Description:

Hydroflight is a watersport where the user utilizes a waterjet-propelled backpack to fly over water. These backpacks are usually powered by purpose-built equipment but can also be propelled by personal watercraft. To have full control over movement during hydroflight, the user needs to adjust the throttle of the watercraft, which is commonly performed by converting the system to remote-controlled operation. However, care should be taken during conversion to ensure safe operation and avoid harm to the user. This paper presents a failure analysis of sudden safety mode activation on a personal watercraft converted to remote control for hydroflight applications, as well as actions taken to avoid full shutdown in the case of communication loss, without compromising user safety.

Dynamics of Railway Wheelsets with a Nonsmooth Contact Force Model

The dynamics of a railway wheelset is investigated, focusing on the effect of the contact force models. For large values of creep velocities, the Coulomb model can be used as an asymptotic approximation of wheel-rail contact forces. Then, we get a nonsmooth dynamical system with codimension-2 discontinuities. At the discontinuity of the phase space, the so-called limit directions can be found, which correspond to the possible transitions between slipping and rolling. By this analysis, the nonsmooth model can complement the usual linear creep force model from the opposite direction, and we can explore more details about the qualitative behaviour of the wheelset.

Result of modern digital age, the concept of Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) are becoming more relevant in today's academic world. Personalization is needed to make a product or service or an educational environment more endearing to the target audience, and this is especially true for VR Learning. The paper examines the learning effectiveness connecting to the personalized learning content with the participation of 90 students. The personalized VR education was based on an examination of students' learning type and attribute. In the experiment, the same curricula is compared when executed using audio, visual or reading type of learning content. To determine the learning style of students, the Kolb's learning test were applied. Tests show that the users were able to complete the tests with at least 20% effectiveness, if the learning materials fits their learning type.

The Water Framework Directive aims at reaching the good ecological status of the surface and ground water bodies (László et al. Microchem J 85(1):65–71, 2007). The paper deals with quality evaluation of waters with special focus on the water chemistry parameters as defined in the Water Framework Directive and pertaining legal regulations. The purpose of this paper is to devise a quantitative type of water quality assessment method which could provide rapid, accurate, and reliable information on the quality of the surface waters by using water chemistry parameters. Quality classes have been defined for every water chemistry parameter in light of the legal limit values of the water parameters. In addition to this, weight indices were calculated on the basis of the outcome of the paired comparison of water chemistry parameters and normalized matrix. This was followed by the parametric level analysis of the water chemistry parameters, and finally, the aquatic environment index (AEI) was calculated, which provided general information on the quality of water regarding the water chemistry parameters. The method was illustrated on Lake Balaton, Hungary in which case water samples taken from Balatonfüred City lake area were analyzed and evaluated with the method devised.

Next-generation bacteriophage therapeutic systems: CRISPR-based engineering, near-infrared bioimaging, and precision strategies for treating multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant bacterial infections

The rapid rise of multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant bacterial infections has renewed interest in bacteriophages as adaptable, targeted antimicrobials. Recent advances in phage engineering, including CRISPR-based approaches, now make it possible to refine host range, strengthen lytic performance, and deliver genetic payloads that target clinically important resistance determinants such as blaNDM, mecA, and mcr-1. In parallel, jumbo phages with large genomes often encode additional functions that support replication and biofilm disruption, offering practical advantages in densely structured infections where antibiotics perform poorly. A second limitation in phage translation has been measurement: in most settings, dosing and treatment duration remain guided by indirect endpoints rather than real-time information on distribution and activity. Near-infrared bioimaging addresses this gap by enabling noninvasive tracking of infection burden and phage kinetics in vivo through bacteriophytochrome-derived reporters, including iRFPs, miRFPs, and PAiRFPs. In this review, we bring these developments together and discuss how CRISPR-enabled phage engineering, jumbo-phage biology, and near-infrared readouts can be integrated into a precision framework that is measurable, adaptable, and clinically interpretable. We examine evidence across major drug-resistant pathogens, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, vancomycin-resistant enterococci, Burkholderia cepacia, and Mycobacterium abscessus. We also summarize practical constraints that remain central to clinical translation, manufacturing quality, host immune neutralization, and regulatory variability, and outline a realistic development pathway in which engineered phages and companion diagnostics progress from animal models to carefully defined clinical indications. Together, these advances support a shift from empirical phage use toward a more standardized, data-driven approach to treating drug-resistant infections.

Effect of Waist Strap Reinforcement in Backpacks on Children Gait Parameters During Walking and Running: A Randomized Cross-Over Prospective Study

As academic demands increase, school-aged children and adolescents often carry heavy backpacks, impacting their posture and musculoskeletal health. This study examines how backpack carriage affects children's gait, focusing on the influence of waist strap design. In this study, twelve children underwent biomechanical tests while walking and running with and without backpacks, with weights adjusted based on daily habits. It can be found that waist strap-equipped backpacks significantly increased load response (F = 58.031, P < .001) and pre-swing phases (F = 58.031, P < .001) during both activities. In running, these backpacks also prolonged load response (F = 3.10, P = 0.004) and pre-swing phases (F = 3.10, P = 0.004). The study concludes that waist strap-equipped backpacks alter gait dynamics in children, affecting phases and contact times without impacting symmetry. This underscores the importance of waist straps in enhancing stability and reducing fatigue during backpack carriage.

Determination of Johnson–Cook parameters and evaluation of Charpy impact test performance for 1.2709 steel produced via L-PBF

Laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) enables the creation of advanced metal parts that are difficult to manufacture conventionally. In this study, the model parameters of the Johnson–Cook (JC) constitutive relation and the damage parameters of the JC failure model for 1.2709 steel produced via L-PBF were determined. Constitutive parameters were identified from quasi-static uniaxial tensile tests conducted on smooth specimens. In contrast, stress triaxiality-dependent damage parameters were determined using tensile tests on notched round bar specimens in combination with FEM simulations. The load–displacement curves showed good agreement with the experimentally obtained data. The strain–rate–dependent failure model parameter was determined by correlating Charpy impact test results with numerical simulations. Reasonable agreement between the simulation and experimental results was achieved. The results demonstrate that the proposed experimental–numerical framework provides a reliable basis for modelling both the quasi-static and impact fracture behaviour of L-PBF-fabricated 1.2709 steel.
