathematical modeling domain, accordingly. The paper studies the basic relational structure of automotive supply chain, where the methodology is determined by the classical business strategic levels. This is done by combining the theories of network and theories for traffic systems. We uncover the hidden relational parallelism between the automotive supply chain and positive systems, complex networks and find that the industry network shows some similar scale-free structural properties indicating the existence of a typical dependence and dominance structure with complex dynamical behavior.

Chatbot as a Corporate Communication Tool: Best Practice of a Hungarian HR Services Company

The advent of cutting-edge technologies has changed the way humans communicate. Corporate communication also has to face the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities stemming from the evolution of infocommunication technologies. The paper aims to present the best practice of a Hungarian certified company providing full HR services regarding the use of a chatbot software application as a corporate communication tool. The company applies its award-winning chatbot to communicate with its temporary workforce in five different languages. The paper is a single-case study based on secondary and primary research. The empirical research is carried out by means of an in-depth interview with the examined company’s representative to get details about the successful application of the chatbot software. The results reveal that the company was able to successfully integrate a rule-based chatbot into its corporate communications. The use of the chatbot has brought a number of benefits, e.g. time-and cost-effectiveness, satisfaction from both the temporary workforce and the internal staff. The paper concludes that even the most basic type of chatbot software can be applied effectively if the users are informed and well-prepared in advance, meanwhile the knowledge base of the chatbot software is appropriately determined and constantly updated.

Exploring disparities in the generation of food waste from a spatial and sustainability perspective

In the near future, food production will encounter numerous challenges. The world's population, per capita intake of calories, protein, and cereals is growing, and expected to continue increasing in the future. According to the World Resources Institute, feeding 9-10 billion people by 2050 will require a 70% increase in food calorie compared to 2006 levels. The expansion of crop and livestock production, the increasing use of fertilisers and pesticides at global level, and the growing adoption of precision farming methods may not be appropriate in the light of problems such as soil degradation, the impact of climate change on yields, the depletion of fish stocks and the reduction of arable land per capita in certain areas. Mitigation of food waste can be a possible way to sustainable food supply but it alone cannot solve the problem. The paper focuses on examining disparities in the generation of food waste from a spatial and sustainability perspective within EU-countries. Data related to food waste and various environmental, social and economic indicators are collected for EU countries. Correlation between these parameters is investigated to find possible connections. Cluster analysis is applied to food waste data to find the groups of countries with similar characteristics. The distribution of environmental, economical, and social parameters is calculated for these groups, and statistical methods are applied to investigate their differences.

Ranking of beef cattle sires by their breeding value on progeny performance

The objective of this study was to rank Limousin sires by their different breeding values based on the weaning weight of their progeny. 205-day weaning weight record of altogether 18746 purebred and crossbred calves sired by breeding bulls of the mentioned breed were used for the estimation. Calves were belonging to three different groups by their genotype. Three different BLUP animal models were used for the estimation. According the results the direct heritability (h2) estimates of 205-day weight ranged between 0.49 and 0.59, while that of the maternal heritabilityd(h2) between m 0.24 and 0.45. The estimated breeding value of the given sires differed by the genotype (purebred or crossbred) of their progeny calves and the method of estimation. Also, there were differences in the rank of the sires depending on the genotype of their progeny, as well as the estimation methods.

The fermentability of agricultural raw materials by probiotic bacterial strains

The objective of this study was to evaluate the fermentability of various agricultural raw materials using a novel Liquid State Fermentation (LSF) technique. The formulations were based on protein-rich plant ingredients, such as sunflower, wheat, and rapeseed, addressing the persistent issue of byproducts in the food industry by seeking alternative utilization methods. While the LSF method has been used in pork production, it remains a new technology in the poultry sector. Distiller’s Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS) and Corn-Gluten Feed (CGF) were chosen based on previous experiments. These mixtures were enhanced by inoculation with various bacterial strains to produce fermented feeds with probiotic properties. The bacteria played a crucial role in the entire fermentation process. The starters included a commercial culture and fresh sweet whey of a semi-hard cheese. Additionally, selected bacterial strains were used based on previous research and literature data. Solaris model bioreactor system were utilized to produce the fermented feeds. This approach aims to promote a healthier gastrointestinal system in farm animals, protecting them against pathogenic bacteria. The fermentation process was designed to generate beneficial molecules such as enzymes, organic acids, and bacteriocins, further supporting the health benefits of the final product. This is significant because such feed can reduce the need for antibiotics in farm animal breeding, aligning with the EU’s stance on minimizing antibiotic usage. Throughout our research, we meticulously monitored the fermentation process, gathering data for a comprehensive comparison. Our analysis focused on changes in pH, the microbiological and hygienic properties of the feed, and the production of organic acids in the fermenting mixtures. The results consistently showed a decrease in pH values after 24 h of fermentation. DDGS with selected strains exhibited the highest LAB counts at 9.89 log10 CFU/cm3, whereas the combination of CGF and whey produced the highest lactic acid concentration at 28.86 mg/ml. These promising results warrant further investigation through animal trials.

