This paper presents some European initiatives developed within the Socrates Programme in order to support people with disabilities to use the new technologies. The disadvantages of the existing software designed for people with visual deficiencies together with some criteria that have to be considered in developing virtual learning applications for visually impaired are pointed out. The paper includes a proposal for improvement of the existing software for searching information and communication by people with disabilities, the first version of the FORThSIGHT Programme, elaborated in the framework of one Grundtvig 2 Learning Partnership.

In the original publication [1], there was a mistake in the legend for Figure 1 and Figure 4. A map legend can be explained either by text within the figure (where space permits) or by numbering the conventional signs within the figure, and explaining them below the figure (where space is more limited). In Figure 1 and Figure 4, the second method of explanation was initially used (by means of the numbers explained under the figure), but later, according to the indications received from the referents, the numbers in the figures were replaced by their explanations (according to the version uploaded on 3 September 2023). Due to an unfortunate error, in the version uploaded on 6 September 2023, Figure 1 and Figure 4 were uploaded with the conventional numbered signs in the legend, but without the explanation of the numbers below the figure, making the figures much more difficult to explain. Therefore, we request that these two figures be replaced with their variant, where the legend is explained in the text, as indicated by the referents. The correct legend appears below. The authors state that the scientific conclusions are unaffected. This correction was approved by the Academic Editor. The original publication has also been updated.

Unveiling latent topics in the interplay of Circular Economy and Energy Transition: A Topic Modelling approach

The Circular Economy (CE) and Energy Transition (ET) are crucial solutions for addressing global environmental challenges caused by linear economic models and fossil-based energy systems. Both approaches focus on enhancing energy and resource efficiency while minimizing environmental impacts. This Topic Modelling-based review identifies latent topics within the CE and ET academic literature, tackling the challenge of subjectivity found in traditional reviews. Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), six topics are identified. Each topic sheds light on how crucial elements – such as economic and social sustainability, technological innovation, material management and electrification, waste management, local development, and regulatory policies – are interconnected with CE and ET. Together, these elements contribute to a more cohesive and effective transition. The study emphasizes the need for coordinated strategies and targeted policies to ensure that CE and ET not only coexist but also complement and strengthen each other. This holistic approach is vital for fostering a sustainable future that balances economic growth with environmental conservation.

Description of Ixodes lanigeri sp. nov., a new hard tick species (Acari, Ixodidae) collected from mouse-eared bats (Vespertilionidae, Myotis) in Vietnam

Historically, for more than one and a half centuries, only one so-called “long-legged bat tick” species, i.e., Ixodes vespertilionis Koch was known to science. However, during the past decade, it was recognized on a molecular basis that long-legged ixodid ticks associated with bats may represent at least six species. Of these, until recently, five have been morphologically described. In this study, Ixodes ticks were collected from two Myotis species in southeastern Asia, Vietnam. Based on the morphological and molecular characteristics of the female, nymph and larva, Ixodes lanigeri Hornok, sp. nov. is described here. The male is unknown. Like other members of the Ixodes ariadnae complex, I. lanigeri Hornok apparently shows a preference for vesper bats as its typical hosts. In this context, host-association and geographical separation may explain the evolutionary divergence of I. lanigeri Hornok from its closest relative occurring on Murina hilgendorfi Peters in East Asia, Japan, because no Myotis or Murina spp. have overlapping distribution between Vietnam and the main islands of Japan. On the other hand, supposing that (similarly to I. ariadnae) I. lanigeri Hornok probably occurs on other myotine bats and knowing that several Myotis species indigenous in Vietnam have a broad geographical range in southern and southeastern Asia, the new tick species most likely has a widespread distribution in this area.

Comparison of Five Rehabilitation Interventions for Acute Ischemic Stroke: A Randomized Trial

Background: Comparative efficacy of rehabilitation interventions in persons with acute ischemic stroke (PwS) is limited. This randomized trial assessed the immediate and lasting effects of five interventions on clinical and mobility outcomes in 75 PwS. Methods: Five days after stroke, 75 PwS were randomized into five groups: physical therapy (CON, standard care, once daily); walking with a soft robotic exoskeleton (ROB, once daily); agility exergaming once (EXE1, once daily) or twice daily (EXE2, twice daily); and combined EXE1+ROB in two daily sessions. Interventions were performed 5 days per week for 3 weeks. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, post-intervention, and after 5 weeks of detraining. Results: Modified Rankin Scale (primary outcome) and Barthel Index showed no changes. EXE1, EXE2, ROB, and EXE1+ROB outperformed standard care (CON) in five secondary outcomes (Berg balance scale, 10m walking speed, 6-min walk test with/without robot, standing balance), with effects sustained after 5 weeks. Dose effects (EXE1 vs. EXE2) were minimal, while EXE1+ROB showed additive effects in 6-min walk tests. Conclusions: These novel comparative data expand evidence-based options for therapists to design individualized rehabilitation plans for PwS. Further confirmation is needed.

Artificial neural network for modeling and investigating the effects of forming tool characteristics on the accuracy and formability of thin aluminum alloy blanks when using SPIF

Incremental Sheet Forming (ISF) has attracted attention due to its flexibility as far as its forming process and complexity in the deformation mode are concerned. Single Point Incremental Forming (SPIF) is one of the major types of ISF, which also constitutes the simplest type of ISF. If sufficient quality and accuracy without defects are desired, for the production of an ISF component, optimal parameters of the ISF process should be selected. In order to do that, an initial prediction of formability and geometric accuracy helps researchers select proper parameters when forming components using SPIF. In this process, selected parameters are tool materials and shapes. As evidenced by earlier studies, multiple forming tests with different process parameters have been conducted to experimentally explore such parameters when using SPIF. With regard to the range of these parameters, in the scope of this study, the influence of tool material, tool shape, tool-end corner radius, and tool surface roughness (Ra/Rz) were investigated experimentally on SPIF components: the studied factors include the formability and geometric accuracy of formed parts. In order to produce a well-established study, an appropriate modeling tool was needed. To this end, with the help of adopting the data collected from 108 components formed with the help of SPIF, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was used to explore and determine proper materials and the geometry of forming tools: thus, ANN was applied to predict the formability and geometric accuracy as output. Process parameters were used as input data for the created ANN relying on actual values obtained from experimental components. In addition, an analytical equation was generated for each output based on the extracted weight and bias of the best network prediction. Compared to the experimental approach, analytical equations enable the researcher to estimate parameter values within a relatively short time and in a practicable way. Also, an estimate of Relative Importance (RI) of SPIF parameters (generated with the help of the partitioning weight method) concerning the expected output is also presented in the study. One of the key findings is that tool characteristics play an essential role in all predictions and fundamentally impact the final products.

On weighted possibilistic informational coefficient of correlation

In their previous works Fullér et al. introduced the notions of weighted possibilistic correlation coefficient and correlation ratio as measures of dependence between possibility distributions (fuzzy numbers). In this paper we introduce a new measure of strength of dependence between marginal possibility distributions, which is based on the informational coefficient of correlation. We will show some examples that demonstrate some good properties of the proposed measure.

Event driven program model is very good tool to write discrete control programs based on sequential logic, but to create combinational logic based controls is more problematic. The paper presents one implementation of event driven software model of combination logic networks. The paper first reviews the basics of event-driven systems. Greater part of article presents the mathematical basic and architecture of event-driven combinational logic and one software implementation of the model.
