Investigating Slope Stability of Geocell-Reinforced Railway Embankments

The current paper aims to investigate stability of side’s slops of geocell-reinforced railway embankments. For this purpose, firstly a set of six 1:20 scaled models including a reference embankment and geocell-reinforced embankments was constructed in a loading chamber and their load-settlement behaviour was assessed. In the next stage, 3D FEM models of the embankments were developed and the relevant results were verified against the laboratory test outcomes. In continue, on the basis of verified models, the scaled up railway embankments were simulated and the real train loading applied to the models. In this matter, a wide-ranging parametric study was performed on the embankment soil properties ranged from poor (ST1) to high strength (ST5) materials, geocell elasticity modulus (E), number of geocell layers (N) and their vertical location in the embankment body (U) to achieve a minimum embankment sliding safety factor (SF) of 1.5. Outcomes indicate that geocell opening size, stiffness and the placement position play an important role where the concern is to stabilize the embankments' sides slopes. It was found that middle of the embankment was the best position of geocell layers. Elasticity modulus of 1400 MPa and opening size of 245*210 mm were also determined as the optimum for geocell layers.

Case Report: From disordered eating to an eating disorder—a case study of an orienteering athlete with anorexia nervosa and the shortcomings of the multidisciplinary approach

This case study explores the transition from disordered eating (DE) to an eating disorder (ED) in a 23-year-old female orienteer. Despite her talent as an athlete, her eating habits and training practices led to significant health concerns. After following an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet for 3 years, she exhibited symptoms of DE, including low energy intake (1,200 kcal/day), low body weight (50.1 kg, BMI: 16.9), and amenorrhea. Her condition deteriorated over 2 years, resulting in a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa (AN) by February 2023. During the treatment process, the athlete utilized a multidisciplinary approach that included dietitians, psychologists, and physicians. Despite achieving some initial progress, including a slight increase in body weight and the return of menstruation in July 2022, her health declined after psychological consultations were halted, leading to a further decrease in body fat and persistent low serum iron levels. This case highlights the importance of continuous monitoring, timely intervention, and a coordinated multidisciplinary team in addressing DE and ED in athletes. It also highlights the significance of effective communication among healthcare professionals and the need for comprehensive treatment strategies that include psychological, nutritional, and medical support. This study highlights the significance of early detection, suitable intervention, and the prevention of long-term health complications, such as decreased bone density and cardiovascular issues, in athletes with DE and ED.

With the rapidly evolving digital landscape, the metaverse presents itself as a promising tool for achieving commercial pursuits in the tourism industry. We apply the presence theory to examine how the industry can leverage the remarkable features of the metaverse to create memorable experiences for tourists at brand destinations–a unique identification or memorable experience associated with a destination, preferably induced by highly immersive services facilitated through the metaverse. The need to discern the impact of metaverse technologies on tourists’ psychological well-being led us to adopt a design science methodology, which enabled us to yield significant findings through a mixed-methods analysis comprising four studies. Firstly, we employ the grounded method approach, utilising think-aloud protocol interviews to elicit various themes. Secondly, we conducted a bibliographic study in RStudio software to extract key insights from 119 Scopus journals. Thirdly, using a structural topic modelling approach, we explored various topics. Finally, we employed the interpretive structural modelling (ISM) approach to establish a cause-and-effect relationship between variables of crucial interest. The significant finding of our study is that the metaverse can be effectively utilised as a highly assistive tool for curating niche experiences for tourists.

The reemergence of primitive reflexes (PRs) in older adults is associated with dementia and cognitive impairment. Recent experimental work suggests gentle sensorimotor exercises may halt or reverse PR's inverse development. These findings question whether physical activity (PA) is negatively related to PRs. This study aimed to test this relationship in 52 older adults aged 66 and over who were volunteers from seven Hungarian nursing homes. They were tested individually using the Senior Test, hand-grip strength, 13 PRs, and PA levels using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. Apart from upper and lower body flexibility, all functional fitness indices and PA were negatively related to the number of PRs. A bootstrapped multiple hierarchical linear regression revealed that only PA was a statistically significant predictor (p < 0.001) of the PRs, accounting for 41% of the variance. This study is the first to demonstrate a robust negative relationship between PA and PRs and a weak negative association with hand-grip strength and four elements of functionality in older adults. The implications of the results could be significant for developing interventions to prevent or delay PRs' inverse development, which is associated with adverse mental health in older adults.

