Gamification in for-profit organisations: A mapping study

Description:

This study reviews prevailing trends in “for-profit” business-related gamification. It examines the current literature, focusing on gamification elements, industries and variables that is of interest to researchers in different business environments. A systematic mapping approach was applied to this study. Articles were selected from different databases in a two-step screening process, subject to sets of inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total of 25 articles were further for: (1) represented industries, (2) orientation of the gamified system, (3) types of implementation, (4) gamification elements analysed, (5) impact on companies, and (6) company variables analysed. Results confirmed that the number of empirical studies on gamification in for-profit organisations is growing. Researchers have placed greater emphasis on analysing customer-related gamification environments than on employee-oriented gamification. This finding is consistent with the prevailing trend of increasing demand from practitioners to gamify customer-related processes. This is likely due to the potential for higher positive impact on the performance of companies. Most frequently deployed gamification elements are badges, rewards, and leader boards. The literature suggests that over all, gamification has a positive effect on various company variables, such as motivation, engagement of employees, brand loyalty, and customer experience. This paper highlights the particular areas of business-related gamification that have already been examined and possible future directions.

Structured Representation of Industrial Robot Data for Augmented Reality Applications: A Unified Approach

Industrial robots generate diverse types of data, such as position, orientation, coordinate system definitions, tooling information, and safety zone configurations. Handling these heterogeneous datasets uniformly is challenging, especially when integrating data from multiple robot manufacturers within augmented reality (AR) environments. This research introduces a unified data structure that encapsulates robot-specific data along with supplementary metadata, including source identifiers, unique data identifiers, data types, original orientation formats, status data, and timestamps. The developed data model, validated by JSON Schema, ensures consistent interpretation and ease of integration into AR visualization environments.

Framework to embed machine learning algorithms in P-graph: Communication from the chemical process perspectives

Description:

P-graph is a popularly used framework for process network synthesis (PNS) and network topological optimization. This short communication introduces a Python interface for P-graph to serve as a linkage to modern programming ecosystems. This allows for a wider application of the fast and efficient P-graph solver, to provide structural and topological enumeration in numerous fields. The proposed framework allows for more integrative usage in Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, process system engineering, chemical engineering and chemometrics. Large and repetitive topologies can also be automated using the new programming interface, saving time and effort in modelling. This short communication serves as a demonstration of the newly developed open-sourced P-graph interface.

Gender-specific pathways regarding the outcomes of a cyberbullying youth education program

Introduction: Marked gender differences have been identified in cyberbullying perpetration and victimization in adolescence. Age and phenotypic traits, including impulsivity and problematic internet use may mediate the association between gender and cyberbullying intervention outcomes. This study thus aimed to explore gender differences and the potential mediating role of age, impulsivity and problematic internet use regarding the outcomes of an elementary school cyberbullying program. Methods: The peer-led STAnD project shapes students' attitudes towards cyberbullying, and promotes help-seeking behaviors. Baseline sample consisted of 933 respondents (51.3% females, mean age = 11.25, sd = 1.64), and after a 42.55% drop-out, 536 remained in the sample for 6-month follow-up. Four primary outcome measures represented protective factors against cyberbullying. Results: Three of the intervention outcomes – change in 1) helpline knowledge, 2) empathy towards the victims of cyberbullying, and 3) risk perception regarding online hazards - were best predicted by gender. A gender-specific path analysis model indicated that higher amount of time spent online might put a barrier to changes in risk awareness among females and in help-seeking willingness among males. Conclusions: Future cyberbullying programs may design separate interventions for adolescent boys and girls with different emphasis placed on empathy training, or the barriers to help-seeking.

Comparative study of plasma, laser, and flame induced activation of HDPE liner surfaces of type 4 hydrogen vessels

In our study, we compare the surface modifications of coarse HDPE surface induced by atmospheric air plasma, CO2 laser, and flame treatments. An order of WCA decrease of air plasma>flame>CO2 laser methods was detected. The improvement in adhesion strength measured 5 days after the activations followed the same trend. FT-IR and EDS proved that different oxygen compounds were formed after treatments, resulting in increased polar component of the total surface energy. Flame activation showed a saturation character regarding the O-moiety. Hydrophobic recovery showed a linear behavior, with a larger decreasing slope for the polar component than the total surface energy. Plasma treatments induced higher recovery rate; however, restore was not complete here either. The effects of the different CO2 irradiation intensities were nonlinear; SEM and roughness measurements revealed surface ablation or structure formation on the different samples, while after plasma and flame treatment a hilly microtexture appeared. With different mechanisms and intensities, all the tested methods are suitable for increasing the adhesion strength on HDPE surfaces.

