Health professionals’ knowledge of probiotics: An international survey

The objective of this study was to survey health professionals to investigate their knowledge of probiotics. An online survey was conducted to gather data on the knowledge of health professionals. The online survey was distributed via email and social media platforms using snowball sampling. A total of 1066 health professionals (859; 80.6% female) from 30 countries responded to the survey. Most of the respondents evaluated their knowledge of probiotics as medium (36.4%) or good (36.2%). Only 8.9% of the respondents rated it as excellent. No statistical difference in knowledge was found between male and female health professionals. Over 80% of pharmacists, allied health professionals, medical doctors and dentists, and other health professionals knew the correct definition of probiotics as “live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host”, whereas three quarters of registered nurses and midwives and less than two thirds of psychologists identified the correct definition. Statistically, more female than male health professionals knew the correct definition of probiotics. The most frequently recognized species of bacteria containing probiotic strains were Lactobacillus acidophilus (92%), Bifidobacterium bifidum (82%), and Lactobacillus rhamnosus (62%). The opinions on when it is best to take probiotics were different (χ2 = 28.375; p < 0.001), with 90.2% of respondents identifying that probiotics have beneficial effects if taken during antibiotic therapy, 83.5% for diarrhea, 70.6% for constipation, 63.3% before traveling abroad, and 60.4% for treating allergies. Almost 79% of health professionals involved in this study have advised their patients to use probiotics and 57.5% of the respondents wanted to learn more about probiotics. All things considered, health professionals have a medium level of knowledge of probiotics, which could be improved by the implementation of targeted learning programs. As probiotics have many beneficial effects in a wide range of health areas, health professionals need to adopt the use of probiotics in clinical practice.

At the beginning of the computing era it was a great challenge to write a running program in order to solve different mathematical, statistical tasks, and to get the appropriate results by using a computer. At the university where I had began my studies we started to get acquainted with computers using a Russian made machine, named URAL 2. Looking back to the roots and thinking of the Hungarian born pioneer of computer science: the polymath John von Neumann, I had intended to deal with the history of computing at the very beginning of the eighties. Although there is a wide range of computing history literature worldwide (most of them in English), there are not any publications dealing with the Hungarian results. As I was one of the first graduates on computing taught by the Pioneers, I am forced to perform research on all materials dealing with the Hungarian achievements in computing, to protect the values of the past as long as it is not too late and also to make the results known!. © 2006 International Federation for Information Processing.

Exploring economic development and mineral rents nexus across BRICS nations: Fresh insights from multiple threshold panel analysis

The nexus between economic development and mineral rent across Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) is empirically tested by using multiple threshold panel analysis. This paper focuses on the association and correlation among Mineral Rents (% of GDP) and Gross Domestic Product per capita along with Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), Trade, and Renewable Energy Consumption per Capita, by using the data sets for the period 1994–2021. Dynamic Liner Model and Double Threshold models are used for empirical testing of the above variables. The Dynamic Liner Model identified the positive influence of trade and FDI on mineral rent; and the Double Threshold models identified the negative influence of GDP, trade, and FDI on mineral rent. The findings contribute to the literature about mineral rent and economic growth. Moreover, the findings of this paper help in planning policies and interventions for inclusive and sustainable economic development, GDP enhancement, promotion of trade, and FDI in Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) by considering mineral rent management. This paper also recommends considering the mineral rent taxation, mineral royalty, mine-community conflicts, corruption, institutional development, politics, and environmental issues before policy implementation and reforms related to economic development, GDP enhancement, promotion of trade, and FDI in BRICS.