Filtering and contrast enhancement on subtracted direct digital angiograms

This paper presents the results of a research related to medical image subtraction algorithms. The selected area is of direct digital X-Ray angiography, where subtraction algorithms are the basis of most acquisition and reviewing protocols. The goal of this research is to analyze the currently existing image subtraction algorithms and to propose a new approach based on the experienced limitations, respectively to develop a new imaging technique that allows both contrast agent and radiation dose reduction. The enhancement of the subtraction algorithms is targeted by two means: a) noise reduction on image frames, b) identification of contrast agent injected regions. Both aspects will be studied based on the analysis of the spatio-temporal signal variation that image pixel intensities represent, therefore the resulting algorithm can not be used real time during image acquisition, but as a post processing technique during review. The temporal variation of pixel intensities was then analyzed and a patter check was followed to identify pixels being part of a contrast agent injected region. This information was used to highlight regions of interest and to increase the contrast in poorly injected areas.

Script-Based Material and Geometrical Modeling of Steel–Concrete Composite Connections for Comprehensive Analysis Under Varied Configurations

The behavior of steel–concrete composite structures is significantly influenced by the efficiency of the shear connections that link the two materials. This research examines the performance of stud shear connectors, with an emphasis on analyzing the effect of different geometric design parameters. A computational model was created utilizing Python 3.13 to enable thorough digital monitoring of the influence of these parameters on the structural performance of composite connections. Developed within the ABAQUS framework, the model integrates geometric nonlinearity and the Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) approach to achieve detailed simulation of structural behavior. Essential design aspects, including stud diameter, stud height, head dimensions, and spacing in both longitudinal and transverse directions, were analyzed. The Python-based parametric model allows for easy modification of design parameters, ensuring efficiency and minimizing modeling errors. The significance of stud diameter changes was analyzed in accordance with Eurocode standards and previous studies. It was found that stud length has a reduced effect on structural performance, particularly when considering the concrete properties used in bridge construction, where compressive failure of the concrete zone is more critical at lower concrete strengths. Additional factors, such as stud head dimensions, were investigated but were found to have minimal effect on the behavior of steel–concrete composite connections. Longitudinal stud spacing emerged as a critical factor influencing structural performance, with optimal results achieved at a spacing of 13d. Spacings of 2d, 3d, and 4d demonstrated overlapping effects, leading to significant performance reductions, as indicated by comparisons of ultimate load and force–displacement responses. For transverse spacing, closer stud arrangements proved effective in reducing the likelihood of slip at the steel–concrete interface, enhancing composite action, and lowering stress concentrations. Additionally, reducing the transverse distance between studs allowed for the use of more shear connectors, increasing redundancy and enhancing performance, especially with grouped-stud connectors (GSCs).

This paper aims to test and validate a model of internal factors influencing the capacity expansion decisions of family businesses, thereby helping these organizations better understand their decision-making processes. The identified internal factors include socio-emotional wealth, intergenerational cooperation, and a heterogeneous top management team. The study focuses on family businesses in the Portuguese food industry and employs both qualitative and quantitative methods. A structured online questionnaire, completed by 150 respondents, was analyzed using SPSS. Additionally, in-depth interviews were conducted to confirm the quantitative findings and provide a broader conceptual perspective. The results indicate that both qualitative and quantitative analyses support the proposed model.

A New Extensible Feature Matching Model for Corrosion Defects Based on Consecutive In-Line Inspections and Data Clustering

Featured Application: The proposed framework introduces a new feature matching approach for corroded pipelines based on in-line inspections and data clustering, contributing to the broader field of pipeline integrity management. The effectiveness of this framework suggests potential for application in other domains that benefit from spatial feature matching. Corrosion is considered a leading cause of failure in pipeline systems. Therefore, frequent inspection and monitoring are essential to maintain structural integrity. Feature matching based on in-line inspections (ILIs) aligns corrosion data across inspections, facilitating the observation of corrosion progression. Nonetheless, the uncertainties of inspection tools and corrosion processes present in ILI data influence feature matching accuracy. This study proposes a new extensible feature matching model based on consecutive ILIs and data clustering. By dynamically segmenting the data into spatially localized clusters, this framework enables feature matching of isolated pairs and merging defects, as well as facilitating more precise localized transformations. Moreover, a new clustering technique—directional epsilon neighborhood clustering (DENC)—is proposed. DENC utilizes spatial graph structures and directional proximity thresholds to address the directional variability in ILI data while effectively identifying outliers. The model is evaluated on six pipeline segments with varying ILI data complexities, achieving high recall and precision of 91.5% and 98.0%, respectively. In comparison to exclusively point matching models, this work demonstrates significant improvements in terms of accuracy, stability, and managing the spatial variability and interactions of adjacent defects. These advancements establish a new framework for automated feature matching and contribute to enhanced pipeline integrity management.
