The approximation methods of mathematics are widely used in theory and practice for several problems. In the framework of the paper a novel tensor-product based approach for representation of neural networks (NNs) is proposed. The NNs in this case stand for local models based on which a more complex parameter varying model can numerically be reconstructed and reduced using the higher order singular value decomposition (HOSVD). The HOSVD as well as the tensor-product based representation of NNs will be discussed in detail. © 2011 IEEE.

A partial ordering approach for functional diversity

Functional diversity is generally regarded as the constituent of biological diversity that considers how the species functional traits affect ecosystem processes. Due to its ecological relevance, a number of indices of functional diversity have been proposed to date based on distinct objectives and motivations. Such proliferation of indices can be at least partially overcome by a more fundamental mathematical approach. In this paper we propose an intrinsic ordering approach for abundance-weighted measures of functional diversity that is similar to the Lorenz curves used by ecologists for ordering evenness measures. We then discuss the relevance of a number of functional diversity indices that have a behavior compatible with the proposed partial ordering. © 2011 Elsevier Inc.

Institutional quality and the environment–finance nexus: evidence from global economies

This study examines the intricate relationship between financial development, institutional quality and environmental efficiency. While financial development has the potential to support environmental sustainability, concerns remain regarding its unintended negative effects through unchecked economic expansion. The objective of this research is to investigate how financial development affects environmental efficiency and to assess the moderating role of institutional quality, particularly when financial development proxies reflect financial market accessibility and efficiency. Using a directional distance function within a stochastic frontier framework and incorporating multiple financial development indicators alongside measures of institutional quality, we find that financial development significantly reduces environmental inefficiency, with institutional quality strengthening this effect. These results highlight the importance of policy approaches that simultaneously enhance financial development and institutional quality. Furthermore, our findings support targeted initiatives such as promoting green finance, building institutional capacity and investing in research and data infrastructure to inform evidence-based policymaking for sustainable development.

Price convergence in the EU in general and in the Central, Eastern and Southern European EU member states in particular

The subject of the paper is the analysis of price convergence in the European Union in general and in the Central and Eastern European member states in particular. The first part of the paper is an overview of the relevant literature on price convergence serving as the theoretical foundation of the subsequent empirical analyses on comparative price levels. The second part discusses sigma convergence in the EU-27 including the old (EU-15) and the new (EU-12) member states, as well as within the Economic and Monetary Union. Conditional (weak) beta convergence in the EU-12 is also analyzed. The first conclusion of the paper is that a rather strong relationship exists between sigma convergence and the process of economic integration, more precisely between sigma convergence and the establishment of the individual stages of regional economic associations. The second conclusion is that price convergence is not a secular process; it may be impeded or accelerated by a great number of micro and macroeconomic factors.

The state of bipolarity plays a major role in any circumstance due to the involvement of fors and againsts for each condition. This research enhances some rudimentary operations, propositions, and valuable theorems based on the recently developed aspect called the bipolar linear diophantine fuzzy hypersoft set. The choice of the individual without restriction enhances the technique. In addition, all its crumbles are curtailed with more flexibility. Railways are easily accessible for all classes of people and require a guarded journey. Currently, rail accidents are a major controversy all over the world as they kill many and injure riskily. For this reason, an algorithm is expanded to elect an effective crash-evasive rail carriage equipped with ultrasonic sensors to detect the range of the hindrance and brake controls. The study aims to gain additional insight and solve the critical issue of railway safety, particularly regarding recent incidents that have placed passengers at risk worldwide. The initiative aims to develop a highly effective crash-evasive rail carriage system by extending the capabilities of existing algorithms. This technology aims to minimize the incidence of rail accidents by selecting an ideal system based on the sensing range of sensor and brake control mechanisms. The study further distinguishes its innovations to set theoretic operations within the framework plays a vital role in strengthening procedures for making choices and guaranteeing the accuracy of the proposed solution. The recommended strategy not only confronts current safety concerns but also sets the foundation for future technological evolution in the railway sector.