Influence of green human resource management on employees’ behavior through mediation of environmental knowledge of managers

Lately, there has been a rising awareness of the significance of becoming green and applying different environmental management strategies within the corporate community. This paper endeavours to explore the adoption of Green HRM practices by managers in Patan Industrial Estate. This study addresses the importance of knowledge development in relation to HRM practices and employee behavior. The goal is to see how Green HRM influences EGB in Patan Industrial Estate through mediation of managers' environmental knowledge. Exploratory research design was chosen as the primary study paradigm to determine the truth. The data was evaluated quantitatively by using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The associations between the 113 replies were analyzed using SEM. According to the findings of the study, environmental knowledge does not operate as a facilitator between Green HRM and EGB. This result is also theoretically significant in terms of the AMO theory. However, Green HRM is an emerging concept that deserves more attention. Employees and organizations must make even more changes to ensure that greening processes are implemented in all of their activities. General recommendations for successful implementation of Green HRM practices include revising the vision, mission and organization policies of an organization, ensuring its ISO certification, advancement of technologies, and enhancing GHRM practices by providing training and empowering employees, as well as participating in proactive government initiatives.

A Test Model for Hardware and Software Systems

The paper is concerned with the general aspects of testing complex hardware and software systems. First a mapping scheme as a test model is presented for an arbitrary given system. This scheme serves for describing the one-to-one correspondence between the input and output domains of the system, where the test inputs and fault classes are also involved. The presented test model incorporates both the verification and the validation schemes for hardware and software. The significance of the model is that it alleviates the clear differentiation between verification and validation tests, which is important and useful in the process of test design and evaluation. On the other hand, this model provides a clear overview on the various purpose test sets, which helps in organizing and applying these sets. The second part of the paper examines the case when the hardware and software are designed by using formal specification. Here the consequences and problems of formal methods, and their impacts on verification and validation are discussed.

On the existence and uniqueness of fixed points of fuzzy set valued sigmoid fuzzy cognitive maps

Fuzzy cognitive maps are decision support tools, where the complex structure is modelled by a weighted, directed graph. The nodes represent specific characteristics of the modelled system, weighted and directed edges correspond to the direction and the strength of the relationship between the factors. The system state is identified by the values of the nodes which are computed by iteration. This process may lead to a fixed point, a limit cycle or produces chaotic behaviour. The type of behaviour depends on the weights, on the topology of the graph and on the function applied for the iteration. From the practical viewpoint, it is critical to know whether the iteration converges to a fixed point or not. In this article, we discuss this problem for the case when the weights or the values of the nodes are fuzzy numbers. This scenario may occur when linguistic variables, modelled by fuzzy numbers, describe the connections.

An economic prediction of refinement coefficients in wavelet-based adaptive methods for electron structure calculations

The wave function of a many electron system contains inhomogeneously distributed spatial details, which allows to reduce the number of fine detail wavelets in multiresolution analysis approximations. Finding a method for decimating the unnecessary basis functions plays an essential role in avoiding an exponential increase of computational demand in wavelet-based calculations. We describe an effective prediction algorithm for the next resolution level wavelet coefficients, based on the approximate wave function expanded up to a given level. The prediction results in a reasonable approximation of the wave function and allows to sort out the unnecessary wavelets with a great reliability. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The virtualized systems are one of the key elements of the next generation IT infrastructures. Modeling it will prevent mistakes, and oversized management. Opennebula is one of the most current open source cloud management solutions. Together with Haizea, they are a powerful tool to model and manage a virtualized infrastructure trough the API of Openebula. Haizea has multiple scheduler algorithms that are more effective than that of Opennebula. We performed several experiments to compare simulation and measurement capabilities of Haizea and we highlighted some difference between them which can be reduced if required.

Mobility is an important part of our daily life, hence the good health of our lower extremities is essential. Gait analysis using kinetic data along with medical Decision Support System or Computer Aided Diagnosis provide to physicians support in gait disorder detection, the risk of foot ulcerations especially in diabetic patients, leg discrepancy, footprint pathologies, and many other applications in biomedical diagnosis. To increase confidence in the system, it is necessary to use a technique which uses a comprehensive reasoning and provide explanations to discover new relationships and combination of features. The present research is an attempt to assess the viability of investigating human footprint alterations using Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCM) combined with a Genetic Algorithm (GA), and it is part for preparation of investigating more efficient algorithms in the future. In the proposed method, GA is used to learn the weight matrix of an FCM model applied to identify alterations in the human footprint. Using historical plantar pressure data obtained by electronic platforms, combined with FCM and optimization algorithm, a promising outcome is presented in the field of Computer-Aided Diagnosis.