Influence of microbial inoculants on co-composting of lignocellulosic crop residues with farm animal manure: A review

The rapidly developing agro-industry generates huge amounts of lignocellulosic crop residues and animal manure worldwide. Although co-composting represents a promising and cost-effective method to treat various agricultural wastes simultaneously, poor composting efficiency prolongs total completion time and deteriorates the quality of the final product. However, supplementation of the feedstock with beneficial microorganisms can mitigate these negative effects by facilitating the decomposition of recalcitrant materials, enhancing microbial enzyme activity, and promoting maturation and humus formation during the composting process. Nevertheless, the influence of microbial inoculation may vary greatly depending on certain factors, such as start-up parameters, structure of the feedstock, time of inoculation, and composition of the microbial cultures used. The purpose of this contribution is to review recent developments in co-composting procedures involving different lignocellulosic crop residues and farm animal manure combined with microbial inoculation strategies. To evaluate the effectiveness of microbial additives, the results reported in a large number of peer-reviewed articles were compared in terms of composting process parameters (i.e., temperature, microbial activity, total organic carbon and nitrogen contents, decomposition rate of lignocellulose fractions, etc.) and compost characteristics (humification, C/N ratio, macronutrient content, and germination index). Most studies confirmed that the use of microbial amendments in the co-composting process is an efficient way to facilitate biodegradation and improve the sustainable management of agricultural wastes. Overall, this review paper provides insights into various inoculation techniques, identifies the limitations and current challenges of co-composting, especially with microbial inoculation, and recommends areas for further research in this field.

Conventional and nonconventional extraction techniques for optimal extraction processes of rosmarinic acid from six Lamiaceae plants as determined by HPLC-DAD measurement

The goal of this study was to improve the extraction efficiency of rosmarinic acid (RA) from Lamiaceae herbs (lemon balm, peppermint, oregano, rosemary, sage, and thyme) using various extraction techniques (maceration with stirring, MACS; heat reflux, HRE; and microwave-assisted extraction, MAE) and extraction conditions (solvent acidity, solvent type, extraction time and temperature). The RA content was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection (HPLC-DAD) under test conditions. Our results showed that extraction with acidified aqueous ethanol (EtOH-H2O-HCl, 70:29:1, v/v/v) was the best choice for the recovery of RA compared to other solvent systems. Further study suggested the following optimal extraction times for the different techniques: 120 min at 25 °C with MACS, 15 min at boiling point with HRE, and 5 min at 50 °C and 80 °C with MAE. Based on our results, we demonstrated that by careful adjustment of the extraction conditions, it is possible to set up a single extraction protocol to extract RA from different plants.

Measurement and analysis of vibration levels in stacked small package shipments in delivery vans as a function of free movement space

In recent years there has been a very significant increase in parcel delivery shipments all over the world. Moreover, this mode of delivery, in some cases, is facing a very intensive flow of goods, such as in annual festive seasons or, for instance, in situations like COVID-19 when personal purchase of goods is strictly limited in malls. This often means that delivery vehicles operate at almost full capacity, and many same or different kinds of packages are therefore stacked in small delivery vehicles. In this study, we measured and analyzed the vibration levels that occur in smaller stacks of packages in parcel delivery shipments, paying particular attention to those circumstances such as stacking layers and free movement spaces that can affect the vibration in different layers of packages. The goal of this paper was to provide information about the vibration levels that occur in smaller stacks of packages that are not unitized and fixed, as is common in parcel transportation. The recorded vibration events were analyzed in terms of power spectral densities (PSDs) and supplied with statistical data of acceleration events to provide an understanding of the variability of intensity. Based on the results of this study, PSD spectra were developed for various free movement conditions, as well as spectra for each layer in the stacked parcel package shipment. The results showed that the vibration level increases in the stacked load upwards and with an increase of free space of possible movement. The results of this study can be used to simulate the measured vibration conditions in laboratory tests conducted on courier express parcel shipments.

Surface Activation of Polyamide 6 Nanocomposites by Atmospheric Plasma: Wettability and Chemical Changes for Type IV Pressure Vessel Liners

This study explores how atmospheric-pressure plasma treatments can modify the surface properties of polyamide 6 (PA6) and its nanocomposites reinforced with organomodified montmorillonite (OMMT), materials developed as potential liners for Type IV composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) designed for hydrogen storage. Four material compositions were examined: neat PA6 and composites containing 1, 2.5, 5, and 10 wt.% OMMT. Two different plasma systems—a piezoelectric plasma brush and a rotary plasma source—were used to activate the surfaces, and their effects were evaluated using water contact angle (WCA) measurements and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Both plasma treatments effectively increased the wettability of the tested materials, but the rotary plasma consistently produced the lowest WCA values across all compositions, reaching as low as 21° for neat PA6. These findings suggest that the rotary plasma’s higher power and dynamic exposure enhance the formation of polar functional groups and may increase micro-scale roughness, leading to improved surface activation. FTIR results confirmed the appearance and growth of oxidized functional groups, particularly carbonyl and hydroxyl species, which are linked to the increased surface polarity and hydrophilicity. Time-dependent contact angle tests revealed that the effects of plasma treatment were not permanent. Over several hours, the contact angles gradually increased, returning close to untreated values.