Improving system reliability in optical networks by failure localization using evolutionary optimization

This paper proposes a novel approach for cost-effective link failure localization in optical networks in order to improve the reliability of telecommunication systems. In such failure localization problems the optical network is usually represented by a graph, where the task is to form connected edge sets, so-called monitoring trails (m-trails), in a way that the failure of a link causes the failure of such a combination of m-trails, which unambiguously identifies the failed link. Every m-trail consumes a given amount of resources (like bandwidth, detectors, amplifiers, etc.). Thus, operators of optical network may prefer a set of paths, whose paths can be established in an easy and cost-effective way, while minimizing the interference with the route of the existing demands, i.e. may maximize the revenue. In this paper, unlike most existing techniques dealing with failure localization in this context, the presently proposed method considers a predefined set of paths in the graph as m-trails. This way the task can also be formulated as a special Set Covering Problem (SCP), whose general form is a frequently used formulation in a certain type of operations research problems (e.g. resource assignment). Since for the SCP task evolutionary algorithms, like Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), has been successfully applied in the operations research field, in this work the failure localization task is solved by using ACO on the SCP formulation of the described covering problem, which is a rather unique combination of approaches of different fields (telecommunication, operations research and evolutionary computation) placing our investigation in the multi-field scope of complex systems. © 2013 IEEE.

A Novel Approach to the Operationalization of Corporate Local Embeddedness: Cultural Perspectives on Narrativesas Indicators

Corporate embeddedness, the extent to which companies anchor themselves in a local context through political, economic, academic, social, andenvironmental connections, remains a key area of research in social and regional sciences. Due to the limited availability of secondary data on corporate relationships, measurement methods often rely on qualitative data. Corporate communication, especially CEO letters in annual reports, is a frequently neglected secondary data source that has grown in significance in meeting stakeholder expectations and providing insights into corporate strategies and operations. Despite the growing scholarly interest in CEO letters, little is known about embeddedness narratives and the cultural factors that influence them. Through an analysis of the cultural variations in embeddedness narratives found in CEO letters from the fashion and cosmetics industries, this study suggests a novel approach to operationalising corporate localembeddedness. The focus on these sectors is justified by the significant variations in embeddedness orientations across industries and the accessibility of relevant data. The study finds that CEO letters can serve as a complementary data source for assessing corporate embeddedness, as they reveal both local and global orientations. Using software-based content analysis, key themes and keywords were identified along the Quintuple Helix model, providing a structured approach to analysing embeddedness. The results highlight cultural influences, with reactive cultures emphasising social sustainability, while academic engagement challenges existing assumptions. In addition to reflecting corporate strategies, CEO letters offer insights into sectoral characteristics. However, more qualitative research is still required to fully comprehend a company’s level of embedding.

Status of Agricultural Irrigation in Hungary

Some prediction models indicate climate change will have a more pronounced impact on Hungary than previously anticipated. Traditionally, Hungarian agriculture is based on dryland farming, with irrigated farming practiced in a few areas. Land degradation is a significant concern. However, the loss of arable land due to water scarcity could be more widespread. One potential solution is to irrigate, which could maintain soil fertility for decades. Utilizing modern irrigation techniques is a crucial approach to making irrigation as sustainable as possible while ensuring yield and quality. This study aims to provide an authentic picture of irrigation in Hungary, past and present. It also aims to provide suggestions for the near future, drawing on examples from abroad.
