Description:

Storing hydrogen resources underground can accelerate the transition to renewable energy, facilitate energy supply security, and the adoption and expansion of hydrogen energy, a clean energy source. The selection of sustainable underground hydrogen storage systems is a critical research topic for addressing environmental issues caused using fossil fuels. However, decision-makers still lack a consensus-based and sustainability-oriented framework that can comparatively evaluate alternative underground hydrogen storage geological formations under economic, environmental, social, and technical uncertainties, which constitutes a critical barrier to large-scale hydrogen deployment. This issue has become more prominent as fossil-based fuel reserves are gradually decreasing worldwide. In contrast, researchers and practitioners lack a consensus on which underground storage method is most suitable for economical, safe, and efficient hydrogen storage. If this problem is not addressed correctly and reasonable solutions are not obtained, continued dependence on fossil fuels may persist. Alternatively, other renewable energy sources with relatively lower efficiency and performance may be adopted. In both cases, significant delays in achieving the global sustainability goal are likely to occur. We propose an integrated fuzzy decision-making framework (F-WENSLO & Dombi-Bonferroni & F-ARTASI) to address this selection problem under uncertainty. The proposed framework integrates fuzzy WENSLO (Weights by ENvelope and SLOpe) for robust sustainability-based criteria weighting, the Dombi–Bonferroni aggregation operator to model interdependencies among criteria explicitly, and the fuzzy ARTASI (Alternative Ranking Technique based on Adaptive Standardized Intervals) method to provide flexible and stable ranking of geological alternatives beyond rigid distance-based approaches. Key advantages of the proposed model include producing reliable and consistent solutions that accurately reflect real-world conditions for selecting sustainable underground hydrogen storage systems. The results revealed that C14 (job creation and employment opportunities) (0.0603) is the most influential criterion in selecting the most suitable storage system. In addition, salt caverns with an Ωi of 10,5167 have achieved the highest score, placing them in the first position, and it is the most suitable and advantageous underground hydrogen storage option. The suggested decision-making tool can yield reliable and robust solutions in real-world conditions, enabling the planning of infrastructure design for hydrogen energy systems that incorporate sustainability dimensions. In that regard, the developed model possesses the characteristics of an efficient and practical roadmap that can guide policymakers and decision-makers in transitioning from fossil-based energy sources to renewable energy sources. It has been implemented to evaluate underground geological formations that could facilitate the storage of hydrogen energy underground, serving as a case study. The reliability and robustness of this tool have been verified through extensive validation tests.

Morphological, phenological and molecular diversity of woodland grape (Vitis sylvestris gmel.) genotypes from the szigetkÖz, hungary

From 2012 to 2015 32 woodland grape genotypes were collected from the Szigetköz and the Fertő-Hanság National Park, Hungary, and ex-situ preserved in the gene bank of the NARIC Research Institute for Viticulture and Enology in Badacsony, Hungary. Phenological development stages based on the BBCH scale and ampelographic data according to 30 OIV descriptors were recorded. Isozyme and SSR analyses were carried out in the preserved genotypes, 18 Vitis vinifera varieties and 20 rootstocks were also analysed for comparison. Summarizing the results it can be estab-lished, that the ex-situ preserved genotypes are true-to-type woodland grapes, belonging to Vitis sylvestris Gmel. var. typica. Further quest, ex-situ and in-situ preservation and analyses of the Vitis sylvestris Gmel. germplasm in Hungary are needed.

The Impact of Pitch Error on the Dynamics and Transmission Error of Gear Drives

Gear whine noise is governed not only by intentional microgeometry modifications but also by unavoidable pitch (indexing) deviation. This study presents a workflow that couples a tooth-resolved surface scan with a calibrated pitch-deviation table, both imported into a multibody dynamics (MBD) model built in MSC Adams View. Three operating scenarios were evaluated—ideal geometry, measured microgeometry without pitch error, and measured microgeometry with pitch error—at a nominal speed of 1000 r min−1. Time domain analysis shows that integrating the pitch table increases the mean transmission error (TE) by almost an order of magnitude and introduces a distinct 16.66 Hz shaft order tone. When the measured tooth topologies are added, peak-to-peak TE nearly doubles, revealing a non-linear interaction between spacing deviation and local flank shape. Frequency domain results reproduce the expected mesh-frequency side bands, validating the mapping of the pitch table into the solver. The combined method therefore provides a more faithful digital twin for predicting tonal noise and demonstrates why indexing tolerances must be considered alongside profile relief during gear design optimization.

