Identification of ovine-associated staphylococci by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry

The objective of this study was to use matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation–time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) for the identification of ovine-associated staphylococci. Presumptive Staphylococcus isolates were recovered from ovine udder surface (US), individual raw milk, bulk tank milk, and cheese samples and were characterised by conventional phenotypic methods. A total of 69 bacterial isolates were further confirmed by MALDI-TOF MS. Forty-two (60.9%) of 69 isolates were successfully identified on genus and species level. Two thirds (n 5 28) of the 42 identified isolates were shown to be Staphylococcus spp. These 28 staphylococcal isolates formed two clusters, one consisting of 22 Staphylococcus aureus strains and the other composed of 6 non-aureus staphylococci, including S. simulans (n 5 3), S. auricularis, S. equorum, and S. haemolyticus. MALDI-TOF MS has proven to be a reliable tool for the identification of staphylococci from raw sheep’s milk, especially bulk tank milk; however, currently it appears to be less useful for the identification of bacterial isolates originating from ovine US samples. This is the first study to evaluate the applicability of MALDI-TOF MS for identification of Staphylococcus spp. in ovine raw milk, cheese, and US samples in Hungary.

Overall imperfection method for flexure and compression steel beam-columns. The principles and applications of the overall (global) imperfection method (OIM) for beam-columns are presented in this paper. The buckling resistance of a beam-column member is determined by the resistance of its critical cross-section taking into account second-order effect of the eigenform equivalent initial imperfection. The maximum amplitude of this initial imperfection, in the shape of elastic buckling mode, is determined from fundamental cases, which are simply fork supported members with uniform cross-section under uniformly distributed normal force or bending moment. The standardized buckling resistance of the fundamental cases is based on theoretical and empirical background. The proposed global imperfection method is adequate for computer-aided design method using advanced elastic beam-column finite element method including the warping behavior of the cross section. The accuracy of the presented method is illustrated step-by-step with numerical examples.

The current business environment characterized by high uncertainty, volatility, and stiff situation of competitiveness that is evident in almost every sector has increased the importance of workplace innovation for contemporary businesses. In this regard, a considerable attention in realizing employees of an organization as a source of innovation is not evident from the existing literature. In this aspect, the current study is an attempt to foster workplace innovation through employees in the SME sector of an emerging economy. In doing so, the authors propose that corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives of an SME, along with workplace autonomy, are helpful in creating an environment at the workplace that fosters innovative employee behavior (IEB). Furthermore, the current study also extends the boundary condition of the theory of self-determination by arguing that this theory provides a comprehensive framework to explain employees’ motivation for workplace innovation. The data of the current survey was obtained from the SME sector situated in two large cities of a developing country through a self-administered questionnaire which was then analyzed through structural-equation-modeling (SEM) using the AMOS software. The results confirmed that CSR directly relates to IEB and workplace autonomy mediates this relationship. The study also discusses the implications of this survey for theory and practice.

Comparative study on credibility measures of type-2 and type-1 fuzzy variables and their application to a multi-objective profit transportation problem via goal programming

In real world applications supply, demand and transportation costs per unit of the quantities in multi-objective transportation problems may be hardly specified accurately because of the changing economic and environmental conditions. It is also significant that the time required for transportation should be minimized. In this paper, we have presented three reduction methods for a type-2 triangular fuzzy variable (T2TrFV) by adopting the critical value (CV). Three generalized expected values (optimistic, CV and pessimistic) are derived for T2TrFVs with some special cases. Then a multi-objective profit transportation problem (MOPTP) with fixed charge (FC) cost has been formulated and solved in type-2 fuzzy environment. Unit transportation costs, FC, selling prices, unit transport times, loading and unloading times, total supply capacities and demands are all considered as triangular Type-2 fuzzy numbers. The MOPTP has been converted into a single objective by using the goal programming technique and the weighted sum method. The deterministic model is then solved using the Generalized Reduced Gradient method Lingo 14.0. Numerical experiments with some sensitivity analysis are illustrated the application and effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

In the area of mechanical, aerospace, chemical and civil engineering the solution of partial differential equations (PDEs) has been one of the most important problems of mathematics for a long time. In this field, one of the most exciting areas is the simulation of fluid flow, which involves for example problems of air, sea and land vehicle motion. In this paper a CNNUM based solver of 2D inviscid, adiabatic, compressible fluids will be presented. The governing equations are solved by using firstand second-order numerical methods. Unfortunately the necessity of the coupled multi-layered computational structure with nonlinear, space-variant templates does not make it possible to utilize the huge computing power of the analog CNN-UM chips. To improve the performance of our solution emulated digital CNN-UM implemented on FPGA has been used. Properties of the implemented specialized architecture is examined in terms of area, speed and accuracy. ©2008 IEEE.