The other side of war or migration and labor market imbalances: Evidence from Eastern Europe for the period 2014–2025

This study investigates whether war-induced forced migration has led to persistent imbalances in Eastern European labor markets, with a specific focus on matching efficiency. The analysis utilizes a quasi-experimental design combining Eurostat and UNHCR quarterly panel data for the EU-27 from 2014 to 2025. The methodology employs a multi-period difference-in-differences approach and Beveridge curve regressions to isolate the specific impact of the Temporary Protection Directive flows. The findings indicate an upward and outward shift in the Beveridge curve following the 2022 shock, characterized by a simultaneous increase in vacancies and unemployment. The results demonstrate that high institutional integration capacity dampens these shock effects, while persistence primarily observed in service-intensive sectors. The study suggests that reducing matching costs through targeted language equivalence accelerators and fair placement algorithms is essential for market stabilization.

Evaluation of Novel Picolinamide Fungicides (QiI) for Controlling Cercospora beticola Sacc. in Sugar Beet

Studies were initiated to find new effective fungicides to use under field conditions to discover novel approaches for optimizing disease management in sugar beet crops. Cercospora leaf spot (CLS), a prevalent foliar disease in sugar beet crops worldwide, is caused by the fungal pathogen Cercospora beticola Sacc. This disease has become the most prevalent pathogen in sugar beet crops across nearly all European growing regions, including Hungary. The epidemic spread of this disease can cause up to 50% yield loss. The use of fungicides has been a cornerstone in managing CLS of sugar beet due to the limited efficacy of non-chemical alternatives. However, the emergence of fungicide-resistant strains of Cercospora beticola Sacc. in recent decades has compromised the effectiveness of certain fungicides, particularly those belonging to the QoI (FRAC Group 11) and DMI (FRAC Group 3) classes. Hungary is among the many countries where resistance to these fungicides has developed due to their frequent application. Picolinamides represent a novel class of fungal respiration inhibitors targeting Complex III within the Quinoine-Inside Inhibitor (QiI) group. Two innovative fungicides from this class, fenpicoxamid and florylpicoxamid (both classified under FRAC Group 21), were evaluated for their efficacy in managing CLS of sugar beet in Hungary during the 2020 and 2021 growing seasons. Both fungicides were applied as formulated products at various application rates and demonstrated superior efficacy in controlling CLS compared to untreated control plots and the reference fungicides difenoconazole and epoxiconazole. The results consistently demonstrated that all tested application rates of fenpicoxamid and florylpicoxamid effectively controlled CLS in sugar beet, exhibiting a clear dose–response relationship. Disease severity, as measured by the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC), was significantly correlated with yield reduction but showed no significant association with root sugar content. Moreover, data from both study years indicated that picolinamide fungicides applied at a rate of 75 g ai/ha significantly outperformed difenoconazole (100 g ai/ha) in controlling the CLS of sugar beet. Additionally, higher application rates of picolinamides at 100–150 g ai/ha outperformed epoxiconazole at 125 g ai/ha in disease suppression. Fenpicoxamid is currently registered for use in cereals within Europe, and outside of Europe in Banana against Black Sigatoka (eff. Mycosphaerella fijiensis). Florylpicoxamid, while not yet registered in Europe, is undergoing approval processes in various countries worldwide for a range of crops and is continually being evaluated for potential market introduction. Additional details regarding the efficacy of florylpicoxamid against CLS in sugar beet were presented at ‘The 10th International Conference on Agricultural and Biological Sciences (ABS 2024, Győr-Hungary)’ in 2024.

The role of driver's eye height in the design of crest curves of roads

The driver's eye height from the ground, as what drivers can see on the road, is essential for their safety and for avoiding road hazards. Using the statistical analysis of vehicles sample, the statistical parameters of the measured set of values were determined. A one-sample t-test was done to check whether the measured sample differs from the driver's eye height value specified in the Hungarian design guidelines. A new range of driver's eye height has been found, which is considered an update to the current value and might be applied in the upcoming road design. Parallel with the eye-height analysis, sight distances at vertical crest curves were modeled by AutoCAD Civil 3D. The minimum radiuses of the crest curves were defined for human eye height and for sensors of autonomous vehicles.