Analysis of beliefs about COVID-19 vaccines among the adult Hungarian population from a health communication perspective

Introduction: The COVID-19 vaccination uptake rate was lower among the Hungarian population compared to the European Union average. Among residents of deprived settlements in Hungary, vaccine uptake was by 38.2% lower than the national average. A major obstacle to the vaccination program was public mistrust. Objective: To explore the beliefs of the population regarding COVID-19 vaccination and to identify mass media sources used for obtaining information about the pandemic. Method: The analyzed data came from a cross-sectional online survey, which was conducted from November 15 to 26, 2022. The effective sample size of the anonymous data collection was 1222 Hungarian adults. Questions regarding the refusal of COVID-19 vaccination, sociodemographic variables, 5 positive and 5 negative attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccination and COVID-19, and questions regarding mass media used for obtaining information were involved in this study. Frequentist statistical methods and Hornik-Woolf method were applied. Results: A successful increase in the agreement with the statement "The vaccinated also protect the health of those around them" could have achieved the highest increase in the vaccination rate among the Hungarian adult population. Respondents identified television, online news portals, government online communication, and radio as primary sources of information about COVID-19. Significantly more vaccine refusers sought information on closed Facebook pages and on YouTube compared to vaccine acceptors. Conclusion: In line with international findings, emphasizing community interest could have been an effective general approach in the promotion of COVID-19 vaccination in Hungary. For the preparation of future mass-vaccination campaigns, complex health communication research, planning and testing are recommended.

The Role of Territorial Capital in Urban Renewal in a Non-core Central European City

The concept of territorial capital, presented by the authors as an alternative to exogenous, FDI-driven economic restructuring strategies, has fertilised regional development policy thinking in multiple ways. Triggering reflections on the bottom-up reconceptualisation of regional policy, it has a particular salience in peripheral or lagging regions due to its potential to reverse deeply-entrenched core-periphery relations. The paper discusses the concept of territorial capital with a view to its policy embeddedness and academic valorisation. The structure of the paper is as follows. The first section presents the theoretical antecedents and conceptual evolution of the notion of territorial capital. This is followed by a brief discussion of the relevance of territorial capital in non-core or peripheral Central European contexts. The concluding section seeks to identify the main obstacles to collaborative and integrated strategy-making relying on the territorial capital approach in the case study city of Pécs, demonstrating its crucial absence from post-2000 top-down regional development programmes.

EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2023 - COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE HUNGARIAN CANDIDATE CITIES

A Hungarian city will be designated as the European Capital of Culture in 2023. The series of programmes are designed to show the multi-colour European culture, accordingly, the cultural values and cultural dimensions of the cities are in the focus. Several cities take part in the competition in the customary way by submitting their tender documentation within the framework of a pre-selection procedure. Győr, Veszprém and Debrecen proved to be the most probable candidate cities to win in Hungary, they were chosen to enter the second round of the selection procedure. Although the focus of intense attention usually falls on the cultural programmes planned for the project year, the period of the competition itself is also regarded an exciting phase of the project, since this is the period when candidate cities are expected to give an account of their plans, moreover, they are also expected to outline their projected development conception in the field of culture and their cultural potentials. The present study aims to analyse and confront the plans of three Hungarian cities that were selected to enter the second round of the competition and, consequently, it also intends to explore the visions, the strengths and weaknesses of the Hungarian cities of outstanding cultural ambitions mainly via factors denoted in figures. Today we know, that the winning city became Veszprém. Although based on the quantitative data we saw the other two cities as more likely to win, due to a number of qualitative as well as subjective factors, the city of Veszprém proved to be better during the selection procedure. We do not want to override the decision; we only outline an analytical framework for the cultural comparison of our culturally ambitious Hungarian cities.

Assessing the impact of household energy efficiency and renewable energy developments on energy poverty reduction

The paper aims to develop and adapt an econometric model for assessing and forecasting the impact of household energy efficiency and renewable energy deployment on reducing energy poverty in Ukraine. Due to the lack of updated statistical data after 2022 caused by the war, the adapted model was tested using pre-war data from the State Statistics Service of Ukraine and the World Bank for 2002-2021. As access to some prewar datasets was also restricted for security reasons in Ukraine, proxy indicators were applied, allowing adaptation to limited information conditions. The modeling results showed that a 1,000 USD increase in GDP per capita reduces the share of the population living below the national poverty line and, accordingly, the energy-poor population, by 3%. Conversely, a 1% increase in gross capital formation raises the energy poverty level by 0.5%, indicating no direct impact of investment in physical capital, including expenses on energy-efficiency measures, on household welfare. Household expenditures on utilities and the share of renewable energy in total energy consumption were found to be statistically insignificant. The study confirms that household income remains the dominant determinant of energy poverty, while improvements in energy efficiency and renewable energy development play supportive but not yet decisive roles. These findings highlight the need to integrate social and energy policies to raise household incomes, improve access to renewable technologies, and promote energy efficiency measures. The developed model offers a tool for enhancing state policies to alleviate energy poverty under wartime constraints and in post-war recovery.