A novel unified approach to invariance conditions for a linear dynamical system

In this paper, we propose a novel, simple, and unified approach to explore sufficient and necessary conditions, i.e., invariance conditions, under which four classic families of convex sets, namely, polyhedra, polyhedral cones, ellipsoids, and Lorenz cones, are invariant sets for a linear discrete or continuous dynamical system. For discrete dynamical systems, we use the Theorems of Alternatives, i.e., Farkas lemma and S-lemma, to obtain simple and general proofs to derive invariance conditions. This novel method establishes a solid connection between optimization theory and dynamical system. Also, using the S-lemma allows us to extend invariance conditions to any set represented by a quadratic inequality. Such sets include nonconvex and unbounded sets. For continuous dynamical systems, we use the forward or backward Euler method to obtain the corresponding discrete dynamical systems while preserves invariance. This enables us to develop a novel and elementary method to derive invariance conditions for continuous dynamical systems by using the ones for the corresponding discrete systems. Finally, some numerical examples are presented to illustrate these invariance conditions.

Global challenges and the ‘farm to fork’ strategies of the European Green Deal: Blessing or curse

The article evaluates how well the goals of the European Green Deal are justified, especially considering the risks to energy and food security arising from the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. We agree with the objectives of the European Green Agreement as a whole, but whether some of the objectives which feature in the EASAC study can be achieved by 2030 is questionable, and the description of the tools necessary to achieve the objectives is incomplete. Among other things, there is hardly any mention of the role played by precision farming with digitalization, which is a revolutionary change from an ecological and economic point of view, in reducing the use of synthetic inputs, in regenerating the original state of the soil, in reducing GHG emissions, thus in increasing biodiversity, and at the same time in intensifying production, and finally in expanding the application of biotechnology. We examine these areas in our analysis. Some of the objectives of the EASAC study to be achieved by 2030 are subject to debate, and the description of the information and communication conditions necessary to achieve the objectives is incomplete. The IoT (Internet of Things) responds to global and local challenges: it integrates the precision technologies, WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks), artificial intelligence, mobile field (Smart Small Robots) and remote data loggers (UAVs: Unmanned Air Vehicles and satellites), Big Data, and cloud computing. Consequently, decision support is increasingly developing into unmanned decision making. IoT (Internet of Things) is the basis of “Farm to Fork” and “Lab to Field” monitoring approaches. This article evaluates the implementation of European Green Agreement objectives in light of energy and food security risks arising from the Russia-Ukraine conflict. While overall support for the agreement exists, the feasibility of certain EASAC study objectives by 2030 is called into question due to insufficient tools specifications. Notably absent is the emphasis on precision farming with digitalization, which is a transformative ecological and economic practice. Our analyses look into its function in reducing synthetic inputs, soil regeneration, GHG emission reduction, biodiversity enhancement, production intensification, and biotechnology development. Debates surround EASAC study objectives for 2030, despite limited information and communication restrictions. The Internet of Things (IoT) arises as a solution, combining precision technology, WSNs (wireless sensor networks), AI (artificial intelligence), smart small robots, UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), satellites, big data, and cloud computing. As a result, decision support turns toward unmanned decision-making, with IoT laying the groundwork for “Farm to Fork” and “Lab to Field” monitoring systems.

Functional and environmental impacts of the use of reclaimed asphalt pavement materials and of foamed asphalt

Environmental safety related to asphalt mixing plants has been a growing concern due to the high temperature of asphalt mixture production resulting in a lot of energy used and much air pollutants released. Asphalt mixtures with foamed bitumen and RAP can reduce this problem. This paper deals with their functional and environmental effects. In the paper, it was introduced that the hot mix asphalt mixtures bound by foamed bitumen and containing RAP materials provides a good workability, in comparison to “traditional” hot mix asphalt mixtures. However, producing foamed bitumen needs special technological steps before using it as asphalt binder. The use of RAP materials reduces environmental harm and construction costs, besides it preserves the limited resources of stone, sand and gravel.

In today's world, more and more people have been thinking whether to put their family or their career to the foreground as there does not seem to exist any balance between the two aspects today. The reconciliation of work and family life can be seen today not only as an individual, but rather, as an organizational problem. After all, an employee who is tense, exhausted or tired because of his/her responsibilities at home will not be effective at work and vice versa. It is no wonder, then, that several Hungarian organizations are putting more and more emphasis on solving these occasional problems.
